At the end of last week Blackburn boss Steve Kean took several days out of his summer schedule to fly to Canada prior to the pre-season tour of Austria. The future of David “Junior” Hoilett was the cause of the diversion; with Hoilett out of contract at Ewood at the end of the coming season, Kean wasted no time in taking the initiative with contract discussions as the Premier League elite begin to wake up to the attacker’s talents.

Hoilett was unquestionably the big plus to come out of Kean’s first season in charge of the club. At times, he was a saving grace – popping up with priceless goals that ultimately helped to preserve Blackburn’s tenuous grip on Premier League survival.

In Fantasy terms Hoilett emerged as an unlikely source of points within a less than profitable Rovers squad. Five goals, an assist and 10 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus points were a decent return for a player valued at just 4.5 in the initial player list, a price that dropped to just 4.0 at the tail-end of the season – a period which saw Hoilett come to the fore.

Having been frustrated at first-team opportunities up until Christmas, Hoilett’s pace and trickery was unleashed by the turn of the year and his influence on Rovers grew significantly. Classed as a forward in some Fantasy games, most notably the FPL, Hoilett’s potential was somewhat hindered but, despite a role on the Rovers flanks, his goal tally began to justify that classification. By the end of the season Hoilett has claimed the mantle as Blackburn’s key attacking talent and ensured that Kean would pull out all the stops to ensnare him on a new long-term contract.

Certainly the signs are good for Kean and Rovers – Hoilett has expressed his desire to remain at the club and that might just be great news for Fantasy managers who may well turn to his attacking talent again this season.

“I am happy at Blackburn Rovers playing for them consistently and of course I would be prepared to sign a new contract…I just kept focused, listened to family and friends and when I got my shot I had to take it. I had to work hard and capitalise on every opportunity I got. I did that and showed a consistent performance to keep myself in the side.”

Key Factors

  • Hoilett’s five league goals last season were fetched from just 11 appearances from gameweek 24 onwards. During that spell Hoilett also earned 9 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points to emerge as a very credible budget target for the season run-in. A strong end to the season would suggest that Hoilett is capable of hitting the ground running this term.

  • Those Bonus Points were no fluke. The Opta statistics available to our Members indicate that his influence on Blackburn’s overall attacking threat were significant. Hoilett’s statistics for “Successful Dribbles”, “Key Passes” and average shots per game were easily the most impressive on show within the Rovers squad. That would indicate that Hoilett is likely to keep earning strong Bonus returns should he remain at Ewood.

  • The FPL will be thinking long and hard about Hoilett’s classification this season. There’s every chance that he will be reverted to a midfielder which would surely guarantee greater consideration from Fantasy managers. As a low-to-mid price midfield option, Hoilett would be a very worthy target. If he should remain a forward, Hoilett’s price would have to remain in the budget bracket to encourage investment.

  • Steve Kean must surely look to extend Blackburn’s attacking options in the Summer. While this could take some of the responsibility from Hoilett in terms of goals, it could also aid his development and certainly increase his potential for assists should he be played in tandem with a regular goal threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's the ridiculous 'United's that annoy me... Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End merge and you get Newcastle United. That makes sense.

Manchester United? Manchester isn't United, there's two teams and they can't stand each other. How have we got Sheffield United when Wednesday are hanging around on the other side of the City.

I used to write "Man U" but United fans insist that's a really offensive name and has ink to the Munich air disaster or something like that.

I'm not buying into it personally, seems like a very basic abbreviation, but it's not worth the conflict to hit one less key.

I do a similar things with defender combinations. Or if I’ve got 4 midfielders and 2 forwards who I’ll generally play ever week and want to find a good 3rd forward to rotate with the cheap midfielder I know I want.

I’ve got a separate ticker in Excel which I use for that… just hide the columns I don’t want. But agree it would be useful to be able to do it on the Scout ticker.

So I’ll start off with the 38 columns… or more likely the first 12-15 gameweeks… I’ll remove all the columns were cheap midfielder has a decent game. Then I’ll remove all the columns were the cheap forward I’m looking at has good games. The columns left are the potential tough weeks. Then I’ll look at my planned defenders for those weeks… if most of them are good I know I have the possibility of playing 4 at the back that week. If most of them are bad I can see my planned team leaves with me too many bad weeks (particularly if my star players are away or in tough games) and I’ll have a rethink.

Copying it worked for me… I just left clicked by ‘new’ for Arsenal’s first game and dragged across and down to Wolves and the first 15 games. Copied and pasted to Excel. Apart from needing to rejig the first columns to get the team names sorted out it’s all there. Haven’t done it but I’m assuming it can be repeated for the weeks after week 15. Copied across the colours and everything.

You may want to play around with the "paste special" feature. Many times when you copy type from a website like this is attaches the html and other features in it. So when you choose paste special you can denote that you want text only. You may also need to play with the format by clicking Format--->format cells-->alignment tab--->text control: wrap text. This is the latest excel version, yours may be old which means it'll probably be easier than the above directions.

if you have a vertical list, I think wrap text may be what you need to play with.

Unless we don't hear anything today I don't expect it to open until next week. Do they normally release the date before it opens again or does it just happen?

We were tipped off last season but I don't know if that's a regular thing. I still think it'll be this week. Looking back over the past few years, it's opened on pretty much a different weekday each time, so Thursday or Friday are no less likely than next week.

I think that was because of the new rules.

It started on the 12th last year and that was apparently late because of the World Cup so you would think it would be either tomorrow, Friday or Monday at the latest.

Looking back on mails for last year it opened at about 3 - 3:30pm on the 12th. so given it was held up by other comps going on last year I would suspect tomorrow after lunch. just my thoughts on it is all.

I know how you feel,it's better to let players go early if that's what they want so you have time to replace them before the season gets underway and new players have time to fit in.

I always thought Gignac was a bit of a lumbering oaf.

Not that I think that's got anything to do with his Romani roots. Mihajlovic was from a gypsy family and was on of the best free-kick takers ever.

He can look that way at times because of his gypsy roots he drinks and eats way too much, even been warned by club to stop or be released, but when he is fit I think he is a tidy player.

Do you think all the stick Torres got for under-performing after his move to Chelsea is putting players off in case they receive similar abuse? I know part of Torres' stick was due to the 50m price tag but still might play on a player's mind...

Doubt it. Torres is one of the biggest names in football, and has scored in the European Championship final. He should be able to handle pressure.

He needs a good rest and a pre-season to get his form back up.

He really does have no face up skills, passing skills and I'm wondering, between him and Chamakh, have either of them ever taken a shot from further that 4 feet away?

Crazy isn't it! At least hendo is very young and can play different roles. Don't forget you can add aquilani to that list too.

          +1 on Meireles, very disappointing.

I hope Kenny knows what he's doing. I suppose Hendo may play wider but u reckon hes a future replacement for Gerrard. Adam is just an odd one, suppose he has set pieces and Carroll thrived off Bartons at Newcatle. I'm worried he will drop Lucas and then well see how valuable he's become to us. I also feel sorry for Spearing, he was excellent towards the end of the season now he looks like being way down the pecking order again.

Yeah hendo and spearing are good for depth as they'll be taking over from gerrard eventually. Lucas should be first name on the team sheet imo. We may see more of the 3-5-2 with Lucas, Adam, stevie in the middle. jonjo won't be getting much of a look in either.
Personally I'd like to see Carroll used more as a plan b off the bench or starting vs certain opponents, with these mids were better off playing suarez up top on his as a false 9.
Feck knows though, at least we'll have options 😛

+1 on all that. I agree we could see something like:

              -----------Carra Agger Skrtel-----------
              Hendo Gerrard Lucas Adam Johnson
              --------------Carroll Suarez--------------

Suppose we don't no what Kenny thinks of Kuyt, I know he gets a lot of stick but I usually feel better when he's in the side and he always puts in a hell of a shift.

I was gonna write expected teams for 4-3-3 4-5-1 & 4-4-2 but theirs just too many permutations 🙁

I like this one, but let's see...

Well there's the fact that for professional atheletes, their work shoes are likely very suited!

Other than that, a sport without specific footwear requirements... Archery? Anything not requiting a great deal of movement. Weight lifting? Polo? Touring car racing?

I'll have them both! (but seperate them at the edge).

So physical dexterity would possibly rule out running and cycling, but include bowling and darts.

Just physical fitness would be the opposite.

I can't thing of many recognised sports that don't inclue one or both though. hmmm... what about shooting? Maybe that wouldn't count as dexterity, but hand-eye co-ordination. And possibly snooker for that matter as well (though I don't consider either of those 'sports' personally)
