Paul Lambert continued his early summer spending last week with the capture of Millwall forward Steve Morison in a three year undisclosed deal, adding further to his options up front. With James Vaughan arriving at Carrow Road in late May, the Norwich boss has wasted little time in boosting his squad and is clearly determined to acquire players as quickly as possible.

Morison caught the eye with 15 goals in last season’s Championship and Lambert showed plenty determination in securing his signature; Norwich had two bids turned down for Morison, but with the player subsequently handing in a written transfer request, the moved reached a speedy conclusion. Lambert has been a long-term admirer of the player and was clearly delighted to snap him up…

“We’ve seen him for a few years and I think he was brilliant at Millwall. I thought he was a handful when we played against him so he will come and add to what we have already got and the striking department at this minute in time is really, really strong. But I think we are going to need everybody…As I said last season and the year before that, for us to do fine in it we need everybody. He will add to it, he is only 27, 28 shortly. I have no worries about him playing in front of a crowd or anything like that because he has already done it.”

The Statistics

Morison is another Norwich forward who has no top level experience; he’d spent five years playing in the Conference -scoring a combined 96 goals in 172 games for Bishop’s Stortford and Stevenage Borough- before Millwall captured him up for a mere £130K a couple of seasons back.

Despite the step up in class, he maintained his level of consistency, grabbing 35 goals in 83 games for Watford, with last season’s tally of 15 (allied to 8 assists) the first time he’s failed to score under 20 for five seasons. It remains to be seen whether Morison’s abilities will flourish in the Premier League but Lambert certainly isn’t concerned over the player’s lack of top-flight action, explaining…

“You want people here who want to achieve something. Players who are hungry don’t need to be 21 or 22. You can get a lad at 31 who is hungry. If I think it’s right then I’ll look at them – if you get experienced lads who want to keep doing well. I think they know the magnitude of it, they know what I expect and I have no worries about any of them. It ain’t going to get any bigger than this.”

The Prospects

Morison’s arrival gives Lambert plenty to choose from up front; the Canaries now have five forwards fighting to fill two places. This will resultantly place him low down on Fantasy radars; Grant Holt, the club’s top scorer for the past couple of seasons, will surely start the season which will leave the 6ft 4ins Morison to battle it out with Vaughan, Simeon Jackson and Chris Martin for the other remaining spot. Even Morison acknowledges the battle he has on his hands…

“First and foremost, I need to work my way into the team, which is going to be a hard task in itself because they’ve got players that have earned the right to play for the club already. I want to be a part of that and it is up to me to work as hard as I can and force my way into the team.”

Morison should come in at 4.5, a cheap third striker option to consider, but unless Lambert settles for a definite pair up front during pre-season, picking any Norwich striker other than Holt at the outset seems nothing more than a mere lottery, particularly as Holt’s penalty kick duties will weigh matters firmly in his favour.

I think Walker is the best value defender for England. He's so attacking and only 6.6m

My captain today is Bilie Nielsen of Denmark, and i think i'm going to play my wildcard for matchday 3.

Totally agree, Demi, on Walker. He's the best way in to the ENG defence with assist potential. That .1 increase was annoying though 😡

            Aye it was 🙁

Yep, i think Denmark should score a couple against one of the weakest defences in the tournament, and Billy should be involved

The boundwagon this week has been Herrera, as he's such a route into the Imperious Spanish midfield, and looking on the evidence of the last match against England, he could've scored two.

However if i were to go against the grain, and select one of Thiago or Mata, who would you recommend? 🙂

Neither appeal to me. Mata needs to justify his 10 mill pricetag and Thiago, is unknown to me.

Alcantra seems to be on set plays-I think. What impressed me about Herrera was the no of shots he was getting in. Would be good to see a chalkboard.

It's useful to go back through the commentary section to see who did what.

Right, time for some U21 chat.

Had to say goodbye to K'planka; I made up this loss of one of the more sillier names by getting in Nepogod :)...ov.

Getting rid of all the Icies doesn't seem right, so I kept hold of Glyfi Sigmundson.

Welcome back too, to Danish Billy. If he can keep his bacon, he'll earn the cap'n'cy this round.

My feeling is that the best source of points remains in group A, certainly attack points. Can see DEN v BEL with a few goals in it.

Nope, taking him out actually! Well, that's the plan anyways. Belarus are a right hard-working defensive team so I expect that to be a low scoring game. May bring him in next week though, as Iceland tend to attack quite a bit and hence concede a few*. Hoping for a goal fest between Iceland and Switzerland myself.

            You Wildcarding now?

DEN had a no of shots on goal in the first game and Billy has been on good form prior to the tournament. Home advantage must count for something 🙂

This game is quite crucial for DEN though so expecting a big performance from them.

Just read the classic AP reply to my comment yesterday about the whole Sneijder to Man Utd thing having no real basis and then Tommy K jumping in as well.

I simply made a point that I don't think theirs any really truth in it and it's just the media linking Man Utd with the sort of player they need. Then he started slagging off Henderson & Adam like I'm gonna get really defensive about them, I think both are over priced and over rated, I'm not gonna just blindly back them for no reason just coz their at the team I support, it was typical how it was completely irrelevant to what I said tho.

Just needed to get that off my chest 🙂

    Morning jafalad.

I've kept my 2 Icelanders. Both are starters and even 2 points is better than nothing.

Only did 2 freebies for this gameday; Henderson for Capel and Walker for Hosek. Think Walker is best value England player as I can see a cleanie and possibly attacking points too.

Banking on England realizing this is the game they must win in their group. Like Erikson too but I have Bille already so I'll just go with him. Captaining Bille tonight too.

Plan to use my wildcard for gameday 3 as well.

Big pressure on the Icies to win and I think they will fall short going on the first game. I've had to ditch them as I'm on w/c and have to think long term as well as short term.

Yeah I'm just obsessed with him on #FM11 so it's hard not to include him, I'd say Martinez would probably be the better choice....Spain's midfield weren't very impressive though...

true. got a slight feeling herrera is a one off but decent access to their midfield

aye aye true also, it was a lucky goal to be honest, granted his price seems to be a bit of a steal, I just didn't like the way he played so I'm just going for a personal favourite and crossing my fingers!

After starting work for the first time yesterday, it's time to sample what "having a break" is like.

    WC Team : Rate it

    Gutor
    Polyakov, Zanka, Affolter
Dragun, Jensen, Eirksen (c), Herrara, Shaqiri
    Sturridge, Ben Khalifa

    Subs: Fielding, Montoya, Yarmolenko, Partsvaniya

Playing the people who are playing today first, then considering whether to bring in the players on the bench

Fine, only having one denmark and switzerland players is a bit worrying

The forward line looks strong and like mikess mentions, thiago could be downgraded to herrara

Other than that, better than mine

          Only messing bro!

I'd put 3 of your bench on the field to be honest, think Fielding, Montoya and Yarmolenko could have a better game than others in your starting XI

£5 mil is to be added to all teams values for the semis, and you have to work like stink to increase value before then. Thats all 🙂

I'd say they're more stabilisers as we're in the U21s

More like stable-isers with some of the donkeys being recommended.

If I had the extra .5, I would have Mata over any of the spanish midfield, but not for Dockal.
