While most other Premier League clubs’ transfer targets are still the subject of idle tabloid speculation, Sunderland have wasted little time in restructuring their squad. Steve Bruce has completed nine deals in total during the close season, with this week’s double capture of Wes Brown and John O’Shea from his old club Manchester United the real headline-grabber thus far.

Sunderland’s defence proved a real source of frustration last season; the Black Cats picked up five clean sheets in seven games from the start of December (including a 3-0 win at Chelsea) and prompted plenty Fantasy investment, but their run-in saw the side subsequently record just another two clean sheets in the last sixteen fixtures. With enough points on the board early on ensuring relegation was never an issue, Bruce’s side seemed to switch off in the second half of the season and the capture of Brown and O’Shea will address this perceived mental fragility at the back.

The pair sign up on Wearside on undisclosed, four-year deals and the Sunderland boss, speaking after confirmation of both transfers, was clearly delighted:

“The one thing when I spoke to them repeatedly was how much they wanted to play, everything was positive. I think it sent out a little statement, if you like. It’s okay getting young boys from Man United, but to get two of them who’ve got nearly 850 appearances between them, I think it was a fair coup for us. They’ve both got a very, very good attitude as well.”

The Statistics

John O’Shea
The Irishman signed for Man United as a 17 year old from local club Waterford Bohemians. O’Shea made his debut in 1999 before heading off on loan to Bournemouth and Royal Antwerp, where he played a total of 25 games, scoring 1 goal.

Establishing himself in the United first-team in 2002-03, he played 30+ league games in four of the next five seasons but, as time has progressed, O’Shea’s role was more of a versatile squad member, capable of filling in when injury sidelined Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-choice options.

He’s subsequently made 30+ appearances in just one of the last four league campaigns, though with 32 appearances for United in all competitions last season, it’s clear he still had a role to play at Old Trafford. With both Da Silva twins, Rafael and Fabio, establishing themselves in Sir Alex’s thinking, O’Shea’s future game time was only going to diminish and the guarantee of first-team football on Wearside seems to have clinched the deal.

In total, the 30 year-old made 256 league appearances for United, scoring 10 goals, and has represented the Republic of Ireland on 70 occasions, scoring once.

Wes Brown
Brown was something of a prodigious talent; joining United’s football academy aged 12, he excelled as part of their youth side and signed full professional terms at the age of 17. Sir Alex was a huge fan early on, describing the player as “Without question, the best natural defender this club has had for years”.

In spite of such praise, Brown made 30+ league appearances in just one of his thirteen seasons at United, as a series of injuries blighted his Old Trafford career. With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at the heart of defence and Gary Neville at right-back, Brown slipped further behind in the pecking order as younger reinforcements were introduced to the squad.

Brown’s opportunities have lessened as the seasons have gone by, with just 33 league appearances in the last three seasons a reflection of his standing within the first-team squad. Ferguson’s emphasis on buying up defensive potential brought Chris Smalling to the club last season and with the ex-Fulham man performing admirably in his debut season, Brown’s chances were further limited. The arrival of Phil Jones from Blackburn last month only emphasised the need for the 31 year old Brown’s departure and, providing he stays injury-free, a move to Sunderland will give his career a new lease of life.

In total, Brown played 232 league games for United, scoring 3 goals. He played 23 times for England, scoring once, before retiring from international football last year.

The Prospects

Bruce’s drastic overhaul of the Sunderland squad looks set to give the side an entirely new look next season and their ability to gel quickly will be crucial. The top-level experience both Brown and O’Shea bring to the Black Cats should bolster the back-four considerably and the pair’s versatility in defence gives Bruce plenty options.

O’Shea, in particular, looks a nailed-on starter, with right-back the more likely starting berth. Phil Bardsley played 29 times at left-back last season and seems to have made the position his own, though he may find himself sidelined by the new arrivals. Brown could also fill the right-back role, with O’Shea moving left and Bardsley on the bench.

Sunderland’s multitude of central defensive options means that, alternatively, Brown could partner any one of Titus Bramble, Anton Ferdinand, John Mensah or Michael Turner in the heart of the back-four. Bruce has recently claimed he is happy with the balance of the squad but one or maybe two of his centre-halves will surely be moved on before the end of August. Pre-season line-ups will go a long way to revealing just how Sunderland’s first XI will evolve next season.

In terms of chalking up clean sheets, Sunderland recorded 13 last season, up from 7 in the 2009/10 campaign. Their total was just 1 less than Liverpool and only 2 behind Man United and Chelsea; the Fantasy potential is clearly there and if a streak of consistency can be found, their defensive options could definitely be worth considering. A Fantasy Premier League (FPL) starting price of around 5.0 should be expected for both O’Shea and Brown.

Fabregas and Nasri are supposed to be Arsenal's "big" players ... however, the one thing neither was able to provide was ... "bigness" ... in any fashion whatsoever. In my opinion it's time to see these players for what they are - very talented, but useless when it comes to team building. In Fabregas' case, he is very nearly as poisonous as Gerrard, imo.

Respectfully disagree- at last as far as cesc. Arsenal not being a strong "team" has a lot more to do with the general atmosphere of the club and the vicious circle of continually falling short in big competitions.

But ... they do that because their players palpably lack character ... and not for any other reason whatever!

A lot of people find it difficult to criticise favourite players - I know I do - but here the proof is tangible ...

Yes - I can. The three players directly responsible are those two plus Vemaelen. Van Persie is mostly, though not wholly exonerated because firstly, when he was injured, appeared to keep an interest, and secondly found his form very rapidly. That is what I mean by character. Fabregas never lost an opportunity to complain or otherwise behave badly, and by the end of the season Nasri was going the same way.

Sczczesny is interesting, and may have what it takes - the jury is now out.

I kind of see where you're coming from with Fabregas and Nasri (although I don't think it's the case), but what exactly has Vermaelen done wrong?

He started 5 games all season, and the season before, Arsenal were very much in the title race until his injury.

It's not that he's gone wrong - it's just that he's not involved. Compare and contrast with Rio ...

And that's why I said that he is very, very important ...

Finally - although Arsene is not my favourite - his blind eye drives me mad - I have huge respect for him, what he's achieved, and the way he does it - and so I tend to think in the end, if he's made a mistake, it was in trusting Fabregas ...

so you're saying Vermaelen should be more active on twitter?

None of us know how much influence Vermaelen has in the Arsenal dressing room when he's injured or fit, because none of us are there.

We know Ferdinand is because he's in our faces all the bloody time trying to sell us something - be it restaurants, rap music, crap gangster films, or T-Shirts with stupid slogans on them.

Fabregas almost single-handedly dragged arsenal to a trophy two seasons ago- I really think it's harsh to say he's behaved badly. A player of his calibre should be winning trophies and it's entirely reasonable for him to be frustrated that he isn't, as I'm sure many other arsenal players are.

disagree. thinks captains are largely a myth. imo you lead with performance and in fabregas' case it's never detrimental to the cause. i never see any of the gerrard snarky bitch-face when a team mate dares to mis-place a pass with fabregas. plus his style of play isn't the kind where he can dominate as the expense of the team. he's all about his passing, it's not like gerrard trying to be everywhere and do everything, roy of the rovers style take every shot, every corner, every free kick, every penalty etc.
using barcelona as the benchmark who are their leaders? puyol by reputation maybe but they all 'lead' by performance. by being a leader you're suggesting your bigger than someone else in some way. don't think fabregas is like that in any way, he always wants the best for the team and his style of play is all abut interaction.
winning mentality is possibly a different matter and i'd probably agree with you there MMW but basically i think you lead with performance and it's hard to argue fabregas is anything other than a great asset in that respect imo.

              nope.
what came first the chicken or the egg?
were arsenal's invincibles winners because they were a team full of leaders or was it their success that made them leaders?
i'd argue the latter. wenger assembled such a perfect blend in that team, as well of some very talented players of course, that they were perfectly set up for winning and by being unbeaten it made them look like a team of leaders.
combative players look more like leaders (vieira, keane, terry) because of their style and maybe they do inspire through that combative die for the cause approach but again using barcelona as the benchmark do any of busquets-xavi-iniesta-messi-pedro-villa seem like leaders?
imo wenger's 'crime' this time is not being able to assemble that perfect blend of players like he did in 2004. not because it lacks leaders but because playing wise it just isn't quite the perfect blend of styles that can be more than the some of its parts. that's a reason for example that i think he shouldn't lose patience with walcott as he brings something different for them. also players like rvp and fabregas imo are 'style jokers™©', they can be played in any side, due to their ability they'll fit in.

I believe that the 2004 lot had four, maybe five "big men" - plus their captain, and I think Wenger's difficulties stem from the fact that although he has found equal, indeed possibly greater talents to replace them, those talents are mostly pigmies when it comes to character ...

This is a very fair point. With the exception of Van Persie, we don't really have those big characters at the moment.

Wilshere seems to fancy himself as one of those too, but the jury is still very much out.

there is a bit of that but he seemed to grow into the season and picked up a few double figure scores near the end.
pros: majority of attacking play filters through him
without tevez he dominates the baps, an assist usually becomes 8-9 points, a goal and he's up to 10-11.
cons: only once did he get multiple attacking points in a game (more than 1 assist or 1 goal in a match).
champions league this year may threaten his place as one of mancini's 'unrestables'

probably rearranging the data and updating the code of the site to it is ready for next season. they would have already updated the code with new rules and features if there are any but now just need to finalize code so it will be ready for creating new teams and registering for new players.

One of the guys from the telegraph site did a webchat a week or so ago and said the same thing.

However, he also said Arsenal are in no mood to sell to another Premier League team.

I suppose it all depends on where Nasri wants to go from there. If he flat-out refuses to go abroad or sign a new deal, Arsenal are going to have to sell.

Genuinely raging at that Modric interview...

    1) Talking about rival teams being interested in you as flattering is not a good move

    2) Why sign a contract if you don't agree with it

    3) Selling him to Chelsea for 22M is not "best for all concerned"

Hopefully he sorts himself out ala Rooney or we can ship him out for 30M+... ideally to a non-PL team.

It reminds me of the Ronaldo saga. But during that Gill + SAF always kept ronaldo sweet with promises and encouragement that he would eventually be able to go to Madrid. Levy has just thrown the toys out of the pram, stamped his feet and threatened Modric with the reserves of worse. Lunacy to turn the player against him. Bottom line is, if a player wants to go that badly, he will eventually.

It doesn't help that we haven't made any new signings to change Modric's mind (which is indeed Levy's fault if we have genuinely had offers for Palacios, Kranjcar, Hutton and Keane as that could easily have paid for a striker).

However, when it comes to Modric I disagree. Levy is playing that one pretty damn well. He's got 5 years left we us having been bought three years ago for 16.5M.

22M to a rival club is in no way at all a good deal for us considering that Modric has a lot of football left in him. If Chelsea really want him they'd better get that chequebook out as unlike Nasri we are in no rush to sell.

all dependant on prices of course, but I expect collins to be around 5mil. Think villa will do ok and he has a few goals in him. And he should start every game. Would prefer Hangaland but he could be 6mil.

Just looking at some GK rotation pairings, about 5 or 6 teams don't have a clear No.1, if Given goes to Villa, I'd settle for him & the Norwich keeper; first 8 fixtures look great.

Fixtures are good, but you have to play away every second week iirc? (been a few weeks since I looked at GK combos). That takes away one big advantage of rotating keepers - being able to have a home GK the majority of GWs. IMO, of course.

Watford have been after a left back for the past 6 months, and it's still quoted as a priority by manager and owner. If that happens, Doyley may not be as 'nailed on' as you think (although he could move over to rb). Just don't expect goals / assists from 'Lloydinho'! And unless we change from last year, clean sheets aren't exactly that common either....

+1. Can't see Ireland fitting in with McLeish too much either - he just doesn't work hard enough to fit into a McLeish midfield in any capacity.

A Villa defender seems like a good punt though - or maybe a goalkeeper if the right player comes up at the right price.

Nothing concrete gargamel, but the amount of italian and English press speculation surrounding the potential move combined with sneijder's vague comments about wanting to play in the PL all combine to make a reasonably convincing case.

Go to the FPL home page, stare deep into your monitor and say to it "I want to start picking my FPL team."

i think i must of changed my team 250 times so really apart from messing around and learning players values off the top of head and sort mini leagues out there is no need to look at the ff website till end of july.

Any guesses at what Lampard's price will be this year? If it's 13m again I'll go with Torres instead.
I think the goals will flow for Chelsea under Villas Boas. They have a relatively easy set of opening fixtures and I reckon Lamps is the only of their attacking players that is guaranteed to play 90 mins but am thinking of gambling on Torres regaining his form.

11.5 is my bet. 3 years ago after he had injury plagued season he started 11m.

India need 179 to win, and are 16 for 1. I am not sure how many overs there are left ....

Did I hear you saying you're doing Texaco Championship FF? How's the team? Just made mine, I generally do but always lose interest.

I have had the mother and father of all difficulties with the site - but yes, I've done a workaround:

        0D Forde
        0A Dawson
        0L Chambers
        0A Gerrard
        0I Harte
        0J Bullard
        0P Whittingham (C)
        0J Coppinger
        0G McSheffrey
        0S Long
        0B Pitman

It's a poor site, poor layout, and poor scoring rules.

You will lose interest by October, trust me. Although it might be easier as a West Ham fan considering your club is in the league.

It is shocking, I was in a league with my college mates last year and I just looked at it like once a month to see who was winning etc.

Then if there was any players in my team who were injured or simply just doing nothing every week I would change them.

Am I the only one looking forward to RMTs? Then again it is my first pre season!

I don't mind them per sé, but I'd prefer if a) people read some of the others so as not to be repeating the same squads over and over, and b) people didn't just list 15 players and say "RMT" - would be nice to open a little discussion by saying WHY they've selected player x, y and z etc etc.

Each to their own Tommy but I really don't like them. I much prefer someone posting who their next transfer or two is going to be and why. Some of those posts can give you a different perspective and open up some interesting debate on here.
