His arrival as a marquee signing was heralded as an example of Man City’s pulling power but David Silva took time adapting to the more robust nature of the Premier League last season following his move from Valencia.

Silva lasted the full 90 minutes in last season’s opener away to Spurs but the following three gameweeks saw him given just 16 minutes game time and his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price plummeted accordingly, dropping from 9.0 to 8.5 by gameweek 6.

Re-installed to the first XI in gameweek 5 for a trip to Wolves, Silva made three straight starts for City but as the club travelled to Blackpool in early October, while Carlos Tevez had already plundered 5 goals, 2 assists and 6 Bonus Points, Silva had yet to score or assist and was dropped to the subs bench.

Coming on for a twenty-three minute cameo that night at Bloomfield Road, Silva grabbed a goal and an assist to serve a reminder of his skills to Roberto Mancini and establish himself firmly in his manager’s first-team thoughts from that point on. Thirteen straight starts followed and by New Year’s Day, Silva had picked up a further four assists and 6 Bonus Points.

A run of games from the beginning of February saw Silva finally settle and his performances started to reflect this consistent streak, as he scored or assisted in seven of his next nine starts. His Fantasy Returns, particularly at home, meant Silva even emerged as a viable captaincy option, with his four appearances at Eastlands during this period harvesting (7,11,10,7). While the final three league games proved disappointing, Silva continued to pick up the Bonus and benefit from City’s solid defence, finishing the season on 144 FPL points.

Key Factors

  • Despite his shaky start, Silva went on to record nine assists- a personal best. With his previous high being seven for Valencia, it’s a clear indication of his ability to unlock Premier League defences with greater precision. Having adapted to the division, he’ll go into next season with confidence and double figure assist returns should be expected, perhaps in the region of 12-15.

  • In addition to his attacking threat, Silva played in front of a defence that chalked up 18 clean sheets last season- City midfielders have a greater chance of picking up the extra 1 FPL point for a clean sheet than most others. Or two points, if they have the armband.

  • Silva seemed to catch the eye of the Bonus Judges with far more regularity in the last stage of the season, further example of his growing influence on matches. He picked up 20 for the campaign but 12 of those came in his last ten games- a cause for optimism for potential Fantasy owners ahead of the new campaign.

  • With nine wins and a draw in their last ten home games of 2010/11, City are becoming a formidable force at Eastlands and, as shown, Silva is one of the main beneficiaries. Their season opener at home to Swansea will surely see City heavily backed and with Wigan visiting Eastlands in gameweek 4, Mancini’s side could rack up the Fantasy Points straight from the off.

  • Silva was priced at 9.0 last term and a price hike doesn’t look likely. Yaya Toure started at 5.5 and racked up 146 points and in light of his Fantasy value, Silva mostly stayed under the FPL radar. If anything, a slight drop in price to 8.5 is a possibility.

Unless he's 8.0 then I don't think I'll bother - the thing about Man City is that even their stars don't give decent playing time.

If Mancini could just make his mind up and field his greatest player week in, week out then Adam Johnson would be top of my wish list.

that's a reason not to pick him at least. playing time wise he looks fine. the one time mancini did rest him (along with de jong) he came out afterwards and apologised because your team tonked them 3-0. i'd put silva in their 'power 6' of players mancini will try his best to start every game (hart, kompany, de jong, yaya toure, silva, tevez if there)

I think it's more to do with the fact that Arsenal haven't won any trophies in 6 years, and are playing hard-ball with his contract.

Meanwhile, a team who has won the league 4 times in the last 5 years, and been in the CL final 3 times in the last 4, has declared an interest in him.

I doubt Nasri's spending his holiday in Las Vegas on twitter checking what Henry Winter thinks Arsenal are doing wrong in the transfer market, or what Nina Bracewll-Smith is bitching about now she's made shitloads out of the shares she inherited by selling up.

I'm still going for Hart next season, with the cheapest goal keeper listed, but maybe West Brom's keeper could be a bargain?

    Hart (cheapest keeper priced)

It's probably been already discussed, but sure I'll bring it up again...

Anyone think there'll be any significant rule changes for the FPL this season? And are there any you'd like to see yourself?

Personally, I'd love the emergency captain rule to be done away with, and we go back to one wildcard, but see neither happening.

I'd like the same changes, Sas. There were several posters in favour of rewarding defenders more (e.g. 2 pts @ 60 mins if they have kept a cleansheet until then) but I don't like that at all. Defenders are cheaper (there's normally a 50% difference in price between the most expensive defender and foward) so you would expect them to score less anyway.

Also, awarding points for almost keeping a CS is like awarding points to a forward for almost scoring. A bit ridiculous if you ask me.

Finally in this scenario, a defender that concedes in the opening 5 minutes but holds the opposition at bay for the rest of the game would end up scoring 2 points less than one who concedes in the last 5 minutes. The idea has far too many holes in it.

this fabregas stuff on the news. people saying he wants out as if it's a bad thing or him not being loyal. he's been there for 8 years (a long time in my book), has been brilliant, and the best team in the world want him, a team where he's from and he grew up supporting. if he goes good luck luck to him. he has every right to go if he does. i think the fact he doesn't want to go anywhere else if he leaves arsenal is pretty loyal

Agreed. I thought people were very harsh about his performances last season, summarising "his heart wasn't in it" and so on. The truth is injury badly disrupted it, and the team was altered slightly so we weren't as dependant on his as we were the season before.

His loyalty has come at a cost though. While it's a nice gesture, if he'd have come out and said "I just want out; Barca, Real, Man City, come and get me," Arsenal probably could have made another £15 - £20 million out of him.

Oh no, I'm not criticising. Just pointing it out.

He probably knows it increases his chances of going to Barca by coming out and saying he doesn't want to go anywhere else.

But if it had have happened, it wouldn't have been appreciated. Arsenal fans would be calling him a moneygrabbing judas even if he had genuinely intended to begin a rigged auction. Doubt Barca would have been too pleased about it either!

MF at this stage you must just want the two deals (Nasri and Fab) either done or for Arsenal to come out and say they are not selling. If this drags on until closer to the transfer window then it could derail next season as there will not be adequate time to prepare new signings/tactics.

I think arsenal should set a deadline for both deals to be done by or else commit to keeping both players for another season even if it means losing nasri for nothing next year.

I think we would be with the Fabregas deal, but it's harder with Nasri because he's holding all the high cards.

I've always said we should offer Nasri what he wants, and if he asks to leave try to ship him out to Real, Munich or one of the Milan clubs.

We do have the choice with Fabregas, as he's got 4 more years on his deal, so if Nasri does go, we shouldn't sell him too.

Why is Wenger playing hardball? Surely £110,000 is within their reach, especially when Cesc leaves.

With United, City, Milan and Chelsea all contacting his agent, it's probably gone up now.

We are normally pretty strict with the highest wages, which is strange when crap like Denilson are getting 60k.

If Nasri goes into next season having not signed a new contract it will hang over the club like a shadow all season though. I really think tell him to either sign by x date or sell him. As you say a move to Italy, Germany or Spain might be the best bet even if it means accepting less money.

Let's face it - if Citeh are seriously in for him he'll be pushing so hard for that move and the extra £ that'll get him I think it'll be a formality. Personally I reckon they'll get their man for around 15 million but would like to see Johnson thrown into the deal.

Depends if he really wants to go there I suppose. Not every player want to got to Man City. Alexis Sanchez is a prime example.

And while I'm not quite of the Jamsiep persuasion on Johnson, I wouldn't be interested in having him at Arsenal.

Yeah that's true - not been following things too closely really. But I think he could feel he's in with a good chance of trophies at either of the Manc clubs and there's surely no way Wenger's letting him go to United.

Re Johnson - I reckon the boy's class and more importantly could be fantasy dynamite if he gets a decent run. Arsenal could use someone who can (& is willing to) beat defenders, though it'd probably be drilled out of him by Christmas.

i think henin was the big loss for women's tennis as she was the one who dominated women's tennis for yrs along with serena...no player is consistent in gs these days...wozniacki wins almost all the wta tours but fails in gs just like safina, ivanovic, jankovic did when they were no.1...

I always thought Harry was a good judge of player but the last couple of seasons has rocked that faith a bit.

        Evidence:

        1) He was on the verge of letting Bale go out on loan to Forest before he was forced through injury to throw him into the team.

        2) He has let Adel Taarabt leave and blossom into one of the most talked about players this summer.

        3) He persists with Defoe even though the dog on the street knows he is not good enough for a top 4 team.

        4) He plays VDV on the right wing when it is plain the guy has no pace and no ability to influence games from there.

        5) He let Kyle walker move to villa on loan last year when spurs own rb's were dodgy to say the least and ended up playing a cb in kaboul there for a finish.

Thats all I have for now but I think I am missing one transfer of a player that he let go for pittance who turned into a top class player that I can't think of.

What do the rest of ye think?

Might depend on Tevez for me - if he's stil around I think he's the one to have from City, if he isn't then Silva is a good alternative. Having both may be too expensive and an over commitment to City, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
