Pre-Season

The pre-season has shifted into gear over the past 48-hours as some of the Premier League’s top sides begun their preparatory campaigns. Showpiece matches could be found across the globe with venues ranging from the shores of Malaysia, the United States of America and a barren training ground pitch in Cobham.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool played in Asia yesterday with youngsters Aaron Ramsey and Andy Carroll putting in the first eye-catching performances of the summer. Meanwhile, over the Atlantic, Man United started their stateside tour against New England Revolution and came out on top thanks to the intervention of their bench-warming strike duo – Michael Owen and Federico Macheda.

West Brom are also in the US and their defensive fragility was on show again as they fell foul of an audacious 90 yard goal in a 2-1 defeat to San Jose Eathquakes – Jerome Thomas fetching the Baggies goal.

Chelsea continue their relentless pursuit of the Luka Modric but playmaker Yossi Benayoun issued a timely reminder of his flair and talent, impressing in a behind closed doors friendly with a sumptuous double-flick lob as the Blue saw off Wycombe by a 3-0 margin. Sunderland and Fulham also had fixtures this last week and Cottagers are in action again tonight as they take on Crusaders in their UEFA Europa League second round qualification tie.

A reminder that full details of all these games can be found in our Pre-Season Form Guide linked at the top of your page as we track the form of players and teams going into the big kick-off.

I liking Westwood in goal this season, partly thanks to Brown/O'Shea buys. Solid at home for two-thirds of 2010/11, but would have to consider Given if he seals Villa switch.

Given if at Villa and Green or Foster at WBA should be good in FPL, In Metro you can have anyone you like goalies are silly cheap.

Not convinced by combo-ing keeper pos. Might work well with two decent players, but I tend to go dirt cheap on sub, and often the better keeper still out scores. Odd goal kills you when you're banking on a CS, and sometimes games against tougher oppo are tighter than you might have expected. I hate it when I switch and the CS ends up going against my micro-managing.

'Blink and you've missed it,' or wished you had.

Big issue for me this season is investment spread over Def and Mid. I've tended to go long Mid, short Def, but may juggle this season. Not sure yet, price/value dependent, but Mids looking a real minefield 2011/12.

      Goalkeepers 9 - 9.5

Defense - one expensive, one middle, 2 rotating x 4.5 or 4.0 and the last bench folder 4.0

Midfielders - One expensive captain choice, one less expensive around 9, 2 bargain middle price mids and one 4.5 bench folder

FOrwards - 2 expensive captain choice and one budget striker

That is how is done boys and girsl

        Agree with this approach.
With this structure, while at early stage of a season IMO provides the greatest flexibility.
The transfer you would proceed are narrowed to 4 expensive players only, as you adapt with form establish along the early stage you could shift the funds to any sections easily.

Here is my own shortlist, did I miss anyone worth considering?

        Goalkeepers
Given and 4.0, Reina and 4.0, Szezsny and 4.0, Krul and Mignolet,

        Defense
1 expensive - Ashley Cole, Baines, G Johnson, Vidic, Kompany
1 midrange - Jagielka, Dawson, Hangeland, O'shea, M Kelly, Gibbs, Dunne
2 rotating - WBA, Fulham, QPR, Newcastle, Bburn, Wolves, Bolton
1 bench folder - Swansea, Norwich, Wigan

        Midfielders
1 expensive captain - Gerrard, Lampard, VDV, Fabregas
1 upper middle - Ashley Young, Arteta, Malouda, Downing, Walcott, Ramsey, Silva
2 bargain mids - Albrighton, Sessegnon, O'hara, Etherington, Taarabt, Brunt, Nzogbia, Barton, Osman
1 bench folder - Gardner, Hoolahan, Watson,

        Forwards
2 expensive captain - RVP, Rooney, Torres, Carroll, Bent, Suarez, Balotelli
1 budget striker - Demba Ba, Beckford, Odemwingie, Hoilett

Yup, my guess is at 6.0 - 6.5 bracket. But his first 2 fixtures isnt good, can reassess afterward.
Personally, I'm excited about Demba Ba, nailed on for the bargain spot for me..

Yep, I think you're right on Ba, I think Odem could easily be 7.5-8.

I always make sure my second goalie plays all the time as well. I hate any non-players on my bench.

Ba could be a good option and Odem for me is good value, although he could be 6.5-7.0. I do think prices could be higher than we had anticipated so we may have to look for bargains.

Heard Swansea had the best home defensive record across all divisions in England last season, if that stat interests anyone...

Not sure on the accuracy of it, heard a commentator mention it at some stage, correct me if I'm wrong

Also I think their games alternate well with Man City early in the season, so a SWA MCY starting keeper combo could work out well, depending if they can keep that form at the top level of course

That sums up my achilles heel - not willing to get the "in form" players(hoping that their bandwagons come to a schreeching halt)...just to save a 4 pt hit.

Odemwingythingy comes to mind last season. Drogba, early in the season 2009/10.

What I'd like is a 6 mill defender hailing from a team that does cleenies and earns himself bps, abps, dbps, assists and goals.

I think the nearest such player is Dawson. TOT kept quite a few cleenies when he returned from injury. Should be 5.5 - 6.

            Hangeland isn't quite productive enough.

An in-form Vermaelen fits the bill but might be 7 mill +

Onuoha is back at City! The only way I see Bardsley not starting is if Bruce decides to play O'Shea at left back and Brown at right back. That'd leave Titus and Turner as centre-backs, completing a goddamn snail-like slow backline.

Yeah, they'll definitely play, just not sure how many points are in them. There's always something that puts me off Steve Bruce teams, forever mediocre and unpredictable but rarely thrash anyone. Here's a theory about the best way to plan out your opening week team, according to the fixtures.

You don't want to get a team all of whom have, for example, 6 weeks of good fixtures at the start of the season, because then your entire team will run out of good fixtures simultaneously and you'll be forced into playing your wildcard.

You want to stagger when the different parts of your team run out of fixtures, so you can gradually replace them and keep your wildcard for later in the season. And you probably want a faster turnaround on the players more likely to score points, so you can get the firing big-hitters right from the start. So here's the plan:

Goalkeepers: Get the best rotating pair until January.
Defenders: Plan the best team for 10-12 weeks.
Cheap Mid/Fwds: Best team for 6-8 weeks.
    £ Mid/Fwds: Best for 3-4 weeks.

Therefore you can get the big scoring players right from the start, and then gradually work through the rest of your team, back to sorting out the defence 10 or 12 weeks into the season.

    What do people think?

Same here. Luckily i had Foster from the start last season so I just ended up playing him week in week out since Jussi was useless.

It does stress me out a bit though for this season as I can't make up my mind who to go for. The fact that Villa have not signed a keeper is not making it any easier.

I still don't believe in the "good fixtures" ethic. If there's anything last season taught us it's to expect the unexpected, you never know which minnow team may slay a giant - easy for a team like Norwich to get fired up to play Man City but do their international superstars feel the same way about playing Norwich?

Sometimes it's a little thinking outside the box (so to speak) that might give you an edge over your competition.

By that notion you could also argue that the "unexpected" could following the "good fixtures" schedule...You clearly don't expect that theory to work so maybe it will this time...

Certainly good fixtures are no garuntee of anything.

But even last year, the most competitive league season in recent memory with all of the promoted teams giving it a good go, isn't it true that most of players scored more points, for example, in home games than away? And isn't it also true that most players scored more points in their games against the eventual bottom five then they did against the top 5?

I haven't run the numbers, but that is my impression. So why wouldn't you take it into account when picking a team? Backing cheaper players, in particular, to do well against the big sides is silly.

I agree - only position where you might get away with "murder" is at keeper where you might get someone saving a peno or doing a high amount of saves.

No way im backing a Norwich defender at ManU.

It's not that a good run of fixtures isn't a good reason to pick certain players, but I seem to remember many times last season getting caught out by that, double gameweeks too. My main point is that it shouldn't always be the overwhelming factor in choosing a player, I've seen friends take 4 point hits shuffling players about due to an "easy game" and it backfire often.

Dude...I totally accept you point of view but I was just playing on your theory of the unexpected. Last season was my second in this game and I had my plans set after season 1. Yet budget didn't allow for that team and I had to scramble to get a squad worth competing. This season could be the same with budgets adjusting and would therefore require a bit of fixture analysis and guess-work to eventually build the team budget so that one could have a squad that doesn't necessarily include the proposed bottom of the table teams. Budget is the key here and will affect your team...and this is why I believe the "good fixtures" idea works (in the initial stages at least).

Yeah, the thing is that everyone will be looking at the same fixtures and having similar ideas - if all goes to plan then great but sometimes you need a differential, it may backfire or pay off but that's the gamble you take I guess!

Pre-season form has always let me down as well, I often pick players based on the 6 goals they've scored pre-season only for them to go to sleep for the first 3 months of the season.

Sounds good in theory. Did you put into practice last season?

Although planning is really important, I don't see the point of doing so more than, say, 5 games in advance. It usually ends up a waste of time (an enjoyable waste of time, but a waste nonetheless).

My theory (it works for me at least) is to pick the best team you possibly can from the off. If you can get into the top 1000 early doors, play your wildcard early with the aim of consolidating your position.

You will find a lot of similarities between the teams around you, and only taking unnecessary risks will cause you to drop significantly. The flip-side is that it's very difficult to climb the rankings as well, unless you catch Berba (c) in hatrick mode or Dempsey tearing it up in a double game week.

Just for once I would like to get a good start. I always seem to get off to a cr*p start.

Playing catch up is never nice. Nevertheless if it wasnit for a moment of madness in gw34 I would have had a top 1k finish porbably.

So not all is lost after a bad start, catching up is possible.

It's possible but difficult to catchup after a bad opening to the season. I didn't start with Drogba and Malouda and got kicked in the nads early on.

I had a go with it from my first wildcard, which was gameweek 23, and if you look at my history it was something of a turning point in terms of climbing the rankings. This may be coincidence though, as lots of FFS users climb the rankings in the latter stages of the season.

Well played. I had a horrible last 10 GW or so, taking hits trying to chase down a lead. The lead just got bigger ðŸ™

Odemwingie killed me. I couldn't believe the run he had (against really tough opposition at the start to boot). My main rival had him throughout and I didn't get him in.

Jafs - you settled on a keeper combo yet? My problem is I'm to scared to double up in defence(ala Tosey).

In other words I tend to pick let's say Alhabsi as part of a keeper combo some save points instead of figeroa as i beleive wigan are crap in defence. Ditto with Jussi from Bolton.

I end up picking keepers from teams that i don't want defenders from, and then i look at say ful/BB/Sun/stoke for defensive cover.

I think this could be my downfall again this season.

The Tosey Defence Strategy relies heavily on luck. With only 161 cleenies about last season, it would have been more miss than hit imo.

Combo? Not sure. QPR/SWN looked good but De Vries going has cast a shadow. Good first nine weeks for rotation though.

Could do with seeing prices first.

Some of the best-rotating combos are very expensive this year; I can't see us getting keepers like Foster and Robinson last year, who were such clear good options even though they were priced at 4.5m.

Stoke and Villa, for example, a rotation pattern which has been suggested by many, could end up costing you around £10.5m for the pair. Well, if you're spending that, then why the hell wouldn't you just get Hart/De Gea for their probable price of 6.5 and 4.0, spend the same amount of money and

It's secure, you're pretty much garunteed a decent points return, unless Hart/De Gea gets injured, and you won't be spending any more money, unless one of the lesser options is seriously under-priced.

It's tough to get your funds back out when they're piled onto one player like that, because if you transfer him down then you may end up having to play the Swansea keeper semi-regularly, which would be a disaster.

Thing is though, returns from keepers are the lowest in the game.

I wouldn't want to spend more than 9 mill max on gks. That extra 1-1.5 comes in handy with other positions who offer better returns.

I haven't worked out the full season tab, but there is a tab for each club at the bottom. I think each sheet then looks at possible rotations for each team and which team's keeper you would play in each week e.g. on SUN's tab they rotate perfectly with NEW but looking at the bottom, their worst rotation is with SWA where both keepers are away 17 times e.g. weeks 1, 6, etc etc

I think he was asking for silly money to join. Is on mega bucks at West Ham not Stoke don't pay silly wages.

I'd say that rules him out of QPR too and, frankly, I'd rather have DJmyself.

Think DJ hungrier and Cole probably will just want to take the money and do naff all on the pitch like last season.

    BRITISH OPEN BETS

WEATHER FORECAST – looks blustery on Thursday morning calming down into the afternoon and staying calm through to the following afternoon.
    …….so we need……
Late starter on thursday and a nice early start Friday……

FORM – The usual suspects, who the ill informed will be lumping on are on form LUKE DONALD, LEE WESTWOOD, RORY McILLROY et al are all on top form BUT have the massive weight of expectations on their shoulders and recent history has not been kind to British golfers……lets dig a little deeper………AND DON’T BE SCARED TO BACK A ROOKIE!

LINKS FORM……links golf is a very different animal, hard bouncy fairways, unpredictable, the open has very often thrown up some, what seems on the surface unusual winners……but lets dig a little deeper……..
2005 TODD HAMILTON – lives in one of the windiest hardest driest places in the U.S. Westlake, Texas
2009 STUART CINK – great track record on links golf courses – winning the Mexican open twice – played on the hard dry bouncy courses.
2010 Louis Oosterhuisen – Got the absolute perfect weather conditions on the first 2 days and the weather stayed good over the weekend and protected his lead easily – used to played in the hard South African conditions
2003 Ben Curtis – ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ON THE U.S. TOUR 2003……….
    – you need to find someone with good tee times, good track record on the hard bouncy fairways, hasn’t got too much burden of pressure, I have researhed further into this (but don’t want to bore you with the details!!)

SO…..THE EACH WAY SHORT LIST…..AND PRICES

    LUCAS GLOVER – 250/1
    HARRISON FRAZAR – 400/1
