Bolton made their first summer signing on Friday, confirming the capture of Swansea midfielder Darren Pratley on a free. The former Fulham trainee was out of contract with the Swans having declined the opportunity to stay with the Welsh club having helped them to promotion via the play-offs.

The 26-year-old arrives at the Reebok on a four-year-deal and will contest for a start in a Bolton midfield which will be missing Stuart Holden who remains sidelined with a knee injury. Right now then, Pratley looks to have every chance to stake a claim for starts and will join Bolton’s tour of the US looking to impress his new boss Owen Coyle.

“It was nice to leave Swansea on a high after gaining promotion to the Premier League and I’m now looking forward to showing the fans what I can do here. Now I’m really looking forward to Monday and getting into training and meeting the lads. The manager outlined some exciting plans and we had a good chat. I’m fully focussed on playing well for Bolton.â€

The Statistics

Pratley begun his career at Craven Cottage but made just a single appearance for Fulham before spending two successful loan spells with neighbours Brentford. Five goals in 46 appearances for the Bees attracted the attention of then Swansea boss Roberto Martinez and, in the summer of 2006, he joined for a modest fee of £100,000.

He made 28 appearances in his first season in Wales, fetching just a single goal but followed that up with 5 goals and 4 assists in the following season after making 39 starts in the League one promotion year. Pratley’s output increased dramatically as he settled into his Liberty Stadium surroundings, he notched 4 goals and 4 assists in 33 starts in his first Championship season in 2008/09 and bettered that again in 2009/10 by finding the net on 7 occasions.

Last season was his best for the club however – 10 goals and 5 assists represented a handsome return for a player who made 28 league starts before contract wrangles and the form of others begun to restrict his involvement to bench duty. Overall Pratley registered 47 shots on goal in the league, striking the woodwork on three occasions – he ended the season with 12 goals from 32 appearances in all competitions.

The Prospects

Pratley himself offered us a handy synopsis of what he will offer to Bolton on his arrival on Friday…

“The fans can expect someone who always gives 100 per cent. I like to get around the pitch and am a bit of a box-to-box player and hopefully I can chip in with a few goals. I managed to get 12 in my last season with Swansea. Hopefully I can continue to score goals from midfield at Bolton.”

That goal threat was surely key to Coyle’s pursuit of Pratley. Bolton scored just 13 goals from midfield areas last season, relying heavily on the strike partnership of Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies in the opening months, with Daniel Sturridge arriving from Chelsea on loan to fire 8 goals and keep the Trotters afloat over the final ten gameweeks.

Pratley is a tireless, athletic player who will fit in well with Bolton’s work ethic. With the influential Holden absent for at least the first month of the season, he could establish himself alongside Fabrice Muamba and, if he can supply an early goal or two, could well cement a starting role.

Fantasy Managers have been deprived of effective potential within the Bolton midfield, with Martin Petrov, Matt Taylor and Lee Chung-Yong failing to maintain regular starts in Coyle’s lineup. Pratley’s engine and physical presence could see him jump the pecking order and, if he can bring his goal threat to the top level, Fantasy Managers may well take notice when Bolton’s fixtures fall in favour.

My good-ish bet in the wimbledon final today.

Nadal to win the 1st set 6-4, 7-5 & 7-6 @ 5.8, 16 & 7.2 respectively. Tenner on each outcome, so least i stand to win is £18 & most is £120, if either of the above scores occur.

Wilshere will move on if he thinks Arsenal are f*cked- besides if he's good enough he should be able to cope with Arsenal's lack of Fabregas/nasri.

Arsenal haven't sold anyone yet, and if we do, they'll be replaced.

Everyone is talking as if we'll sell Fabregas and Nasri, then stick the £50/£60 million we make from them under the bed.

We're also looking to sell the likes of Bendtner and Denilson, so it suggests that we're willing to bring in some new faces.

Tis pretty funny sometimes on here - two weeks ago 5under1and were 'doomed', now they have a few new faces and they're considered to be 'safe'. Similarly Newcastle were being written off here because we sold Nolan. Personally I think the signings of Cabaye, Ba, Marveaux more than make up for Nobby.
Arsenal will be fine unless they sell at the last minute of the transfer window and have to panic buy, this young Argy lad sounds a good prospect, Gervinho looks handy too.
Clichy is no great loss in my opinion.

I think this season could be a bad one for your boys if the new signings don't gel & you get off to a bad start.

Nolan's decision to drop down a level when he's at a good club is very surprising. There must be problems behind the scenes.

Mind you... don't expect Bolton to fair any better.

Well Nolan went simply for the long contract and the cash. Fair enough really, he's 29 and wants to look after his family's future.
He wanted £65k pw from us on a 5 year deal, I think the board were right to refuse him that. I'm pretty optimistic at the moment. I think Barton will play for us this season and we'll see where we are next summer.

Selling Nolan wasn't a bad call per se, but he has to be replaced. You lot still need another players, besides Ba, who can score goals.

There could be problem if two from Barton, Gutierrez and Enrique leave.

He HAS been replaced - by Cabaye. I don't think Nolan would have got into the first choice XI. Yeah they're still looking to sign a couple of players, and if more leave they need to be replaced by quality too.
Basically what my original point should have said was - there is plenty of time for Arsenal (or Newcastle) to replace players before the window closes. I'd only worry at the end of August.

In my opinion, Fabregas and Nasri going could be good news for Arsenal.
The current system isn't working, I don't rate Fabregas as a second striker (he doesnt score enough goals) and that seems to be where he wants to play.

Arsenal should sign some no nonsense centre halfs with premier league experience, a goal scoring forward to play up front with RVP and an out and out left winger.

Looks like Wenger has finally given in to the Paul Merson on his shoulder *shudder* and is going for Cahill.

If we do sell both, I'd imagine Wenger will change the side's tactics, and build around RvP and whoever else we bring in.

Giovani Dos Santos - anyone rate him at all? He's like the forgotten man at Spurs, but always seems to do well when he plays for Mexico. He's still pretty young too, but I haven't heard of any clubs coming in for him.
He'd be a good FPL prospect at a smaller club.

      I like these false facts.

The actual facts are Fpl has opened on four different dates and five different days over the last five years. It'll be soon enough, anyone who pretends to know otherwise is talking out of their pooper. Myself included.

I was all for him when strauss was in the side (who can score at a very fast rate) as he was there to perform the anchor role. But cook and trott is far too negative for the powerplay overs (which is when they often come together), and obviously you can't drop cook!

well most teams usually concentrate on not losing wickets early on in the powerplay these days rather than scoring qucikly early on plus he is ur most consistent batsman ...kp,morgan n bell are all attacking batsman who can take the run rate up later on and replacing him with someone bopara who is shit isn't that good either ...
p.s.ecb decision to make ccok captain when he hadn't played odi for 2 yrs before this series was a rubbish decision 😛

Am I right in thinking that player prices don't change before GW1 kicks off.
So there is no real advantage in getting your squad together weeks before the season opens?
I might as well pick my squad the evening before the GW. Like I normally do...
