Pre-Season

The pre-season has shifted into gear over the past 48-hours as some of the Premier League’s top sides begun their preparatory campaigns. Showpiece matches could be found across the globe with venues ranging from the shores of Malaysia, the United States of America and a barren training ground pitch in Cobham.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool played in Asia yesterday with youngsters Aaron Ramsey and Andy Carroll putting in the first eye-catching performances of the summer. Meanwhile, over the Atlantic, Man United started their stateside tour against New England Revolution and came out on top thanks to the intervention of their bench-warming strike duo – Michael Owen and Federico Macheda.

West Brom are also in the US and their defensive fragility was on show again as they fell foul of an audacious 90 yard goal in a 2-1 defeat to San Jose Eathquakes – Jerome Thomas fetching the Baggies goal.

Chelsea continue their relentless pursuit of the Luka Modric but playmaker Yossi Benayoun issued a timely reminder of his flair and talent, impressing in a behind closed doors friendly with a sumptuous double-flick lob as the Blue saw off Wycombe by a 3-0 margin. Sunderland and Fulham also had fixtures this last week and Cottagers are in action again tonight as they take on Crusaders in their UEFA Europa League second round qualification tie.

A reminder that full details of all these games can be found in our Pre-Season Form Guide linked at the top of your page as we track the form of players and teams going into the big kick-off.

Best expensive defender choice this year...

    Baines or Vidic or Cole?

Even if Kompany and the three I mentioned are the same (or similar price? I was leaning towards Baines as he is almost like another midfielder although the prospects of Ashley Young's excellent set pieces is making Vidic look more tempting

I seem to be getting into price disputes every five minutes these days, but I can't see Kompany being within 0.5 of Baine's price.

If any admins are on here...I have a suggestion.

One of my fears with the expected surge in traffic on this site is the loss of a sensible forum, with it being swamped by numpties asking to rate their team or what transfer to make, etc.

So, why not introduce a Members Only forum?

Keep the existing fora linked to each article but have a separate forum which only members can access. This would ensure a high quality of discussion on there, as only serious players will pay for membership.

    Any thoughts on this solution?

Don't think a members only forum is a good idea tbh, but Mark has made some comments about filtering out RMT's to their own area (sort of) and that can't come soon enough for me. As soon as FPL re-opens there'll be a month of constant RMT's and placing them some place else would be magic.

I know but there will be a ridiculous amount soon. Any sense on community or ability to have sensible FF discussion will be lost I fear.

The Man United forum Red Cafe has a slightly different but interesting approach. New members can only post on a "Newbie forum". They can view the main fora but can only start posting on it when they are promoted by moderators to a full member, based on the quality of their posts. A bit patronising but it seems to work.

That said, I think a Members Only forum would work better in this case. It would also maintain an advantage for paying members. N.B.I am not a member yet as I want to see how things pan out but something like this would push me over the edge.

I seriosuly doubt a members forum will emerge, at least in a plain straightforward format because its not really in the interests of the site from Mark et als perspective. However, if things became sufficiently bad something might emerge, or perhaps in another guise anyway.

A nursery forum (or newbie forum as you mentioned) is certainly a reasonable suggestion worthy of consideration.

I think that, if things are kept as they are, once the admins, memebrs, etc see what emerges then something will be done about it. I just hope that it isn't left until it is too late and the site loses its credibility.

The smart thing would be to put it in place now, before the problem happens.

I don't think a members only forum will be created, but I'm sure the Scouts are aware of the implications on the site's community spirit- in fact I know they are, as they've hinted as much. So something will be in place, we'll just have to see how that (whatever it is) goes.

Agreed, perhaps they have something in mind.

They're smart people so im sure it must have occurred to one of them that something might be required as a result of the almost inevitable increase in traffic.

I dont think a nursery area would be too difficult to implement either.

I'll probably start with Given if he goes to Villa ... I know some people don't like rotating GKs but have a look at this (Home games in Capitals):

          GW 1 - QPR v bolton
          GW 2 - VILLA v blackburn
          gw 3 - VILLA v wolves
          gw 4 - QPR v newcastle
          gw 5 - VILLA v newcastle
gw 6 - QPR v villa ( Take ur pick)
          gw 7 - VILLA v wigan
          gw 8 - QPR v blackburn
          gw 9 - VILLA v west brom

Rotating GKs doesn't guarantee clean sheets but FF is all about playing the percentages ... I think QPR and Villa keepers give you a good, cheapish option

i agree with the rotation but i dont like QPR's chances of cleanies

i started with bolton/wolves last year as they rotated perfectly but that went really badly

ill be rotating blackburn/stoke from gwk12 when i wildcard but until then ill probably just go with hart

I aggree with this. If you're going to rotate, you can't go for a 4.0 keeper (assuming that the FPL get hte prices roughly where we expect them).

Given and QPR keeper basically means play Given with the exception of the most difficult fixtures.

If Scezsney and Given both come in at 5.5, then there'll be a tough decision to be made, which may very well come down to which team has the best defence alternatives available.

If I was a Liverpool fan, I would have preferred NZog to Downing even if they were the same price. With Downing looking like being twice the price, it would have been a no-brainer for me. But, I guess KK knows better.

The only risk with NZog is his temperament but sometimes you have to take a risk for talents like that (e.g. Cantona!). Downing is nowhere near as talented IMO

Dalglish wants the right type of player, not just the best players. If you look at his signings each one of them will give 100% for the club and are good team players. Can you put N'Zogbia in that category?

    Hello

I've got little tv related question for you guys.
I'm looking to buy some dvd box for rainy days and heard lot of good things about The Wire.
Anyone seen it, is worth buying? I don't know how many seasons there is already...

My favourite shows are/were sopranos, shield, nypd blue, game of thrones etc.
Dislike shows like csi, ncis, mentalist etc.

So what do you think, is it for me?

The Wire is the best thing to ever appear on TV, in my opinion. For anyone who finds it too easy going(!) try The Corner, The Wire's gritty mini-series predecessor.

          Omar Little is my hero.

Hey JackBauer. Was thinking about our chat last night, and wondered whether you fancy a wager.

If Carroll is 8.5 or less you must change your name to "JackBauer - Jonah is the Ultimate FPL Master".

If he is 9.0 or more I will change to a name of your choosing.

Names last one week. Sound fun?

Not trying to butt in and speak on JB's behalf here, but...the debate from my side (and from what I can tell, JB's) wasn't that Carroll will or won't be 4.0 more expensive than he was last season, but just that there's no rule forbidding it from happening.

Haha, I like it Mr Jonah! However I wouldn't rule out 8.5 - that would actually be my guess. So how about 8.0 or below, you win. 9.0 or above and I win. 8.5 exactly and we'll call it a draw?

And if I win, I'm happy to go with your suggested name - with names reversed of course.
