With the Toon Army still reeling from the loss of another key figure in light of Kevin Nolan’s departure for West Ham, Alan Pardew has moved quickly to pacify the doubters. Saturday saw Newcastle announce their third signing in the past few days, with the free-transfer capture of Sylvain Marveaux from Rennes on a five-year deal beginning on July 1.

Hot on the heels of Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye, Marveaux’s arrival shows Pardew means business this transfer window and, with the futures of Joey Barton and Jose Enrique uncertain, the squad is rapidly moulding into more of the manager’s own making, following his mid-season arrival on Tyneside last term. Pardew spoke after the deal was announced:

“It’s a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs. He may not be well known to many of our fans but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time. It’s been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front.”

The Statistics

The 25-year-old has spent his entire professional career at Rennes. Making his debut in the 2006/07 season, Marveaux struggled to nail down a first-team place and initially flitted in and out the side without much impact. The 2009/10 season, however, saw Marveaux given regular starts under new boss Frédéric Antonetti and with 35 games under his belt, showed his capabilities, bagging 10 goals and 5 assists.

That season brought the left winger to the attention of many clubs and with his contract running out this summer, plenty of interest was shown. Liverpool were believed to head the queue of Marveaux’s many suitors but despite reports of a failed medical at Anfield last week, the player put it down to nothing more than “a contractual disagreement”.

Nevertheless, his career has been somewhat plagued by injury; a hamstring problem meant he made 5 appearances in 2008/09 and a groin injury in October last year saw him play just 10 games. With that in mind, will he live up to the more rigorous demands of the Premier League?

In total, he played 102 games for Rennes over five seasons, scoring 16 and assisting 16 goals. He’s also represented France at Under 21 level, with 4 goals in 11 appearances.

The Prospects

Newcastle are very much a club in transition; their top scorers last season were Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan and with both now gone, it’ll be down to the new boys to gel if the club are to better last season’s twelfth-placed finish. If Barton goes this summer they’ll also lose their chief creator, though Hatim Ben Arfa will return from his broken leg to top up the flair levels.

Pardew predominantly played 4-4-2 last season but with more of his own purchases at his disposal, will Newcastle see a change in formation? Marveaux is best utilised on the left, either as a conventional winger or attacking midfielder, which suggest he will be vying with Jonas Gutierrez for a starting berth, though there have been suggestions the Argentine may also be ready to leave this summer. Gutierrez made 34 starts last term and, if he stays, may alternate with Marveaux on the flank, limiting the new boy’s game time.

Marveaux should come in around the 5.5 to 6.0 mark and whilst the likes of Barton and Nolan showed the Fantasy potential of Newcastle’s midfield with 131 and 140 points respectively last season, there’s too much uncertainty surrounding his likely appearances right now to realistically rate his chances. The next two months should shed some light on the matter, as Pardew continues his summer of squad restructuring ahead of the club’s opening game of the season at home to Arsenal.

MMW; got the ticker and it's very impressive. Looking at the values, they're exactly how I would imagine every team to be ranked, so I think your formula has worked great.

I'm thinking though, building on those rankings, why don't we have:

    Team A (H) Vs Team B (A)
Team A rank x Home goals = team A's attack power (ATT)
    Team B rank x Away Goals conceeded x -1 = Team B's defence (DEF)
ATT + DEF = Team A's offensive odds (higher number better).

Do this 4 times for Team A's attack and defence, and team B's attack and defence.

As an example, for say Arsenal at home to Villa, we would have (for Arsenals attack) 31383 +

Hang on, my reverse math isn't working. Obviously a higher negative number is a good thing, but that doesn't translate just by adding them together. Maybe have say 1000 minus the result? That way the closer to 1000 it is the better?

    Hmm.

I'm just figuring out a way to distinguish a teams attacking/defensive prowess.

for instance, on MMW's calculations, Blackburn has a an overall rating I'd agree with, but they conceded 16 goals at home, and a massive 43 away. The difference in their home/away ranking is only roughly 15 points (from over 700 total). But realistically, the difference between their home/away defence is quite big. So I'd back a free-scoring side to net a load of goals at home against them.

No. 🙂 You want to reflect a team's form - not be nailed on to it! You will see in the second table provision to add this season's current form as well. It will move in, in fractions of 38, as last season's table diminishes, in fractions of 38 ... I hope that's clear ... 🙂

Oh I see that bit. But if you score 40 goals away and concede 40 goals away, that shouldn't give you an even net result.

It should mean that you want a strong attacking player away and no defensive players, incrementally or not.

Because FF is not about overall results, but down to basically, goals and assists, I think they should be the main unit of currency.

Although the form of teams shouls also weigh into it, so a goal against a defensively strong team is weighted more strongly that a goal against west brom.

You will see that ALL the goals are factored into it, boosting/downgrading each fixture as a result ...

I admit, I haven't got around to assists, this season anyway ...

assists don't matter. For there to be a goal, there must also be an assist (in FF) so unless it's from an opposition player, it doesn't matter. It's pretty much a 1:1 ratio goals to assists.

          try this.

Def form = rat. / gc
recent def form = rat. / gc (last 5 games)

Total defensive form = def form + recent def form / 2

now, if someone scores a goal against that side, the goal is worth 1 x total defensive form / 1000. Then that goes into a home/away points tally.

the same thing happens in reverse for conceding goals, taking into account the attacking sides attacking prowess.

It's a bit chicken and egg, but it should work.

it's true, it would be very complex, and mean entering all the scores manually after the game.

however... More data = more precise results...

I'm not saying it should, I'm asking why don't consider it if your looking at stats from previous seasons, theirs a case for saying something like that should considered.

I agree with you in saying why should it continue just because it happened in the past because that's how I play this game, off instincts, I'll quite often pick a player with no form just because I have a feeling. My ticker will be pretty simple, I'll catergories the teams by how well I think theyll do and how hard the game will be against that team, job done! 🙂

                    "Why should that fact continue?"

That, MMW, is the very question I asked myself when I started with Jagielka in my lineup 3 seasons ago.

Weirdly, it was that exact same question that escaped my pursed and thoughtful lips when I began the season before last with Howard in goal, and again when I chose to bring Cahill into my team before even the swallows had flown their merry way back to Africa.

And in a strange and ironic twist, it was those very words again that I wrote over and over again across the walls of my house in my own lifes-blood as I picked Arteta in my starting line-up last year.

                    You get my point.....

    Under 21 (sorry)

My team went from 56th to 446th overnight. Need to do something drastic to climb back up. With everyone basically bringing in the same players, do you think this wildcard team is going to be unique enough to be able to achieve this, or am I going to have to pick an all-Belarussian defence and captain Gutor and pray for a miracle? :p

    Vaclik (4.0 cheapie)

I haven't done my own ticker, but looking at FFS's it looks to me that Chelsea, Wigan, Everton, QPR, Villa, and Fulham have the best fixtures.

I personally would consider the following fixture proof as well Arsenal, Man Utd (allow sometimes they can have a slow start) and Man City.

That would mean that if I was to be going for a pricey player I'd be looking at Lampard, Baines, Chelsea Defender or goalkeeper, RVP, plus Man City defender.

For midprice I'd be looking elsewhere in Everton and Fulham
For cheaper options I'd be looking at Wigan and QPR.

    worth a thought.

That would give me something like this

    Cech (or villa gk)
Baines, Fulham def, QPR def, man city def, villa def, random cheap def.
Lamps - Taarabt (maybe), villa mid, wigan mid,

RVP - Bent - cheap striker (maybe Zamora)

feel free to add any other teams you consider having great early fixtures. At this stage I'm not sure Baines - Lamps - RVP and Bent is doable. But at least three are and I think those four could bring in points in the first six weeks.

Liverpool I have my eye on, but there's so much coming and going that hard to pinpoint a player other than Suarez and I think for his ineveitable high price of at least 9m then RVP and Bent could be better. Friendlies will be key to Liverpool choices.

Baines looks to be the first name on my sheet, defender on penalties with good fixtures is too good to turn down, whatever he costs.

Bent is the second name - on penalties, hugely proven goal scorer

RVP is the third name - if fit, a goal a week, irrespective of the opposition.

Nzogbia failing to move until the last second of the transfer window would be ideal. He plays like a man possessed when he has an agent breathing down his neck.

If Adam goes to Villa or pool then I can't see him getting penalties and can't see him getting as many bonus. If I'm wrong then i'll be all over him like a high wasted trouser salesman over Simon Cowell.

😆 Yeah, I would go with that. Downing might be good at Villa, though. We'll have to keep an eye on Arteta - I think he might have fallen in price. Who will be the man at WBA?

Downing / Albrighton could both do well depending on pricing. Pool have fairly indifferent fixtures, but I think they'll be excellent value. G Jophnson could have dropped nicely in price and I'll be interested to see how Carroll and Suarez price up.

I think they are a wait a week or two to see. Their new players could be marvellous or marveshite. Agree there could be some potential there. But I'm looking for reliables for the first few weeks and with Nolan gone, Barton disgruntled I'm not sure. Demba Ba could be a useful cheap strike option though.

I figure that differential mids and forwards have less chance of scoring 6+ pts than Spain and Czech defenders do of picking up a clean sheet. Otherwise I'd just be picking a balanced side full of the usual suspects and doing okay, but not making real progress. This team could either bomb or do really well, and I guess I'm in the position to take that risk (wouldn't if I was still in the top 100).

Wish I could afford Dockal without compromising my tactic of having an entire Czech/Spain backline or downgrading the likes of Mata, Adrian and Pekhart.

Thanks for your replies, I get the impression that my team should be different enough from the rest of the pack then.

Do people see Kompany as a 6.5 defender this year? By my reckoning he'd have scored 149 last year if classed as a defender. He only got one assist last year too so his scores not potentially inflated by goals/assists he won't replicate. I'd expect him to keep his place and for City to continue to be tight.

I'm seeing him as a definite starter in my team. Probably. Possibly.

Not great (for defenders!) that the mainstay of the team with the highest number of clean sheets only manages 139. Just shows how valuable assits and goals are.

The bonus points at City will be interesting - if Tevez goes there will be a lot more to spread around. I wouldn't be surprised if Kompany didn't pick up more either. Will definitely be intersted to see his price.

City defenders should be a fantastic option for the opening fixtures. Lescott could attract the most bonus points of the defenders, and will be very attractive if not exorbitantly priced and if he isn't rotated. Yaya Toure could also pick up more bonus points if Tevez leaves and should be a great option if he continues playing in an advanced position and is priced anywhere around 6.0 or 6.5. I think there'll be better value to be found in City players than in Chelsea or Man Utd players early in the season.

I've always thought / wondered that Kompany wasn't getting bapage last year as his performances were judged on him being a midfielder, so he was obviously going to struggle in an attacking sense but also if touches of the ball count becuase I imagine playing midfield your gonna get far more. If he's classed as a defender he should get judged as a defender therefore the baps will flood in.

Alonso is 29. There's absolutely no chance Utd would be after him, as well as the other 50 reasons it wouldn't happen. Diarra i could see happening as a Hargreaves replacement, makes a lot of sense in all the sanchez, modric, neymar shenanigans.

        +1 on arbspy

Just make sure you only bet with bookies you've heard of - there are some scams out there where arbitrage sites direct you to scam bookies. And don't pay for the info - arbspy is free, any site that asks for money has to be treated with caution.

Does anyone know from previous seasons what the first televised games are at the start of each season? Is it always championship games or possible that could be a league 1 or 2 game?

I ask because i am on holiday for the first game of the season and hope that Oldham vs Sheffield Utd will be considered....

Any thoughts on Midfielders for next season, Taarabt and Nzogbia would be nailed on if they stayed but cant see it happening.

So options are: Lampard, Downing/Albrighton, Dempsey, Silva, OHara, Arteta/Cahill, Sessegnon, Gerrard/Kuyt................?

So tough to tell, considering it's so early still in the off-season.

As you say with Taarabt, his Fantasy 'value' goes from good with QPR to virtually nil if he went to Chels.

Guess I'm peeing in your cereal here ...

Others I think are worth keeping strongly in mind include Van der Vaart, Nasri, Wilshere (if Fabregas leaves), Yaya Toure and Brunt. Sinclair is being mentioned a bit, but I have seen enough to be sure yet.

Nasri or Fabs if still there after GWK3, yep Sinclair is a good option also, may start with a cheap midfield with some spare cash to upgrade later.

I like Scott Sinclair, hopefully he'll be down as a mid. Plays a very attacking role, on pens, team strong at home (even though newboys in the Premiership).

Yaya Toure? Dont know how much his price will go up.

People been talking about Ben Arfa as well.

U21, Chancer got me wondering about the possible DGW if the Olympic play-off match was included in the Fantasy Game. Well it's not, I emailed the support staff and they actually answered:

    Hi Mika

The play-off game is not included in the fantasy game.

    Regards
    Fantasy Support

(Sorry Chancer if you were playing some kind of mind games with DGW mumbo jumbo)

        ?

Tevez + Higuain are better strikers but I think Argentina need to start changing there style similar to Barca's 4-3-3 with Messi and two of Lavezzi/Aguero/Di Maria. Lavezzi fits in brilliantly on the left of the 3, something I doubt Tevez and Higuain could do.

        Just my opinion though.

Well Messi needs to perform under an Argentinian shirt before throwing Tevez/Higuain and co in the toilets.
To be fair, after Messis performance against Germany (and more broadly in the WC10), Messi does not deserve to have a system built around him, espacially not if it means great players like Tevez are misssing out.
Like CRon, Messi has to perform, but most of all have to get the motivation to win something for Argentina (until then, he can not be compared to the Pele/Maradona/Zidane of this world)
