Reports are surfacing this afternoon from Chelsea’s Cobham training ground that Michael Essien has suffered a knee injury in training earlier today. With rumours sweeping the internet suggesting cruciate knee ligament damage, the club would only comment:

“Michael Essien suffered an injury to his right knee during training this week. He will undergo tests over the next few days to determine the extent of that injury. Until we have the full results of those tests we will not be commenting further.”

The prognosis won’t be known for a day or two but if confirmed as serious, this news will be a bitter blow for new Blues boss André Villas-Boas as he looks to freshen up the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign. With their interest in Luka Modric now seemingly quashed by Tottenham, this latest midfield setback will surely see Chelsea re-enter the transfer market with more intent.

Worryingly for the player and club is that Essien has previously fallen foul to such an injury; he missed six months of the 2008-09 season with anterior cruciate ligament damage caused while playing for Ghana in September. Essien also suffered medial ligament damage to his left knee in January 2010, forcing the player to miss last year’s African Cup of Nations and World Cup and, with his performances last season not quite up to “The Bison’s†dynamic best, questions have been raised as to just how much these spells on the sidelines have affected Essien’s long-term game.

Ramires’ first-team minutes look the most likely to be boosted by the injury; Villas-Boas likes plenty of energy and industry from his midfield three and the Brazilian was, perhaps, Essien’s main rival for a starting place in the upcoming campaign.

The next few weeks will undoubtedly see Villas-Boas’ first-team start to take shape, and Fantasy Managers will hope the pre-season friendlies, combined with Roman Abramovich’s millions, shed some light on the Chelsea manager’s intentions.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

FPL might list him as a MID this time round, and Moyes has already said that he intends playing him at right-back more this season. So not a good choice til we know for definite on both counts.

I think there is a 99.9% chance Coleman will be classed as a mid for this season.

Which would mean he wouldn't get in my team, too inconsistent and a big rotation risk.

If Utd do sign both Sneijder and Nasri ..... bring on barca!

(even though nasri is still overrated)

Nasri overrated? In your opinion maybe but certainly not in mine 🙂

I don't think United want them both, think they want either or, but both would make United's midfield superb.

+1 I never had him last season and always regretted it. Even at £8.0m I reckon he's worth it if you look at some of the mid's (expected) prices.

I hate it when people say Arsenal should buy Given. he's exactly the kind of goalkeeper we don't need. A shot-stopper who has no command of his area. Half the goals we concede are from set-pieces, we need a 6'4 goalkeeper like Chesney, who's willing to shout at defenders and puck some balls out of the air.

Baines would also be a silly move. He's overrated because he's got a good delivery on him, but that isn't really the way we play.

I'd want Parker, but as a squad player; Song is way better. And if we're playing fantasy football with Arsenal (so to speak) lets have someone who is actually good in there, like Hummels or Subtoic, rather than Cahill.

Given is a quality keeper. Scezny is ok, but needs time, loan him out again.

Baines is not only a good fast dribbler, but also a good crosser, which is what Chamack can be used for when brought off the bench.

Not a chance in hell Song is better than Parker!!! Song is a DM, he holds on to the ball to much.

Cahill is class & proven in the EPL, id even take Dann.

MF is completely correct re: Given. I love the guy, he's a national hero over here. But he has NEVER been a keeper that can command his box. Add to this the fact that he's had a couple of serious shoulder injuries in recent years, and I wouldn't be going near if I were a top club looking for an ideal solution to my keeper situation.

I don't think Arsenal have a goalkeeper situation. Szczesny is one of the most talented goalkeepers around, and has pretty much everything in his locker to go n to be a world class one.

Sure he's young, but he's the same age as De Gea, and no one would dare say that United had made a mistake buying him.

Time will tell with De Gea. If Szczesny is reasonably priced again, I'll have him in my team without a second look.

I still love Given though 🙂

Ridiculous statement re Song. In Arsenal's wins over United, Chelsea and man City last season he completely bossed the game. He's more powerful, athletic and tenacious than Parker. Strange that you accuse Song of holding on to the ball too long -as that's exactly Wenger's reservation with Parker, he's not a technically gifted as Song, and takes one too many touches in possession.

song would fit as a box to box player for a midtable team, what arsenal needs is someone to clean the mess behind their front line the way hargreaves used to when he had legs

Song did that brilliantly the season before last, but last season Wenger wanted him to press forward more so we could win the ball higher up the pitch.

I think that tactic is quite hit-and-miss. It's very effective against a side who are willing to attack us, but not so much if they're just going to absorb and counter (this could go some way to explaining why Arsenal's away record last season was so good, yet home form was less impressive).

That's why is was nice to see Wenger move him back into a holding role vs. United, and it worked well as he marked Rooney out of the game.

totally agree, and he is too inexperienced to call those shots by himself, wenger needs to understand that u cannot give a young lad a role that depends too much on him taking the right decisions.

He doesn't. I quite agree with MF. He looked great at Newcastle because he had lots of shots to save. Good shot stopper, but Arsenal need a Van Der Sar sort, Szezczerrs could (note the could) be on his way to being a good keeper.

Given would work if you had a defence who could defend as then he could stop the shots.

Baines... Arsenal don't have good delivery???! Surely that is the way you play (disregarding the annoying intricate passing failures that Barca do so well)?

I must admit I know nothing about Hummels or Subtoic.

Despite all this, I think rohn's original idea was spot on... nut do Aresenal have the balls to really go for it, or are we going to see another rash of young hopefuls shipped in?

parker will slow them down, despite being a good player.

id go for mertsaker at the back, and why not sketelenberg (definitly spelled wrong i know)

but most of all, wenger needs players with high or reasonable workrate to compensate for teh likes of arshavine and nasri and walcott... who dnt contribute at all, since he loves french, valbuena (a 5'4" midfielder/winger from marseille) would be a good bet balanced by the like of rodwell.

Now here's some sense. Jose Enrique would be a serious upgrade at left back.

I'd much prefer Mertesacker to Cahill, but he's still a little slow. I think Valbuena would be a good addition, but not keen on Rodwell - I've seen exactly nothing to suggest the hype around him is justified.

the reason rodwell ddnt quite go on top yet is because his role isnt clearly defined in everton yet since they shift their midfield based on injuries and he found himself pushing forward too many times which is the role fellaini should play when fit.

however the player is an excellent ball winning mid, a position played by neville most of the times (again to cover for injuries) and tackling and simple passing holding mid is all what arsenal needs.

Agreed. Arsenal have two big problems - mentality and defending set-pieces.

So, what we'd need to buy is some winners and a big commanding centre half.

Oh yeah, and to either keep our good players, or properly replace them.

djourou dsnt have the strengh to play in the PL, way many times he way beaten in the air by smaller players.

a shawx would be cool actually, without being too agressive and go for huth, otherwise the whole team will be injured in training

Yeah true enough I suppose. I'm not keen on Cahill, Scott Dann does look competent though.

Jonathan Woodgate! On a pay as you play deal obviously. Supremely talented defender, he has just (like Hargreaves) suffered horrific luck with injuries. I think he has a season left in him.

Agreed on his talent, I've always said, when fit he's the best English CB even more so than Terry Rio etc actually him and King probably are but what a pair of crocks! On a pay as u play isn't a bad idea but u still need another CB tho.

great idea, maybe wenger should sign both, hargreaves and woodgate, and them complain all season long about his luck with injuries.

its way better than arguments like the weather, the pitch, the referee or the astrological signs

Djourou looked excellent this season before he picked up that shoulder injury at United. When he came back he was terrible.

He's certainly a good squad player, but I think we could do better.

No fraid not. I guess I trust the Scout's judgement when it comes to this sort of thang.

My favourite is lining teams up at the top of the ticker and comparing rotations. Very handy for finding your five defenders which of course have to come from 5 different clubs.

Hey guys which goalie do u recon will be the best 4.0 goalie? And rotates with Hart on City's hard matches? Thinking:

    Hart cheapie
    Baines Cole Hangeland cheapie cheapie
    Lampard Taaraabt Nzogbia Ohara Albrighton
    RVP Bent Zamora

Possible changes: No Taarabt/Nzogbia if they leave
Tevez instead of Bent or Zamora if he stays

The only 4.0 goalies are likely to come from the promoted teams. QPR kept a lot of cleenies last year particularly at home. Try that one.

I was looking at Swansea myself. Think they only conceded a dozen or so goals at home last season? They also rotate quite well with MCY for a while at least.

mm seems like the way to go...id rather have the Hart then Kompany personally and you do need some Man City defensive coverage...I just cant see Swansea being too solid against PL defenses tbh..not that i recon QPR will do amazingly better haha..itd be good to just get a goalkeeper combo you never have to tinker with not to waste transfers 🙂

I understand your reservations, but imo, if ya pay 6 - 6.5 million on Hart, you play him nearly every game anyway. It would only be on rare occasions when you play your back-up. If you're set on rotating every single week, you're better off with a couple of cheapies.

Even without the game starting, and prices not coming out, there seems to be a little trend in most peoples RMT that I've seen...

      Hart/De Gea/cheapie
      Cole/Baines
      Lampard/N'Zogbia/Sinclair/Taarabt/O'Hara
      RVP/Bent

Most seem to include atleast 8/9 of them 12 players.

yep but we can always make educated guessed on player prices
based on past years...first season i can remember where theres only gonna be one big hitter in midfield for most ppls teams 🙂 For me it was always Lampard after Ronaldo left..dont know how anyone can discount him..even at a ridiculous price the most consistent mid ever - and we all know if he's fit he wont be rested no matter who chelsea buy!

i have ab idea of who im going to pick and RVP is thinly definite in my team out of that lot with Taarabt or/and Sinclair also likely depending on price but I have my team planned completely different and I wouldn't agree that most people will pick 8/9 of them maybe 4/5. I expect Baines and Cole to start off around £8.0m, Hart and De Gea around £6.5m . I personally prefer to try get a few good cheap defenders along with a cheap goalkeeper and then have a fantastic midfield and forward line.Suarez and RVP are almost certs for me as is Van deer Vaart but with Young,Nani,Valencia and Park now at United i would think there will be a lot of rotation same with Man. City players but i'm thinking of gambling on 1 or 2 like Ireland and Torres hopefully after terrible seasons they will drop 1 or 2 mil

yep, Young, Valencia, Nani and Hernandez all seem to be rotation risks now.

          -Valencia-Rooney-Nani/Young-
          --------Hernandez-----------

Would be my guess, but fergie could easily push Rooney up and play Young behind him.

He would be brilliant for the Aussie league. It would make me want to watch a match, and I guess that's what it's all about.

Such a shame that injuries got the better of him here, one of my favourite players when he signed for us and I was delighted. Top quality player on his day.

I might do the Champs League as I've never done it before and it should be fun. Do they do a idkts? 😉

Is the Mail dodgy? I thought it was just grim. I didn't know it was dodgy in the Murdoch sense.

It's actually worse than NoW in the dodgy stakes - we have only exposed the tip of the iceberg, as far as this country's "free press" is concerned ...

Yes, the Daily Mail is dodgy in news-gathering practices. Labour MP Chris Bryant called it the "worst practitioner in the dark arts".

And it was the Mail, not the NOTW or any other NI publication, which most often hired the private investigator Steve Whittamore to obtain confidential information. See:

The trouble is with me not reading any of the drivel press,I don't take it in on a regular basis.

I might stick with doing their FF in the hope of taking some of their money.

Toying with the ticker today, it struck me that I might need a Norwich defender for the opening burst.

    Any suggestions? 😕

Apart from hairy palms, I think you should rather be looking at a QPR defender like Gorkss ...

Gorkss fo shizzle. I wouldn't get a norwich defender even if they had 38 home games vs blackburn

    Morning all.

I actually dreamt FPL opened this morning. Imagine my disappointment when I went online to find Steven Fletcher still adorning the home page ğŸ™
