After a relatively brief lull in transfer activity, Paul Lambert has continued Norwich City’s summer recruitment by snapping up full-back Kyle Naughton from Tottenham on a season long loan.

Aside from one brief sub appearance, Naughton is an untested quantity in the top-flight and with the likes of Kyle Walker, Vedran Corluka, Younes Kaboul and Alan Hutton ahead of him in the queue for a starting place at right-back under Harry Redknapp, the player has boosted his chances of gaining Premier League experience considerably with the switch to Carrow Road. His new manager is certainly convinced the Canaries have picked up the right man for the job…

“We’re delighted to have secured Kyle’s service for the season. He’s a quality player who will come in and give the current group a hand as well as providing more healthy competition for places.

He’s a pacy player and he’s also young and hungry to continue developing his career and we’re obviously pleased he’s got the chance now to do that with us here at Norwich City”

Lambert continued to eschew his views and all but confirmed that was the end of trading for him and Norwich as they look to assemble a settled squad well before the season begins…

“We said we were looking for six or seven lads to come in and lend a hand in various positions and it’s pleasing we’ve now managed to do so. Kyle will come in and join his new team-mates on Monday and the whole group can then work together on continuing our pre-season preparations.”

The Statistics

A product of the Sheffield United youth academy, Naughton was farmed out to Scottish side Gretna in the second half of the 2007/08 season in order to gain first-team experience, though his performances were unable to prevent the troubled club’s relegation from the Scottish Premier League.

The Blades decided to retain his services the following season and, after a couple of sub appearances early on, Naughton became first-choice right-back for the club. Such was the calibre of his displays, Naughton was not only named ‘Young Player of the Year’ by his own supporters but was also selected for the 2008/09 “Championship Team of the Season”.

This form, as well as a late burst of appearances by his team-mate Kyle Walker, caught the attention of the Spurs hierarchy and the pair were signed in a deal thought to be worth £9m. As mentioned earlier, Naughton made one late substitute’s appearance in August of the following season but, having failed to make a first-team breakthrough, joined Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the season as the winter transfer window drew to a close. He was in the first team for the duration his time in the North-East and made 15 appearances in total for the club.

Last season he was shipped out on loan again, this time to Leicester. Joining up in October for what was an initial 3 month spell, the player decided to stay on loan in the Midlands for the remainder of the season, making 34 starts and scoring 5 goals in his time at the Walkers Stadium. For the second campaign on the trot he was named in the “Championship Team of the Season”.

The Prospects

Naughton will have stiff competition on his hands to nail down the right-back berth at Norwich- the player currently filling said spot, vice-captain Russell Martin, played every minute of the Canaries promotion campaign last season. He is, however, just as capable playing on the opposite flank and a slot at left-back looks more likely, though fellow loanee Ritchie da Laet’s versatility means he is just as comfortable there as he is at centre-half. Following our Pre-Season Form Guide as the team kick on should give more indication as to where Lambert’s intentions lie.

Naughton is a dynamic full-back and his attacking is as strong as his defensive duties – as evidenced by the five goals he notched on loan at Leicester last season. He doesn’t hold the same burst of pace that his team-mate Kyle Walker does but can be relied upon to move forward with enterprise. Not seen to endlessly provide crosses and assists from the bye-lines, it is his own keen eye for goal which makes him stand out as an offensive option on the flanks.

At present, Naughton is yet to appear on the FPL players listings but with all but one Canaries defender priced at 4.0, he should come in around the same mark. As highlighted by our end of season report, Naughton joins a club that didn’t pick up too many clean sheets in the Championship – the step up to the Premier League seems likely to only make matters worse. Given that the bottom of the defensive market is bereft of many stand out options; Naughton, provided he figures, will likely be as good an option as any down there – just don’t expect any miracles.

unfortunatly that wnt be useful in FPL terms.

          Agreed.

For £20m you've bought a great athlete but a rash defender. He's no Carvalho.

wait until ur sure luiz is first choice.
think of upgrading ur bench as at the start of the season unexpected players losing their spots or injuries might force u taking hits in GW2.

So if Luiz nailed his spot and Ramsey too, it would be an alright squad?

I would probably toss Baines for Samba or Jagielka if they end up being transfered and then use the extra cash to up Albrighton to Downing, thats if N'Zog goes to Villa tho.

Lots of if's, hopefully we get some early transfers happening so that we have a better idea of whats going on.

Excellent defence but the rest of your team hasn't really suffered from it, not too many risks either. Good work.

I'm still debating the merits of a more expensive defence and whether to go 2 or 3 big guns up front.

Yeh that's what I have been thinking. I figure I will play my 'big 3' defenders practically every week and Baines is like having an extra midfielder! He is a must have in my opinion. Might swop A.Cole to Luiz if he becomes a nailed on starter, then I could always upgrade Torres to RVP after a few weeks. I also like the look of Ramsey, if Fabregas and Nasri go.

You seem to be getting a lot of flack for Torres - but that's really a wait and see scenario while preseason plays out.

I'd like to call you up on Given and de Vries - surely there are better options? They just don't rotate well at all, and it's far from clear that de Vries will be first choice with Hennessey in the mix.

Interesting discussion around Camzy's team earlier on re cheap defence.

I have a similar defence (Bad K and 4 ubercheaps with double rotations). Tend to agree with her on this strategy.

Not sure why I'm seeing so many expensive defences this year. There were 161 cs last year and the best defenders avergage 4 ppg. Doesn't add up 😕

You cannot beat the consistency of a good defence. Say 14 cleanies for Vidic last season - pretty much guaranteed the same this season. You'd pay 8m for a midfield player guaranteed 14 assists over the season.

Can you link where the discussion took place - I'd be interested to see the discussion.

For my take - if you look at points/value, defenders give you the most bang for your back - particularly Baines/Hangeland/Cole and the updated Kompany is likely to have a good season for 6.0

albrighton and nzog depend on the transfer activity.
wait on luiz and alex if u dnt want risks until the picture is clear. they'll probably end up rotating like carvalho and alex in the old days.
walcott is simply too expensive for me, and their new striker might reshape their team if he's good enough. rvp is the only arsenal player worth investing in at this stage and until the picture is clear.
rooney...... is a bet, but dnt start throwing darts at me, he's playing deeper than before so a 25+ goals season is highly unlikely

Couple of questions, if I may:

    1. Any Arsenal fans have any insights into the left-back position? A curious lack of interest here for Gibbs - do you all know something I don't???

    2. Any thoughts on Man U's right back position following the departures of Neville, Brown and O'Shea? Is Rafael favourite over Fabio?

    3. There is a lot of interest in Simpson and Rodallega - is it because they are cheap and the only striking option respectively?

    4. Absence of interest in Kevin Doyle - seems strange as he should benefit from O'Hara.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

Will Rafael and Fabio really rotate during the season?

Or is that just a rumour that somebody made up and then everybody decided to believe it?

I always just assumed that Rafael was first choice and Fabio wasn't actually ready for the first team week in week out yet.

I don't understand why Fergie would go with a backline of Evra/Rio/Vidic every game and then randomly keep rotating the RB spot for no reason.

Fergie has already stated that he will rotate the team this season so expect lots of changes. I think it's still open who will get the RB position. Rafael did well the first half of 10-11 but Fabio came in and did a good job towards the end. With JOS gone, I would think it's one or the other.

Sorry to add to the stream of RMTs but I'm just a little bored and looking for some advice:

Ramage Kompany Huth (S Taylor W Brown)
    Benayoun N'Zogbia Cahill Tchoyi (Sinclair)
    RVP Shrek Ba

    So, any thoughts on:
    1) how my keepers rotate,

        1. they rotate poorly and Hennessy has
        2. Yes lots: Simpson will probably be Newcastle's fist choice RB. Orr (QPR), Monk (Swansea) and Ward (Norwich) are all also likely starters. And if you cast your eye to the article at the top of this page, Naughton could be a real option, too.
        3. Very difficult to say. Wait and see how preseason pans out. Whoever is playing in Chelsea's likely front three will be worthy of investment - but it could be very difficult to find a regular starter.

          Thanks for the input.
          1) Hennessy has what?
          2) I'm not considering Swansea or Norwich defenders until they show some promise of being able to keep clean sheets. Simpson is an option but his lack of scoring frustrated me last season and I already have a Newcastle defender. I'll have a look at Orr though.

I initially had Simpson but was put off by how few points he got for me last year.

I agree with both your points. If Chelsea spend big on another midfielder then I will definitely re-evaluate. Huth is definitely a big price but he is a goal threat. I'm looking to swap him for whoever partners Terry when that picture becomes a little clearer.

Well ben arfa is injured otherwise ide say him by a long distance. Im very interested in tchoyi though, is a very good player who may well be playing up front this season. If tchoyi plays, which we have 2 games to asses, he is by far the best 5.5 mid in my eyes.

Absolutely, forgot to include Tchoyi in that post - 6 goals from 830 mins last season is impressive.

My reservation over Ben Arfa (aside from injury) is Newcastle's investment in midfield, still not sure of starting line-up.

I can't ignore Hoolahan though - Norwich may not do much, but everything they do will be through him

    just a non fantasy question:
why is there a huge lack of investement from the promoted teams?
last season newcastle bought tiote for 1.5mil, blackpool signed a bunch of bargains, and even west brom ddnt break teh bank.

I mean promotion guarantees an extra 40 mil the first season (35 if u consider that 5 mil will be spent on automatic salary increase in the players contract clauses) plus 50 mil over the next 4 seasons if they get immediatly relegated.
this season norwich are playing with the nucleus of a team from league 1, QPR are saying that even if taraabt is old his money wnt be invested in the market while swans....
is teh promotion turning to a prize for club owners for supporting championship teams? while when they are promoted they cash in teh xtra money and go back to the lower divisions or sell the team? (oh and they increase the tickets prize along the way)

Were not even in August yet, there will be money splashed out. And yes, although you get extra money, that may be used for many many many many other things within a football club, add the fact that they don't attract that many experienced prem players....

norwich have closed their season transfers with naughton. qpr announced that they wnt bring a replacement for taraabt.
swansea dnt really know whats happening there, but strongly doubt smthn big will.
and the only reason why nooone is complaining or making a joke out of the promoted teams is blackpools last season showing which ended up in relegation after all.

Because investment and then relegation cripples a club for seasons. West Brom did it best, yoyo-ing for a few seasons then finally staying up. I expect them to consolidate on this now they're established, like Stoke did.

Week strike force, I would downgrade Yaya (Hoolahan? Sinclair?)

And upgrade one of the top 3 to a big hitter, maybe even Suarez, as he's a bit cheaper than the rest.

I like the rest of your team though, not enough promoted players for my liking though.

will Kelly be a first team player? I also like Rafael but in terms of FF he can be quite rash and get sent off. he gets injured regular enough as well probably due to his stature
