After a relatively brief lull in transfer activity, Paul Lambert has continued Norwich City’s summer recruitment by snapping up full-back Kyle Naughton from Tottenham on a season long loan.

Aside from one brief sub appearance, Naughton is an untested quantity in the top-flight and with the likes of Kyle Walker, Vedran Corluka, Younes Kaboul and Alan Hutton ahead of him in the queue for a starting place at right-back under Harry Redknapp, the player has boosted his chances of gaining Premier League experience considerably with the switch to Carrow Road. His new manager is certainly convinced the Canaries have picked up the right man for the job…

“We’re delighted to have secured Kyle’s service for the season. He’s a quality player who will come in and give the current group a hand as well as providing more healthy competition for places.

He’s a pacy player and he’s also young and hungry to continue developing his career and we’re obviously pleased he’s got the chance now to do that with us here at Norwich City”

Lambert continued to eschew his views and all but confirmed that was the end of trading for him and Norwich as they look to assemble a settled squad well before the season begins…

“We said we were looking for six or seven lads to come in and lend a hand in various positions and it’s pleasing we’ve now managed to do so. Kyle will come in and join his new team-mates on Monday and the whole group can then work together on continuing our pre-season preparations.”

The Statistics

A product of the Sheffield United youth academy, Naughton was farmed out to Scottish side Gretna in the second half of the 2007/08 season in order to gain first-team experience, though his performances were unable to prevent the troubled club’s relegation from the Scottish Premier League.

The Blades decided to retain his services the following season and, after a couple of sub appearances early on, Naughton became first-choice right-back for the club. Such was the calibre of his displays, Naughton was not only named ‘Young Player of the Year’ by his own supporters but was also selected for the 2008/09 “Championship Team of the Season”.

This form, as well as a late burst of appearances by his team-mate Kyle Walker, caught the attention of the Spurs hierarchy and the pair were signed in a deal thought to be worth £9m. As mentioned earlier, Naughton made one late substitute’s appearance in August of the following season but, having failed to make a first-team breakthrough, joined Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the season as the winter transfer window drew to a close. He was in the first team for the duration his time in the North-East and made 15 appearances in total for the club.

Last season he was shipped out on loan again, this time to Leicester. Joining up in October for what was an initial 3 month spell, the player decided to stay on loan in the Midlands for the remainder of the season, making 34 starts and scoring 5 goals in his time at the Walkers Stadium. For the second campaign on the trot he was named in the “Championship Team of the Season”.

The Prospects

Naughton will have stiff competition on his hands to nail down the right-back berth at Norwich- the player currently filling said spot, vice-captain Russell Martin, played every minute of the Canaries promotion campaign last season. He is, however, just as capable playing on the opposite flank and a slot at left-back looks more likely, though fellow loanee Ritchie da Laet’s versatility means he is just as comfortable there as he is at centre-half. Following our Pre-Season Form Guide as the team kick on should give more indication as to where Lambert’s intentions lie.

Naughton is a dynamic full-back and his attacking is as strong as his defensive duties – as evidenced by the five goals he notched on loan at Leicester last season. He doesn’t hold the same burst of pace that his team-mate Kyle Walker does but can be relied upon to move forward with enterprise. Not seen to endlessly provide crosses and assists from the bye-lines, it is his own keen eye for goal which makes him stand out as an offensive option on the flanks.

At present, Naughton is yet to appear on the FPL players listings but with all but one Canaries defender priced at 4.0, he should come in around the same mark. As highlighted by our end of season report, Naughton joins a club that didn’t pick up too many clean sheets in the Championship – the step up to the Premier League seems likely to only make matters worse. Given that the bottom of the defensive market is bereft of many stand out options; Naughton, provided he figures, will likely be as good an option as any down there – just don’t expect any miracles.

Hi guys, bit stuck on which team to pick so your advice would be very welcome.

    A)Hart(De Vries)
    Baines, Samba, Riise(Olsson, Simpson)
    Yaya, N zogbia, Bale, Jarvis(Sinclair)
    Suarez, Ba, Holt

    B)Given(de vries)
    Jagielka, Samba, Riise(Olsson, Simpson)
    Lampard, N Zogbia, Bale, Jarvis(Sinclair)
    RVP, Ba, Odem

I know they are similar but A seems more balanced but B has higher point scorers from past seasons, so what do you think??

Alight guys I do a money league where everyone puts in £10 for the main league with prize money going to around the top 10 depending on how many people enter. (43 last year)(All money goes to prizes)

We also do a couple of other leagues e.g. A big boys league for another £20, an "I know the score" league for £10.

Drop me an email if you are interested although note you will have to transfer me the money before the first week of the season or we will kick you out. We have done the league for about 10 years so have much experience and will not tolerate none payers.

Ya round there sounds on the money. I will invest if he comes and Tevez is gone.

How are you looking at covering Chelsea attack ,ive had Drogba,Malouda and Kalou pencilled in at various points this week.

Torres from what ive seen has taken some of his form from last year. Malouda if he is withdrawn is a no go for me.

Any faith in Kalou or Drogba playing?

Bit early to call on AVB's thoughts. I am confident Malouda won't play deep when Ramires returns. Malouda should be a certain starter in an attacking role though. Drog has been pencilled into my squad but I am not comfortable with him. Benayoun may be the steal. Would be very surprised if Kalou starts.

    RMT!

    Given/Robinson
    Luiz Kompany Rafael STaylor Orr
    Silva Modric O'Hara Dempsey Marveaux
    Suarez Torres Hoilett

The bargain players are not obvious this year (except for O'Hara and STaylor) so Ive gone for a strongish defense to play safe for the first 6 weeks until things settle down. Rafael is a season keeper.

Silva and Dempsey are good midf options and can easily be replaced by Zog or Downing should they show form for new clubs.

Modric had a stunning end to last seasons and will rack up BPs. A move to Chelsea will increase appeal.

Torres is a punt but one that could pay off - new manager, refreshed player. If it doesnt work there is the safer Bent for a similar price. I think Hoilett a good player, nice first fixture this year which will influence price if he gets a goal or 2

Not sure Modric moving to Chelsea will increase his appeal. He will play deeper and probably face tougher competition for BPs. Harry playing him attacking mid in a 4-4-2 just typifies how poor his managerial skills are. Modric is simply wasted in that formation.

This is the first team that I have seen posted with Marveaux in it (although I've probably missed a few). I think he'll quickly prove himself to be one of the best value players for fpl. Personally, I have Moses in my team at the moment instead, at least for the first few weeks to capitalise on Wigan's fixtures and then I plan on changing him to Marveaux.

Arsenal may well line up Nasri, Gervinho and RVP as an attacking trio. Walcott had a shocking 2nd half to last season. I am hoping Wilshere gets the Fab role behind the front 3.

Nasri may get it if he stays. You could also see a RVP deeper with Walcott and Gervinho coming in from the wings to central striking areas and a midfield of 3 behind with no advanced mid, all speculation mind yet

Yeah Nasri is a more logical replacement in the Fab role. Would make him very appealing. VDV still interests me. With Bale fit again he should resume a role behind the striker? Mind you, Lennon seems shot to pieces at the moment. VDV off Adebayo would be a menacing strike force.

But his fixtures could not be much worse. I wanted him in as he should hog everthing in that team but i cant see many Spurs goals in the fixtures they have. At most maybe 1 at best in some and he would have to be doing all the scoring to match other options probably.

Harry will prob bid 40mil for Darren Bent by August.......

Big game player VDV though. Not too concerned by their fixtures. I probably trust them more to score against arsenal than swansea.

                    No prob mate.

I think you are covering teams with good runs but maybe abit risky with the ones you are choosing.

I wouldnt have Toure as captain material, he could easily just be part of a 3 man midfield with no set pieces.

I think Osman is too much as Baines covers you, A Johnson i wouldnt like to risk as Dembelle is very well thought of and will def get minutes.

Hernandez could work out for you, Risky mind
I suppose you would be going for Mal captain week 2 yes?

Thanks very much. Yes, Mal captain GW2 & 3. I have a feeling in my water about Everton, and the only reason I have Hernandez, is because too many have Suarez. If he fails to score early doors, it will be carnage!

With the new bonus system, I believe Yaya may be worth a punt, but I take your point.

Wenger is so stupid. I don't know why he spent cash on Gervinho when he doesn't have an assured keeper and a defence with pot holes all over the place. Then again, maybe he pulled the crystal ball out and predicted RVP will get injured in November.

I wonder if there's a betting market for when RVP will get injured this season?

          "Wenger is so stupid"

Szzzzcney seems very competent and Wenger says he will add to the defence. Yesterday they bid for Jagielka.

Gervinho will be a good option for the team to cover Arshavin poor form or late and if 1 of the 2 bigs boys leave.

Kompany has to be the best value defender this season. He was wrongly classed as a midfielder last season, so the 18 clean sheets he got in 2010/11, he missed out on 54 points. He should have scored 149 points last season, which would have put him as the fourth best defender, above Vidic, and just behind Cole, Hangeland and Baines.

Surely the must-have defender in every team, this season, for just 6M.

Wouldn't have Cerny, there are 4m GKs who will play. De Vries and Ruddy are better options if you can't stretch to Al Habsi. Very strong midfield though. Helguson? No one else better in his price bracket? Maybe downgrade the unreliable Nani to someone like Dempsey/Chelsea midfielder so that you can strengthen the front line.

Whilst they are unpredictable, I think they have enough firepower to put a few in in their opening fixtures. Plus, Whelan said that the N'zogbia money would be spent on a replacement. Think 10m is very fair for him, but Villa said they are reluctant to pay above 9m. They just got 17m for Downing, surely they'll sign him?

Ya same, but United have a habit of tight games early on at home, May leave him be. With the harder fixtures his place should be nailed on

I have a 2 teams planned at minute, both have no Arsenal, one depends on Aguero being 9.5mil and Alex starting for Chelsea.

What do people think to this team? Have gone for the budget/value midfield option...

    Given, Kenny
    Cashley, Baines, Kompany, Orr, Simpson
    N'Zogbia, Sessegnon, Sinclair, Arfa, Buzsaky
    RVP, Rooney, Zamora

Nothing wrong with a budget midfield per sé, but you have four players in there without much prem experience between them. And Ben Arfa is injured - a doubt for the start of the season.

Personally, I'd downgrade Cole or Baines and go for one more assured choice in midfield.

Only problem is there's not many mids I fancy around the 8-8.5 mark. Another option, perhaps Rooney -> Wingie and Arfa -> VDV/Malouda?

Really? This does change a lot. Damn, had totally decided against him. May have to shift O'hara out now... Think Ramsey is the better 6.5 mid is Fab goes though.
