With the Toon Army still reeling from the loss of another key figure in light of Kevin Nolan’s departure for West Ham, Alan Pardew has moved quickly to pacify the doubters. Saturday saw Newcastle announce their third signing in the past few days, with the free-transfer capture of Sylvain Marveaux from Rennes on a five-year deal beginning on July 1.

Hot on the heels of Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye, Marveaux’s arrival shows Pardew means business this transfer window and, with the futures of Joey Barton and Jose Enrique uncertain, the squad is rapidly moulding into more of the manager’s own making, following his mid-season arrival on Tyneside last term. Pardew spoke after the deal was announced:

“It’s a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs. He may not be well known to many of our fans but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time. It’s been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front.”

The Statistics

The 25-year-old has spent his entire professional career at Rennes. Making his debut in the 2006/07 season, Marveaux struggled to nail down a first-team place and initially flitted in and out the side without much impact. The 2009/10 season, however, saw Marveaux given regular starts under new boss FrΓ©dΓ©ric Antonetti and with 35 games under his belt, showed his capabilities, bagging 10 goals and 5 assists.

That season brought the left winger to the attention of many clubs and with his contract running out this summer, plenty of interest was shown. Liverpool were believed to head the queue of Marveaux’s many suitors but despite reports of a failed medical at Anfield last week, the player put it down to nothing more than β€œa contractual disagreement”.

Nevertheless, his career has been somewhat plagued by injury; a hamstring problem meant he made 5 appearances in 2008/09 and a groin injury in October last year saw him play just 10 games. With that in mind, will he live up to the more rigorous demands of the Premier League?

In total, he played 102 games for Rennes over five seasons, scoring 16 and assisting 16 goals. He’s also represented France at Under 21 level, with 4 goals in 11 appearances.

The Prospects

Newcastle are very much a club in transition; their top scorers last season were Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan and with both now gone, it’ll be down to the new boys to gel if the club are to better last season’s twelfth-placed finish. If Barton goes this summer they’ll also lose their chief creator, though Hatim Ben Arfa will return from his broken leg to top up the flair levels.

Pardew predominantly played 4-4-2 last season but with more of his own purchases at his disposal, will Newcastle see a change in formation? Marveaux is best utilised on the left, either as a conventional winger or attacking midfielder, which suggest he will be vying with Jonas Gutierrez for a starting berth, though there have been suggestions the Argentine may also be ready to leave this summer. Gutierrez made 34 starts last term and, if he stays, may alternate with Marveaux on the flank, limiting the new boy’s game time.

Marveaux should come in around the 5.5 to 6.0 mark and whilst the likes of Barton and Nolan showed the Fantasy potential of Newcastle’s midfield with 131 and 140 points respectively last season, there’s too much uncertainty surrounding his likely appearances right now to realistically rate his chances. The next two months should shed some light on the matter, as Pardew continues his summer of squad restructuring ahead of the club’s opening game of the season at home to Arsenal.

Dockal. My hunch is that SWZ came out of a weak group and you'll need the CZH playmaker fro the final.

Incidentally, I played the Maccy Ds World Cup game and in all 7 rounds, my gks kept a cs.

So far, in this game I am 3/3 for gk cs. Just swapped Sommer out for De Gea. I believe this must be some sort of ff record πŸ™‚

    Morning FPL fans!

In case you missed it, I've done a provisional keeper combo analysis. It's based on avoiding situations where either keeper is up against MUN, CHE, MCY, ARS, LIV, TOT home or away and EVE or AVL away.

Look at it as suggests for compatible 2nd choice keeper alternatives for keepers from each team.

    ie:
    Keeper 1:Keeper 2/Alternative Keeper 2

    AVL:WBA
    BLA:STK
    BOL:CHE
    EVE:FUL/WIG
    FUL:EVE/QPR/ARS
    NEW:ARS/BOL
    NOR:WOL/CHE
    QPR:FUL/BOL
    STK:BLA/LIV/ARS
    SUN:TOT/CHE
    SWA:MCY/TOT/MUN/ARS
    TOT:SUN/SWA/NEW/QPR/MCY
    WBA:AVL
    WIG:WBA
    WOL:AVL/TOT/SUN

Or if you’re going for a big budget keeper:
    ARS:NEW/FUL/SWA
    CHE:BOL/MCY
    LIV:STK
    MCY:SWA/TOT
    MUN:SWA/WIG

i think is a good coach... but, in porto is easy to be good... their president has every man envolved in sports (here in portugal) eating in his hand... and he already had a great team when he arrived ( built by jesualdo ferreira).
however, is not easy to win the europa league, and i'll give him credit for that...
but he won (virtually) portugal's 1st league in january because of scandalous refereeing in the first 8 gameweeks in his direct rivals (benfica and braga).

I would have preferred a Season with Hiddink and then Villas-Boas but if it's to be now then so be it. I reckon he'll bring a youthful perspective that will bring out the best in us. I believe he's also an attack-minded coach and with his previous Chelsea connection in mind, we're up for a super fun season. I'm for it but thought it would be a season away though. Up Chelsea!

the only problem with villas boas is, he never lost this season.. so he is great when winning, but how will he react if some bad results (like what happened to ancelotti this year, when they lost and tied many games in a row) start comming? let's not forget preimier league is waaaaay more difficult than portuguese league, champions is waaaay more dififcult than europa league, and the fa cup, and carling cup...etc... and i don't think is the new special one...

There's no denying he's short on experience when dealing with those issues...but Chelsea haven't had luck with top notch coaches...Scolari, Ancelotti (to a degree)...so with experience aside, his appointment would be a Jose-type experiment again...and we all know what happened there. If Hiddink is also involved then tactics, solutions to bad periods and such could be worked on...least there will be a team for that...unlike last season where Carlo was kicked out to sea with no real assistance around.

I think that would be a great signing for us/Wolves. Much as I love Elokobi and can see that he's really improved I do think that's an area to strengthen. Ol' Jelle Van Damme didn't really work out for us.

From a fantasy perspective I suppose he'd probably come in at 5 like Craddock did after his first season scoring several goals. Too much to spend on a Wolves defender outside of a small window of decent fixtures I reckon.

4.5 and I'd forget last season and get burned again.

5 pints is pretty drunk for me O___O it would have to be a pretty special occasion for me to drink more than that.

And MMW, can't wait to see the new ticker. Are you gonna split it into attack/defence?

      POSSIBLE GOOD IDEA
To pass the time away maybe .
Pick 8 clubs from the 92 english league clubs .
      2 from each division
Based on last seasons finishing positions ie 20 for Man U down to 1 for newly promoted Swansea .... do this with the other 3 divisions 24 to 1 .
You as the manager would be given 96 points to spend on your 8 clubs .
Each point your club scores goes towards your team total .
If a there is a tie between managers team totals , the lowest points spent out of the 96 would be credited the higher position .

I'm up for it... even if we don't play the game I'd be happy to spend some time picking!

In the Championship are we giving Birmingham 24, Blackpool 23 and Wigan 22. And then Cardiff at 21 etc... Brighton 3, Southampton 2 and Peterborough 1?

I thought it would be fun & maybe something which could be done season after season .

As it may only be me playing this I reckon I've a good chance of winning... as an inital stab I'm going with...

        Man U - 20
        Liverpool - 15
Brighton (and Hove actually) - 3
        Southampton - 2
        Sheffield United - 23
        Chesterfield - 4
        Plymouth Argyle - 22
        Bradford City - 7

To be honest I spent more time getting the teams in the right order than choosing - my knowlege of the teams across the divisions is not good.

But Brighton & HA play excellent football and I'd expect them to put up a decent show in the Championship, same with Southampton... well, mid table anyway.

I reckon Chesterfield could be in for a decent year too, got their new stadium and seem to be moving in the right direction.

I think Plymouth might win League 2 but not too sure about anything really. Sheffield United might be due a Wednesday like season in league so that might be a dumb pick but but then surely they'll have a good year down a division... but did think the same for Wednesday this year πŸ™

I did think the same about Brighton .... I thought Man U would be a safe bet 80+ points for your effort .
Hopefully this will flourish & be implemented by someone .
To me its a different twist on the usual FF concepts .

I like it... but if you pick your teams and then just leave it for the whole season it's going to get dull. You need to spice it up with some transfer type stuff!!

Maybe at specific points in the season you get to change your teams... say every two months.

And if you started off with Swansea for one point but they're 12th in the league at change time you've 9 points to spend... doing it that way you can try and pick teams with decent fixtures to maximise your chances. Try and build your Swansea in to a Man U or a Chelsea by the end of the season πŸ™‚

But let's be fair... no one's going to manage that!

I do like your thinking there hadn`t thought of that , but as you also stated no one`s going to want manage all that data .Thats why I thought the no hands approach would be ok for the 1st season then possibly IF it snowballs then tweeks could be made for the following season .

Personally I'm shocked by the number of (pointless at this stage) RMTs with Gerrard in, I dont get it. As a Liverpool fan I obviously love him as a players etc but his days as a quality FPL are done IMO. He seems to be becoming a bit more injury prone again and maybe that will be ok now but his role has defiantly changed for us, when fit Meireles was playing more of his role negus the striker and Gerrard was playing deeper in the midfield with Lucas playing more of a deep lying playmaker of sorts. The only way I'll go for him is if he's about 9m or less.
