Saturday brought a whole raft of pre-season friendlies with many of the Premier League top guns stretching sinews.

Gervinho’s brace on his Arsenal debut offered an early warning sign to the chaos he can cause defences – enough to have Arsene Wenger purring in post-match anticipation. Fantasy Managers will be stroking chins, pondering the merits of the Ivorian, perturbed no doubt by his classification as a Fantasy forward.

United overcame the heat to earn another stateside victory over Chicago Fire – Wayne Rooney again on the scoresheet. Liverpool meanwhile, slipped to a surprising reversal on Humberside, Nigel Pearson’s Hull City humbling the Liverpool revolution despite debuts for Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s abilities and Fantasy potential is undoubted; his brace in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates will surely have him blink brighter on our pre-season radars. Enough to cause an initial squad overhaul? Tottenham’s early fixtures cause concern but the Van der Vaart pre-season form may yet force a rethink.

There were plenty of other sides in action, including Everton, Sunderland, Norwich and Swansea. With an array of friendly matches pouring in today, it pays to keep up to date with the pre-season trends.

Our pre-season form guide is up to date with all yesterday’s action, scorers and team lineups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Really don't think Downing is that much of a risk. Gerrard's still injured and it'll be the central players, Meireles, Aquilani, Adam and Henderson who are rotated more. Kuyt and Downing are more than likely safe.

I agree... so many people saying 'nah downing rotation risk'. kenny is clearly looking for width to deliver to him and downing is the one specialist at lfc who can do it at the moment. I'd say almost a certain starter...

what do people think about malouda this year, he got off to a flier last season when he was playing in a ver advanced role (almost as a striker) do we think villas boas will continue to deploy him in this role, if so I reckon he is a must have for Chelsea's 1st few games

Considering fixtures form possible team position which is better.

Starting week 1 with VDV & Rooney,
which one to move out to target the Chelsea games? Coming around to the idea of going VDV > Malouda as Chelsea strikers will be hard to predict /may not have one starting both games.

I have one expensive midfielder in Silva but apart from that all 6-6.5m. Seems like there's a lot of potential bargains in midfield but very few strikers. In defence there are some good bargains but I think you need to get some defenders from the big teams as they should get the most clean sheets. Its difficult to get a guaranteed starter in defence for a big club who is also cheap.

Ramsey might need time to adjust to his new role. He didn't get many points last season, so it's a bit too much of a gamble to start with him now in my honest opinion

shwarzer is an interesting choice. I'm not sure how well he rotates with given, but with Martin Jol's promise of 'Attacking football' I'm not sure if he'll be particularly outstanding this season. Still, he's rather cheap and first choice. Al-habsi or begovic might be other options to consider to rotate with given

Gervinho I feel is a rotation hazard with chamak and van perise. He may also be rested for champions league games.
Nzogbia has been on strike at wigan and I can't see that helipng his games at all despite wigan's great first 3 fixtures. Unless he moves clubs I think his temperment might cause him to get little return.
Duff I'm unsure about where he fits into Jol's plans. If he gets plenty of gametime then he might be worth it, otherwise I don't see him getting a great return

Hernandez is a rotaion hazard as is warnock and jagielka. Gervinho might also be rotated or rested for champions league football. I think he's an unncessary risk at this time of the season, despite his fine pre-season gaols

I only see enrique being viable if he moves clubs. Hughes is a better buy for fulham and the same price imho

Modric isn't particularly good from a fantasy prospect either. He doesn't score a lot of goals or have too many assists

            Yeah, that's better

Van der vaart has tough fixtures at the start but his quality and the fact that he's on penalties should see him through. Hopefully he isn't rested for Europa either

Wilshere has tough fixtures in gameweeks 2&3 and I don't remember his returns being great from last year, but he might be worth a gamble if he isn't rotated too much

Holt is great value in my honest opinion, and drogba has good starting fixtures. Him and luiz should be sound buys if they aren't rested too much
N'zogbia has gone on strike and seems unhappy at wigan, but should flourish if he moves clubs, and if he doesn't his first 3 fixtures are fantastic.

I think so, as I don't feel Moyes has full confidence that Cahill can cut it there physically. But Gueye seems smarter this season as far as learning to use (or shall I say Cahill be the tackle magnet; [see dempsey to zamora paradigm]).

That is also prefaced by saying that Saha is better in Moyes' mind considered 'out'. As well as Anichebe & Beckford may eat into a lot of his minutes early. But he appears to be on the verge of first choice. He looks a bit of a stud out there. Overlooking the hotmess hairstyle.

He's a baller. They live to play, and I can't see him missing anything. That team would turn into essentially chuckers with Carroll up front.

whos the best bet for a midfielder at 4.5-5million - would just be used as a sub

Not really much value there I'm afraid... Moses? If you could stretch to 6m there's some bargains to be had.

Tanks for the reply re Suarez earlier Rush. Have Carroll right now, might wait and see tho.

Rin-tin-tin... if you want to take an outside chance on someone, Tchoyi (WBA) might be worth a (somewhat risky) gamble for 5.5... talk about pushing him forward after some pre season performances and his hat trick at the end of last season. Fairly big gamble tho' - the 6m mark is probably the place to be if possible.

Could use a bit of advice picking the final player in my squad, would be grateful for any suggestions!

    GIven / Ruddy

    A Cole / Kompany / Rafael / O'Shea / Simpson

    Downing / N'Zogbia / Taarabt / Sinclair / 6.0 midfielder

    RVP / Suarez / Zamora

Any help on that last midfielder? Was thinking Hoolahan at 5.5 but makes my middfield a bit promotion-heavy. Would appreciate any comments 🙂

Brunt and barton would be good choices. They're both on penalties and got decent returns last season

Brunt has bad fixtures first couple of gameweeks though, and barton can be a cards magnet at times :p

I don't trust wolves much. Very inconsisent in my honest opinion
Mcarthy also seems rotation mad. Only Jarvis got over 3000 minutes for wolves last season

They're the kind of lot that give thee impression of fighters. I think they only respond to relegation fears, I would watch them the first GW or two, I'm w/ Syntax

Looks about right though I think Al Habsi is getting more love than Kenny. 2 of those midfield spots can probably be filled with Sinclair and Taarabt. There must be about 20 different mids that are frequently coming up.

Greetings all, newbie here, 1st post. Would anyone mind RMT please?

I only played this gane 1st time last year and also wondered what the preferred formation generally is on here. Think I'm going for 3-5-2.

    Fabio, Huth, Kompany, (Shittu, Simpson)
    Lampard, Silva, Etherington, Ireland, Sessegnon
    Rooney, Zamora (Holt)

    Rooney capt and Lampard vice.

Thoughts or suggestions appreciated, cheers. Also, I have £1M left.

    Not bad at all..!!

I like Bents fixtures over Suarez's though.

What does every body think. VDV or Malouda?? Major headache picking..!!!

As you replied to me I'll reply to you!

Firstly I picked Suarez over Bent because he's slightly cheaper, and represents much greater value IMO - he assists more than Bent and both will score a lot.

I had trouble picking 1 out of VDV/Malouda, in the end went for VDV. He has set pieces to his name which Malouda doesn't. Also a guaranteed starter, Malouda isn't. Both would be good additions though, lets' not forget.

not alot of love for Bale here.. why so? i thought at 8.0 he would be in alot of teams.. i can understand leaving him out due to early fixtures but the man is a star
