Theo Walcott will go into next season off the back of the most productive shift of his career. A total of 13 goals across 25 starts for the Gunners in all competitions at last begun to deliver on his much-vaunted potential as one of England’s brightest prospects. Those statistics could, and perhaps should, have been ever better however.

Snubbed in England’s World Cup Squad, Walcott had a point to prove from day one of last season and duly flew out of the traps, blitzing Blackpool at the Emirates in gameweek 2 with a hat-trick and following this up with another quality strike against Blackburn a week later. An ankle injury sustained in England’s Euro Qualifier against Switzerland then de-railed the Walcott express as the absence saw others take their chance – Wenger dropped Walcott to the bench on his return to fitness, bringing him back for an inauspicious return in the 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle. Further bench duty followed.

Walcott did not start another league game until gameweek 19’s 3-1 win over Chelsea – he took his chance in style, a goal and an assist offered a reminder of his early season devastation. Firmly back in favour, Wenger started him in eight consecutive league matches from gameweek 21 onwards. Further ankle problems kept him out briefly in March, before Walcott went on to start seven of the last nine.

Sadly, the early season form had deserted him in the second-half of the campaign. As Arsenal’s title charge whimpered, Walcott similarly backfired – he managed just 2 goals and 2 assists from gameweek 27 onwards, and he failed to add to his tally of 7 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points from that point. Despite a ninth league goal in the final day 2-2 draw at Fulham, Walcott’s season failed to live up to the early promise that hinted he’d be amongst the league’s leading performers and a huge Fantasy asset as a 7.0 midfielder in the FPL.

Key Factors

  • Barring injury, Walcott should enjoy more starts and further prolonged spells in the Arsenal lineup. There will always be fierce competition for places but, with Samir Nasri’s future still in flux and patience wearing thin with Andrei Arshavin, the smart money is on Walcott earning 25+ league starts next term. That should translate into another productive season – double figures in both the goal and assist columns should be a realistic target.

  • Walcott enjoyed a successful season but, while he started the season with a fanfare to bely his Fantasy price tag, like the Gunners themselves, he stuttered at the end of the season and, as a result, may not suffer a major price hike this term.

  • Classed as a midfielder last season, we’d expect a similar situation again. Although regularly employed on the flank by Wenger, Walcott can tuck inside when Robin Van Persie comes deep to dictate play and we’ve seen Walcott’s pace unlocked with great effect by searching through-balls from the Dutchman and skipper Cesc Fabregas. Walcott can play a central attacking role and has expressed an interest in doing so. Should Wenger shift to 4-4-2, we could yet see Walcott given more opportunities down the middle.

  • Arsenal’s opening half of the season looks extremely favourable; while the opening couple of fixtures look testing, things improve drastically soon after. Walcott started last season on fire and will be looking for repeat performances this term. Pre-season form will tell us more.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If he did not come on and score in gw38 for my rival i would have won my mini league by 1 point.

      Enough said.

True. Had to sell him after he got me 1pt as capt in double gw though.

That was the end of my season. Rookie mistake not getting Dempster(c).

Coleman getting a red in gw38 did not help either.

I also find Walcott an extremely frustrating footballer - his shot/pass/cross selection is wrong 80% of the time... however, with Fabs on his way, Nasri and Bendtner potentially following suit and Arshavin out of favour he may well be a certain starter - and when on form he's good for goals and assists at an average price. I'll be keeping an eye on him pre-season.

It has the texture of liquid silk, roughened only by a hint of velvet. The aroma of vanilla is elusive, but there. It is refreshingly sweet, although there is a backdrop of savoury in there somewhere, and a tiny hint of bitterness. It is the only ice cream I have tasted that knocks all the great Italian stuff into a cocked hat!

Video games, specifically. There's a frame delay while a plasma stretches a 480 image to 720/1080. It's almost imperceptable, but it does make a difference. However, I'd still prefer to play them on my 50" than a CRT I think.

But also, older lightguns won't work on plasmas, because they rely on the scanlines of the CRT to figure out where the gun is aimed - and plasmas/LCDs refresh the entire screen at once.

Connor Wickham looks likely to be on his way to Sunderland.

I mentioned this fella when he was playing for England under 16s and there was talk he'd be almost certainly a full England international within 5 years.

What price do you think he'll be available for?... £5.5-6m?

He could be a great budget forward next season.

Re Beyonce. I saw a grand total of 0 Pyramid stage acts so the headline acts didn't bother me. The best gigs were on the other stages. Ok Go, Eels and loads of new bands in the BBC introducing were my highlights.

I think the bid was based on Barca having to sell someone to help fund all their targets...Sanchez and Fabregas are killing their budget...so it was an attempt at that...i wouldn't mind him at the Bridge but at 29years old it would seem less favourable long term...if that's what we're plotting...the mill is full of crazy stories...perhaps this ain't even true...

Nothing on Bellamy yet. We're leading the race for Goodwillie, young Dundee Utd striker who seems sh1t hot but has a downside... currently on a r@pe charge! He should fit in nicely.

Early days, we're way off the team that we'll be starting the season with, and I've no idea whether we'll be decent or not. Playoff finish at best.

What about the robins? We're both chasing after the Middlesbro leftback apparently, and I think he's pretty good. Is David James staying?

yeh weve been linked with goodwillie for a while too but nothing ever came of it. the rape charge has been dropped i think but our forum also pointed out an assault charge or 2 aswell so putting him in cardiff or bristol with the nightlife there it probably wouldnt be a great idea!!!

yeh apparently boro fans dont rate that davies thoas they played him at the back but he was good at watford last season playing def. midfielder (a position we already have 3 players for) so if we buy hium as a defender im a bit concerned!

how we do does depend on maynard, if he stays id say anywhere between 5-12 if we get a good start, if he goes and isnt replaced then a relegation battle could be on the cards

james has said hell stay but has delayed signing his deal so maybe hes waiting for a payday at a prem club??

Hope he managed to save all those trees and football pitches he was campaigning for.

Never met a guy with a shorter fuse than RBJ. Wonder what he was like in real life?

    Hey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misnomer

Guinea pigs originally come from the Andes:
"Guinea pigs are not pigs and do not come from Guinea. The "Guinea" may be a re-analysis of "Guyana", though they originate from the Andes and not Guyana."

They are literally the most afraid thing EVER.
