The speed at which a certain Mr Torres went from irreplaceable to โ€œFernando who?โ€ in the eyes of Liverpool fans can mainly be attributed to the displays of Luis Suarez. Arriving at Anfield just as El Niรฑo headed south to Chelsea on the final day of the January transfer window, Suarez wasted little time in establishing himself as an Anfield favourite with a series of scintillating performances in the second half of the season.

Coming off the subs bench for his debut at home to Stoke, Suarez grabbed a goal in a 28 minute cameo that, despite a lack of match-fitness, hinted at what was to come. After missing out on an away trip to Chelsea the following week, Suarez started the final twelve games of the season for Kenny Dalglishโ€™s side, missing only eight minutes of action from gameweek 27 till the end of the campaign.

A virtuoso display in Liverpoolโ€™s 3-1 home win over Man United in Gameweek 29 particularly caught the eye as Suraez tormented the eventual champions on his way to picking up 2 assists and 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points for a 10 point haul haul that saw him resultantly leap onto many a Fantasy Watchlist.

Whether he partnered Dirk Kuyt or Andy Carroll upfront, his menace to opposition defences saw the Uruguayan finish the season with 68 FPL points from thirteen appearances, averaging over five points per game as Liverpool just missed out on a place in the Europa League.

Key Factors

  • Suarezโ€™s game is clearly suited to scoring highly with the Bonus judges. A look at his stats in our Members Area illustrates just how influential he is for Liverpool and it reflects in the 14 Bonus points awarded over seven of his twelve starts. At home, in particular, Suarez stood out, picking up Bonus in five of his six Anfield starts.

  • Liverpoolโ€™s form under Kenny Dalglish gives definite cause for optimism. Prior to his January arrival, the clubโ€™s record under Roy Hodgson read (P20, W7, D4, L9 25pts) and, despite one point from his first two games in charge, Dalglish led the club to (P18, W10, D3, L5, 33pts) with a run of games from gameweek 24 to 36 that saw them win ten and draw two of their fourteen games. Under King Kenny, they beat Man City and Man United at home, while winning at Chelsea and drawing away to Arsenal.

  • Liverpool have a kind run of home games to start off the season (SUN, BOL, WOL, MUN, NOR, SWA) with only the Man United clash looking tricky on paper. Having won the corresponding fixture last season, Dalglishโ€™s men will hold no fear going into the game. Currently starring in Copa America 2011, Suarez may end up playing late into July but has moved to dismiss fears of burn-out, assuring Liverpool fans heโ€™ll be fit and ready for the new season.

  • With just half a Premier League season under his belt, it seems unlikely Suarez will be priced in the same bracket as more proven top-flight forwards such as Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and -despite the uncertainty over playing time- Chelsea pair Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres. While the above-mentioned quartet should come in around 11.0-12.0, Suarez looks more likely to be around the 10.0 mark and will, more than likely, not even be the highest priced player from Liverpool, with Steven Gerrard still leading the way there.

  • Liverpoolโ€™s sixth place finish last season may prove to be a blessing in disguise for their league aspirations this coming campaign. With no European football to clog up the fixture calendar, Dalglishโ€™s side can fully focus on the Premier League, meaning less possibility of rotation and more chance of his squad being fresher from one gameweek to the next, in comparison to their top-flight rivals.

Bale having a go at scoring from a free kick now, was just dipping under the bar before the keeper turned it over.

I know it's not EPL standard but these lot did win their league last year and at least Bale is running about as if Charlie Adam didn't try to break him ~2/3 months ago

my rival last year 'likes' sp*rs and especially bale

yeah didnt even have the balls to support a team properly (thought he was an arsenal supporter anyway) because apparently he 'didnt know enough about footy so just likes the exciting teams'

yeah well done sp*rs, jammy run in the champs league and your 'star' player just kicks the ball twenty yards and runs after it

dnt see what the fuss is about tbh, bale is a player that impresses posh rugby playing ****s who know **** all about footy

I really wouldn't say everyone loves us. Except maybe United and Chelsea as we manage to gift them points every time they play us pretty much.

As for Bale he's more than just running quick as he has got a decent cross and finish in him. He's certainly better at crossing than Lennon and more useful playing LM than Kranjcar or Pienaar

Would love to see the stats on bale assists, espiecally from a crossing position where he did put in a 'good' cross but the problem was he was way too far forward compared to team mates. So the cross looked great but was actually shite as you need to know where your players are!

Hmm, while I'm bored I wonder who has some good advice for me... Basically don't support any club, usually it's whoever Man U are playing because I hate seeing them have ref bias in nearly all their matches - how Rooney/Vidic weren't punished for half the things they did last season amazes me.

Anyway in my close group of mates everyone supports a different team so I was wondering who'd be a good shout for me to take on as my own to add a little spice to the season - I don't want a whipping boy team that'll lose to them all so that narrows the choices down. Teams excluded are:

    Man U
    Liverpool
    Arsenal
    Chelsea

Which I guess leaves me with Tottenham/Man C? (or any other good suggestions)

I was veering towards Tottenham being a southerner, and not liking Oasis or much else Mancunian, but then Tottenham don't seem to be progressing much in the transfer window while Man C still have a pretty strong squad for the upcoming season...

    Any thoughts?

(I wouldn't normally ask but bored shitless with the lacking FPL so thought it would be something else to talk about :))

๐Ÿ™‚ Man City do look the more promising, not a great fan of Mancini though, I guess if they're not winning he'll be gone by November anyway...

Never supported a club but always been a fan of football, dad not into it so never adopted a club, about time I did at 34 I guess ๐Ÿ™‚

I did like Newcastle as an outside option but selling Carroll was a bad move and pushed them back into mediocrity, much like Villa aiming high by hiring a rival relegated manager and Everton by never doing anything.

๐Ÿ™‚ Didn't say I was looking to adopt a team on a temporary basis - I'm thinking permanent but want a good season to start. Long term both Spurs and MC should be safe bets. Not everyone is "born with a team". I wasn't as into football when I was young, like I mentioned - my dad (or anyone else in my family) weren't really into it either so no bias was drummed into me. Simple really ๐Ÿ™‚ Not offended by anyone, all good fun!

I must admit I'd probably go for the Pool if I didn't already have a mate who supports them - I like the competition.

You'd need to be a massive Spurs fan to bother making that trip on a Tuesday.

Applebonkers, if you are about, could you give me your opinion on Al Bangoura. He signed for Forest Green a couple of weeks back and I was very surprised that we had managed to sign a relatively young player who has experience of leagues higher in England. What did you think of him when he was at Watford?

bizarre player. hard to pinpoint what he's good at as he doesn't stand out in any area (technique, passing, vision, tackling/breaking up play) but he's a bit of a pest to play against. i guess a really budget makelele who was understandably probably distracted by off field matters with all the asylum issues. have no idea what's happened to him since he left watford

He played for Tony Adams' team in Azerbaijan last season, so not a particularly high standard but presumably higher than Blue Square Premier level. From what I have read, it seems like the Watford fans showed real support for him during his troubles, so you fans are a nice bunch then.

    Robbed from Fiso,

"The new FPL site is designed to keep the data locked down, droves of players then sign-up with Scout, who with their new relationship with FPL now have access to that data and will make it available to members, and behind the scenes a new financial arrangement is in place whereas FPL gets a percentage of Scout's membership fees.

A nice little sleight-of-hand way to charge "serious" FPL managers a fee without affecting the more casual players"

    Jimrod!

I sympathise with your plight. I wasn't born with a team either. As a kid I followed Liverpool just cos they were winning everything and my best mate was a diehard fan.

Then I decided when I was about 12 that those weren't real reasons to support your team, so I decided to work out where my true allegiances lay...

My advice would be not to narrow your options other than a PL team so that you can pick them in FF and occasionally see em on MOTD.

Then make your choice of who you feel you identify with. Every team has their own culture, characteristics, history and ethos. Find your true team...

I went with a cheap-moderate defense last year with a focus on OOP and it was solid, but not spectacular.

I think spending on one expensive piece (Kompany, Luiz, maybe Vidic after MUFCs tough start) with a 1-2 mid-price (Hangeland, Huth, Collins, Dawson) and a couple cheapies/OOP (Risse, Wes Brown, O'Shea).

Be interested to see where the likes of Gibbs, Warnock, Walker, Martin Kelly, Phil Jones and the da Silva's land price and position wise.

I'm actually considering starting one of them on here, based on FPL scores. Not sure if Im bothered though ๐Ÿ˜›

Someone posted this earlier - looks like it might offer a free alternative to the OFL game posted above, though I haven't looked too hard at it yet.

Wow just checked out the Metro game. Must say it looks absolutely rubbish.. I managed to pick a seriously strong squad with the likes of Vidic, Terry, Lampard, VDV, Cahill, RVP etc in the space of 5 minutes without any bargain hunting. What's the point in making it so easy to fill up on star names.

Bring on FPL! or i'll soon resort to the telegraph game or some other crap. ๐Ÿ˜

Metro game point scoring means CDM and other "overlooked players" can still score very big though, it's not an FPl copy.

And centrebacks over fullbacks too I reckon! 2 pts for a clearance? Hangeland would average about 6 or 7 a match. That'd earn him more points than keeping a clean sheet.

I should clarify, Hangeland averages about 6 or 7 headed clearances per match. He probably would get even more when you consider those used with his feet.

Because the 'star names' don't always score the most points in the Metro format.
I found that to my cost in the first half of last season....

A pretty strong Wigan team lost to us (Oldham) today. 1 nil. I know it's only pre season but i reckon Wigan are for the drop this season...esp if they sell Nzog.

    taraabt off to france!!

he had a change to play in the prem (his and most others pinnacle) and could have shown himself on that stage at qpr untill jan at least and secure a top 8 signing (his and most others pinnacle)

Good move for Spuds as well. They get 40% of that, more money for Harry to spend on CM's.

PSG are loaded and in Europe.

It's certainly a step up from QPR.
