The expected Arsenal exodus has begun with Man City this evening officially announcing the signing of Gael Clichy for an undisclosed fee – £7 million is widely reported as the sum involved.

The left-back joins the Eastlands revolution, signing a four-year deal after spending eight years with the Gunners.

The move comes after lengthy speculation surrounding Clichy’s future at the Emirates; the player was about to enter the final year of his contract and had previously indicated that he was unwilling to discuss new terms. Liverpool were also amongst the clubs linked to his services.

Clichy becomes the first player to slip from Arsene Wenger’s grasp with the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri also expected to follow him out of the club. We may well see developments with both players in the next seven days; in the immediate future however, Wenger is surely likely to be looking to strengthen at left-back following Clichy’s departure. Newcastle’s Jose Enrique is a commonly reported target for the Gunners – he resumed training with the Magpies today with his agent remaining tight lipped on his future. Watch this space on that one.

Meanwhile, a full Scout Report on Clichy, assessing his likely prospects at City and his impact on the Roberto Mancini’s options will follow.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

...and also Bendtner being touted...not a major loss but another possible departure nonetheless. It's not the numbers but the talent that's the concern - Bendtner excluded perhaps 😉

& player X & player Y & player . . . . Tabloids are in a feeding frenzy. Wait until they realise Darren Dein is the agent of Cesc, Nasri & RVP.

It's not the players who are leaving that gives me significant cause for concern, it's the quality (here's hoping) of the (here's hoping again) incoming players.

that site never ceases to amaze. another ignorance fuelled article. man city had just finished 10th when clichy made those comments. they're now a champions league side who are more than just a big wage packet for a player.

the point is clichy would never have gone to man city 2 years ago. now you can fairly argue that it's not a step down from arsenal. i'd also bet his wages are far from spectacular with the new rules being phased in. maybe he ran out of patience with arsenal, maybe he wanted a new challenge. by the sounds of it it was liverpool or man city and as it stands man city is the more attractive destination football wise.
imo you can slate arsenal (even if it's just harmless banter) for not winning anything. but then is it right to slate ne of their players for trying their luck elsewhere? elsewhere being a side who finished above arsenal last season and in theory are on the up.
man city isn't a hopeful project anymore, there's something tangible there now in champions league football. this is far too cheap a shot for man utd fans or disgruntled gooners imo. the comments are no longer in context

Sorry- was having my supper! Yeah, I agree it's more tangible, and I'm certainly not slating clichy, but I still think he is contradicting himself as the calibre of players city were pursuing/signing made them more than just a prospect (as much as I enjoyed their losses against us!).

yeah can't deny the comments are ironic and contradictory, regardless of how outdated they are. thanks to champions league football man city don't need financial incentives to attract players. plus they can't anyway, whatever wages they offer now clichy will be the same the costs they'll be having to cover without the aid of sheik mansour when the new financial rules kick in

Top quality midfielder was Mr Scholes. Totally crap at tackling though . . .

The Arsenal kitty was going to be bare following their decision to relocate & build a new stadium, hence the decision to down the 'youth route' many seasons ago.

Truth is, financially Arsenal have been punching above their weight for a long time. The sponsorship monies received were front loaded. Little left in the pot after financing the stadium.

The business model is sound. The trophy cabinet is bare.

That'll make the bean counters happy.

              AP and Churchill.

All this sounds too sadly eerily like my beloved QPR. Expensive season tix, owned by billionaires and not giving anything back to the fans.

At least Arsenal will buy some players before the new season though.

agreed. stadiums like the emirates don't grow on trees. i can also partly sympathise with those who believe wenger's frugality has gone too far now and is just stubborness/trying to prove a point.

Surely barca cannot afford Sanchez and Fab. If fab signs, do we really expect sanchez to stay happily at Udinese? Surely not. If not Barca for Sanchez then who?

surely it would between chelsea and united, though city would fling some cash at him too.....

Utd don't need him. Chelsea do i suppose.

Or Barca could just sell a few players to afford them both. Still aaaaaaaaaaages to go in this transfer window remember.

I think Sanchez would give Barca a bit of a problem as I'm not sure where you play him.
He's certainly got flair and in a team without Messi then it makes sense, but If Leo is given the freedom he normally enjoys, then Pedro and (to a lesser extent) VIlla have to work a bit harder to compensate. I can't see Sanchez doing this as well - especially if it is Pedro he's replacing.
I can only assume he's back up and therefore going to get games when others don't.

Agreed. I think he'd struggle to cement a place for at least 2 or 3 years. And I think it would be bad for Barca to play him much for the reasons you state.

Sanchez is not a player that you buy cos you "need" him. He is a player that is so good that you buy him if you can. He is that good - the next Ronaldo.

He'll be 30 this year, he's at his best right now and will be for a few more years. Selling world class players to make sure they secure someone who has only had one good season is lunacy.

His position is very similar to the one he played for Valencia and often for Spain, it just looks like a winger on paper. It's more of a striking role in play imo.

City can't be surprised by this. He's been itching to leave for months.

The problem he has is I expect he'll have to take a massive pay cut to engineer a move anywhere. If he wants it so bad, then his choice is pretty simple.

Silva, Johnson and Balotelli behind Dzeko might be a rather better prospect this season than it was last time. I'd have thought they'll maintain a top 3 spot without too much trouble.

Argentina/Brazil is actually the one place I could see him getting the wages.

The South American economy is growing and private finance can raise big bucks when it wants to. The number of big names heading back to Brazil recently highlights that perfectly (Ronaldinho is on huge money and Ronaldo also still earns tonnes even though he's retired).

fair play. surely that's the destination then?
if his argument is homesickness or the language barrier then that rules out italy, and spain is only really real madrid who as far i'm aware have expressed no interest yet (they've already got higuain).
back to boca? if english was a problem for his family surely portuguese is not much better

Maybe Boca. Riquelme apart, the team doesn't have too many 'stars' (though Araujo looks like he might well be one soon), so if they can find the cash, I don't see why not.
Corinthians is his other former club, and they have gone hard with the cash in recent years. The aforementioned Ronaldo deal and Adriano coming back, but they've just signed Liedson to replace the phenomenon, so striking spots seem full up.
I think he's angling for Italy/Spain and the homesickness is a 'Not England/Manchester' thing, but I doubt any of them will find the cash (Madrid, or a big Italian bank loan seems like the only way).
