Our next Fantasy game review examines an offering that many of us are already familiar with. Metro Fantasy Football was our chosen distraction from the Fantasy Premier League (FPL)- not only did we provide a weekly tips column but we also took it on as our “second game” for the 2010/11 season. The jury is still out on our selected Scout League games right now, but with improvements made throughout, it’s clear that the Metro game deserves plenty of consideration once again.

Once again Fantasy managers can register up to five different teams as they attempt to come top of the pile and claim £7,500 – half of last season’s grand prize, but still not to be sniffed at. Runners-up also get a handsome wedge of cash for their efforts (diminished again, of course) as well as a £1000 return for the ten Managers of the Month over the course of the season.

The Ruleset

The Metro hits us with some familiar rules, with the standard £100m budget to select a squad of 15 players in any of the expected regulation formations, with up to four players from each club allowed to pitch in.

Last season was a bit of a proving ground where some noticeable flaws and gaps were found as the game progressed – fortunately it looks like these have been recognised and addressed. Gameweeks are now already set out after causing confusion last season, while benched players can be automatically subbed on to replace injured and suspended players in the starting XI, much like the FPL – a huge improvement.

It’s the scoring system that provides the real intrigue and is make or break to this game’s appeal. Based on the FSB ruleset – Points are granted for goals, assists and clean sheets as expected, but this is supplemented by involving a whole number of player actions on the pitch based on Opta data.

The noticeable highlights here include 2 point returns for every tackle won, shot blocked, clearance or interception made, while at the other end of the field an effort on target garners 5 more points; every a pass in the final third will also add a single point to player tallies.

The captain’s armband offers double points which can be shifted each week as you see fit, while transfer allowances are unlimited – but at a cost. We get one free transfer a week (plus five bonus trades twice in the season around each transfer window) but can also make additional changes at a cost of 25 points.

In addition to the overall competition and private mini-leagues, the Metro also has a raft of side games for those who like to back their Fantasy selections – betting plays a major role here. Be it joining weekly cash games or playing the Five-a-Side and new Star Player sideshows. The latter is what you would expect – pick five players with the top scoring manager each gameweek claiming a £100 prize. Star Player is perhaps more intriguing, this simple betting format asks you to choose from two player options in opposition, staking £10 in the hope of a return. As an example, you can choose to bet your tenner on either Bobby Zamora or Darren Bent in the opening fixture at Craven Cottage – the Fulham striker offering £20 if he scores more points, Bent a return of £17.

These options may seem overwhelming for the regular Fantasy manager but act as decent distractions once your Fantasy lineup has crossed the white line on matchday.

Player List

The Metro appear to have given their player list plenty of thought this season – there appear to be few exploits on offer and pricing looks well balanced. That’s not to say there aren’t a few apparent bargains on offer from the start.

Keiren Westwood (£1.6m) and Dorus De Vries (£1.7m) look good options in goal should they cement starting roles at their new clubs. Westwood’s back four also looks cheap with Michael Turner (£3.8m), Wes Brown (£4.0m) and Titus Bramble (£3.9m) all available in the budget bracket. There are also some out of position options in defence – Blackburn’s Martin Olsson is a defender once again although Gareth Bale’s wing role is no longer exploitable – he’s classed as a midfielder this season.

He keeps the company of Stephane Sessegnon (£7.1m) and Jamie O’Hara (£7.2m) who both look strong options in the low-mid price bracket, while Junior Hoillett gets a midfield berth in this game too and will be well fancied. Wes Hoolahan (£6.8m) and Nathan Dyer (£6.9m) also look decent bench fodder options from the promoted sides.

Up front Danny Graham (£6.3m) looks equally appealing as a budget option, as does team-mate Scott Sinclair (£6.8m). Once again the likes of Demba Ba (£7.5m) and Bobby Zamora (£7.4m) look tempting in the mid-price bracket.

The Verdict

The Metro have clearly upped their game. The site and interface is slick and more manageable that last year’s effort and major wrinkles have been ironed out – most notably the introduction of auto substitutions. Obviously the prizes aren’t of the gargantuan stakes the Sun Dream Team puts on offer but are still factors when you consider that this is a wholly free to play game.

If you ignored the Metro game last season, you’ll find it a major departure from the FPL game with the Opta based scoring adding depth and variety to the normal goal/assist/clean sheet format. The casual player may find the points tallies more difficult to track however, making this a game that is perhaps more likely to appeal to a hardcore following looking to break away from the standard Fantasy football template.

I reckon Moyes will give Beckford more time now that he has settled a bit in the PL.

However the lack of transfers and transfer rumours involving Everton is now on the verge of sickening. A bit of ambition shown by Kenwright would be hughely welcome but sadly it's not going to happen. I won't blame Moyes if he opts to move on.

I'll eat my face if this happens. With the greatest respect to Rovers fans, He's on a different level. Also, the Russian league isn't halfway yet. It'd take a bid of around £18m to get things moving with this one. Especially seeing as CSKA are in for the title. He's been linked with Liverpool, Napoli and Arsenal. Awesome player, but said he prefers Italy or Spain.

Lots of panic and refreshing here it seems. 😉

Felt another David Beckham post was due - ah yes i enjoyed reading his links to the Hacking entourage.

"Reuters also points out that David Cameron received James Mudoch and his wife at Chequers on 7 November 2010, and once attended "a World Cup party given by Victoria and David Beckham for charity" as "guests of Rebekah Wade" (Wade was Brooks's maiden name)."

All together in one easy to dislike bunch. :). The For charity bit was comical.

Um, not too bad. We've had one insanely hot day here, but it's otherwise mostly rain, sun, rain, sun...

Some people up noth have been brewing vodka in lock-ups, and it set fire last night, think it killed some people.

And personally, I've just been playing and buying retro video games.

            Sounds fun. What games?

Ya insanely warm here last 2 weeks. Mid to high 30s, 24hr sun .

Ya friendly is a word. Pretty depressing country outside of Moscow/ St Peter. Abject poverty, unemployment , no state help, mass media propaganda on news networks showing Putin / Medevedev for at least 20min each evening and very cheap Alcohol and cigs to keep population sedated. (Litres of vodka less than euro, 20 packet less than euro. everywhere.

Seeing in summer compared to winter is like a world apart. But in saying that ive gone beyond Moscow and St peter this time. Some of the sights of seen this time will live long.

3rd world county would be a compliment unfortunately.

                Haha.
Gameboy, Brings back memories of Playing Jurassic park on it in the mid nineties.

Ya one of the most depressing was stopping at a road side diner to see a bus full of thin sick stricken looking kids from a summer camp eat food which looked mostly of human waste and some form of animal meat in a meshy soup. - never seen anything like it before. Poor kids.

Not the picture of Russia you see on Tv. Not much has changed in majority of the country since fall of communism. Merely a veil of description to see it as more "friendly " in world politics.

Went through countless villages/towns last week people living in shacks made of trees invested with rats and 90% unemployment. The winters are especially harsh you can imagine when the temp dips and the wolves and bears come looking for food

Sickening thing is none of this is shown to their own people who as i said are kept in total paralysis with the cheap alcohol and little hope of anything else. I kid you not of the main news last week the majority was Putin talking in Parliament, the terrible sinking of a boat and then the most random stories - there was a 10min segment of people giving out about rusty nails on building sites.

Well whatever politicians are in charge you'll still get the same socializing with the world's business elite, that's just how it is. This story is pretty much all you hear on the BBC at the minute but they have strong links with The Guardian, a rival newspaper to many of Murdoch's yet most people think they are the epitome of impartial.

Everyone has their own agenda but the public swallow it up and believe whatever scare story they're told, remember swine flu? Billions spent on Tamiflu and what, 30 people died - sad as that is 10 times plus died of regular flu in the same time period. Princess Diana dies and the country mourn, images of people crying in the streets - why? Did they know her personally? Most weren't even that keen on her until she died and the paper's changed their tune on the matter. Mass hysteria blows these things out of all proportion.

See Mark, this is what happens when the FPL site doesn't start up - people get ranty! 😀

Either they're testing the site, or I'm suffering from FPL refresh webpage madness...one thing's for sure, i'm very, very sad.

Most wanted new/transferred player for your fantasy team?

I like Young, but not sure how many points he will be getting with all that fire power and potentially another CAM (Sneijder?) on his way to MUFC.

Maybe Riise or O'Shea if they are nailed on starters, given their team's fixtures to start (how un-exciting).

Then again, all the nationals have been caught out completely by Fergie's 'don't want Sneijder' comments. The Mail was expecting a deal done today in yesterday's paper. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Also, I was watching Gabriel Marcotti on ESPN's daily news show yesterday evening and in an early edition he was pretty upbeat on Sneijder to Man Utd, yet after Fergie's comment aired, completely about-faced, arguing why deal was never on the cards. Duffus.

+1 - if the anxiety wasn't pumped up and up by fellow posters, everyone would be happy when the game launched next Monday (the 18th) - only about 5 business days after the game launched last year around the same time. Still a month to go until the season and tons of transfers to be made by clubs.

Have patience. I think the doors will open this Monday the 18th.

It depends whether the values will change if they transfer to another team before the game is released, but we'll never know that.

For example, new teams are only usually 4.5 - 5.5m, but transfers direct to big teams (e.g. Suarez) don't apply to that rule.

So Taraabt could end up being like 6.5 if he transfers somewhere before the game launches. For example.
