Norwich have secured two successive promotions under the guidance of Paul Lambert, a feat achieved with a largely similar squad. Questions will always be asked over their ability to step up and compete at a higher level, but as the majority of the Canaries proved their capabilities last season under Lambert’s expert leadership, there will be a degree of optimism amongst the Norwich faithful.

Wes Hoolahan is a player who will be expected to perform a leading role in the transition; a key figure who will be at the forefront of most attacking moves, contributing a decent goal and assist tally along the way. The Republic of Ireland international has been a revelation over the last two years and in January signed-up on a long-term contract – proving that he is firmly in Lambert’s plans.

Searching the pool of newly-promoted midfield talent, many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers will be looking for the next Charlie Adam – a cheap, Bonus Point magnet that chips in with goals and assists. Although not the first name on the watchlist, Hoolahan is certainly worthy of consideration.

The Statistics

The 29-year-old midfielder has a plenty of experience in the lower leagues, with Blackpool and Norwich, as well as time in his native Ireland, at Shelbourne, and a spell in Scotland with Livingston – he has yet to take the step up to the Premier League. In his earlier years he was often employed on the flanks, but it was the role just behind the striker, instigated by Lambert, where he has truly flourished and played a pivotal role in the fortunes of the club.

Functioning at the point of a midfield diamond, Lambart has allowed Hoolahan to bring his creativity, vision and guile to bear on opponents with superb results. Last season Hoolahan made 36 starts and 5 appearances from the bench which led to 10 goals and 9 assists – this form carried him to a place in the Championship Team of the Season.

During the 2009/10 League One campaign, Hoolahan’s statistics were similarly impressive; In 36 starts and one substitute appearance he fetched 11 goals and provided 13 assists – selectoin in the PFA League One Team of the Season also came his way.

The Prospects

Whist many a-Fantasy Manager will swoon over the newly-promoted talents of Adel Taarabt and Scott Sinclair, Hoolahan could slip under the radar and theoretically offer similar potential. He cannot boast the same goalscoring record which the aforementioned pair, but for those concerned over how both Taarabt and Sinclair will adjust to the top-flight, Hoolahan could present a viable option.

Hoolahan’s lack of Premier League experience and the fact he lines up for a team who will be expected to struggle, should see him placed firmly in the budget price bracket. In the FPL we shouldn’t expect a valuation any higher than 5.0 – indeed 4.5 seems more likely. This valuation, coupled with Sinclair and Taarabt’s predicted popularity, means that Hoolahan could be an excellent budget “differential†in midfield during prosperous periods for Norwich.

Unless there are dramatic changes on the horizon, you would expect Hoolahan to continue to take the majority of the club’s set-pieces. In addition to his potential to provide assists and score direct free-kicks, Hoolahan is also second in line to take spot kicks. After missing a couple of penalties early on, Grant Holt muscled past him in the queue. But depending on Holt’s form and starting place, which is under pressure from new recruits Steve Morison and James Vaughn as well as Simeon Jackson, Hoolahan could take the reins once again.

Despite the fact that Hoolahan has been crucial to the success at Carrow Road in recent years, the Premier League is a ruthless environment and his place in the side is by no means nailed-on. It’s worth keeping an eye on who the club bring in over the next few months. Recent reports have linked the Canaries to Leeds’ midfield pair Robert Snodgrass and Bradley Johnson – both of whom could be employed in Hoolahan’s central attacking role.

Initially, at least, you would expect Hoolahan to continue to be one of the first names on the team sheet and if Norwich’s early season fixtures are favourable, he could prove to be an astute acquisition at a bargain price.

Along with most of others in English shirt, the performance was not great, however is Welbeck a real centre forward?

When has he played as sole striker at club level - in fact at sunderland he has not been a forward, playing from wide left.

I did think Smalling, Walker , lansbury and sinclair played well along with Fielding in goal.

Watching the vidiprinter on UEFA, the whole game seemed absolutely pi55 poor.

I was going to play my WC after this match, but now I’m seriously of thinking of holding off until after the next matchday.

I know you get 6 transfers next round but that means you have to have 9 players in your team who are likely to play. Apart from Switzerland and probably Spain I really don’t have any idea who is going to be in the last 4.

That together with the fact you can only have a maximum of 3 players from any one team at the mo and that you get an extra 5m next round which will help to combat price rises, is seriously looking more logical.

    Any opinions guys?

Ukraine yes, but I think Iceland can still scrape through.

If they manage a win against the Danes*, and the Swiss also win, then goal difference will come into play as Denmark, Belarus and Iceland will all be on 3 points and have beaten each other.

*Iceland would actually have to score for this to happen, so maybe I'm being too optimistic on their behalf.

QPR barely spent any money in the Championship even though they had all of that muscle behind them, they won "despite" that fact; and largely thanks to, as much as I hate to say it, astute management from Warnock.

They got promoted with the likes of Clint Hill, Shaun Derry, Paddy Kenny ...and Rob Hulse! Experienced players but not the best team to have graced the Championship in a million Sundays.

They're a measured investment, they're not going to go all Abramovich/Mansour on them any time soon.

Most definitely. The 40+% rise in ticket prices and side-street chatter of Ecclestone wanting to sell (for over 5 times purchase price, of course) also indicative.

I can't see them going all splash Harry, they've got the funds to do it come January if all goes tits up... maybe? But they will, as you say, work at it.

I seems all too sensible for football in the modern age. Doesn't sit right.
I agree though. See how it goes, then consider splashing if in danger* come January

The real danger is that they'll be the new Hull/Burnley/Blackpool and be flying so high early season that they'll be fooled into thinking it can't go wrong. I can't see it with this lot, but recent seasons suggest there will be one of those (Swansea?).

English player true value in ££'s x 10 = Premiership transfer fee in ££'s.

Shaqiri seems to be a bandwagon worth jumping on but you might have missed the boat. Maybe he's not got a life-raft but the Swiss look like going through to the next round so I'd jump aboard.

I've decided to go with 4 dirt cheap subs that won't play in a vain effort to have 11 half decent players on the pitch (who probably won't play... ahem).

This season's Carling Cup will feature a preliminary round for the first time since 2002/03 following Birmingham City's relegation to the npower Championship.

With the holders being seeded through to Round 3, courtesy of their participation in the Europa League, the competition format will require one less club in the first round draw.

What transfers have ppl made in the U21s? Jorgensen and Emegera for me.

I see SWZ, DEN, ENG, and SPN making the last 4 so trying to position myself with players from these teams.

Currently have 9/12 at present. Emegara 200+ transfers in already 😯

I don't see England making it Jafalad, they have to beat the Czechs. From what I've read and heard their current form won't do it. Of course if he ever decides to play some of the bench huggers we might have a chance.

Good to see you doing well in the league.

Yeah it's a tough call between Czh and Eng. I've got Dokal but that's it. I'm hoping ENG do what they always do and leave it to the last game to show some form.

Sinclair-reckon he'll see more game time? I've kept hold of Sturridge.

I suppose the positves are they are defending well and are unbeaten. Need to work out where the goals are coming from. Hard to see Welbeck or Sturridge been ditched.

Thought A'ton might start after the season he's had.

    Bit of a Sweepstake chaps:-

How many transfers in will Perepechko have to have before his price goes up?

Please consider that those with similar TFs and ownership have increased by .2 or .3

Lastly, WHY THE FECK HASN'T HE GONE UP YET?
