Saturday brought a whole raft of pre-season friendlies with many of the Premier League top guns stretching sinews.

Gervinho’s brace on his Arsenal debut offered an early warning sign to the chaos he can cause defences – enough to have Arsene Wenger purring in post-match anticipation. Fantasy Managers will be stroking chins, pondering the merits of the Ivorian, perturbed no doubt by his classification as a Fantasy forward.

United overcame the heat to earn another stateside victory over Chicago Fire – Wayne Rooney again on the scoresheet. Liverpool meanwhile, slipped to a surprising reversal on Humberside, Nigel Pearson’s Hull City humbling the Liverpool revolution despite debuts for Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s abilities and Fantasy potential is undoubted; his brace in Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Orlando Pirates will surely have him blink brighter on our pre-season radars. Enough to cause an initial squad overhaul? Tottenham’s early fixtures cause concern but the Van der Vaart pre-season form may yet force a rethink.

There were plenty of other sides in action, including Everton, Sunderland, Norwich and Swansea. With an array of friendly matches pouring in today, it pays to keep up to date with the pre-season trends.

Our pre-season form guide is up to date with all yesterday’s action, scorers and team lineups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What do people think of Kalou? Any chance of nailing down a first team berth?

What City-attacker is the best bet? Silva? Expensive compared to Tata and Johnson. I do have Kompany at the back.

Downgraded RVP to Bent, to have money to spend elsewhere. Stupid?

    Given - Kenny
    Kompany - Rafael - Warnock - Alex - Simpson
    Malouda - Sinclair - Taarabt - Silva - ??(5.5m)??
    Rodallega - Bent - Suarez

    Please comment.

Unless they get Aguero I'm not getting any City attackers, I simply have no room or money available. I don't think they'll score too many goals since they're more of a defensive team.

Why are people obsessed with having a piece of their attack?

City's strength is at the back and their defenders are not over priced, double even triple up on them and that's your clean sheets sorted more often than not.

Got 2 City defenders and 1 Chelsea, really considering 3+1 or 2+2 to secure that area.

There's plenty of options attack wise but clean sheets were hard to pick last year.

all depends on form. nani is looking like he picked up where he left off last season in preseason friendlies. Valencia is a fav or SAF.. so altho young might get rotated in and out for one of them.. I could see him potentially lining up behind rooney.

Forget pre season, it means nothing, the biggest indication about Nani is he got left out of their biggest game of the year and last few weeks of the season, that's all you need to know.

yeeeaaaah... but that was alot to do with his 'attitude'. since then, SAF has made a point of saying that he has a future at MUTD. Less to do with his ability, and from the preseasons so far, last year wasn't a one hit wonder

AriseSirGiggsy - please don't comment such lies.

Theres no way TP will move Huth back to RB after his performances last season. He was talking up Wilkinson towards the end of last season and theres nothing to suggest he's more than happy to keep him as first choice RB.

Woodgate (if fit) will primarily be used as cover for Huth and Shawcross and will probably feature as a rotation tool for the Europa League.

you might be jumping the gun with gervinho. if van persie is fit he will be up front on his own, which might push gervinho onto the wing.. but better to see how they line up before they investing.

mind you, as soon as van persie gets injured he is a shoe in.

Im confused, where are you expecting Gervinho to play if not out wide?

Wenger had clearly stated that he can play right, centre or left and that he will make an immediate impact.

              hmm.. we're all just guessing.

personally, i would've figured that walcott and nasri will feature on the flanks behind RvP, with wilshere, ramsey + 1 behind in midfield

I would've figured that gervinho will be rotated around the front 3.. unless form dictates otherwise

He came on in the front 3 today I believe. Better signs than previous games

If Torres keeps up this form Drogba surely will get gametime.

Ive still no clue how to target Chelsea. Wont have any of them Week 1.

looking ahead, arsenals fixtures are sick from gameweek 3... this poses a little bit of a conundrum because premium slots are few and most will want chelsea/city players at the start.

for gw4 the vast majority of players will want to bring in both Wilshere and RVP. I have a plan for this.

Start off with Silva, Carroll (2 home fixtures + Arsenal he will love that + Suarez Wont play the first few games) & Zogbia (if stays at wigan).

    Wk2 - change Silva to Malouda. (-1mln)
    Wk3 - do nothing
Wk4 - change Zog to Wilshere & Carroll to RVP (-1mln)

Need 2mln in cash to carry out plan

Good afternoon everyone, 2 questions. Firstly, do we know which pre season games are happening today, and i'd like an opinion on my team:

    Given (Kenny)

    Alcaraz Hangeland Kompany (Young) (Simpson)

    Tarabt VDV Toure Barton (Sinclair)

    Ba Rooney Suarez

(i'm aware about the issue of suarez not starting the season but i''m confident he will)

    Cheers in advance guys

Just curious, but does anyone reading have any strategy for picking players and transferring them? After about 10 years of getting absolutely nowhere I'm now trying to manage a team from a mathematical perspective - wondered if anyone else is employing selection tactics and what success you've had in the past.

strategy. bring in form players at the start and average 1.5-2 transfers a week to build up the team value. 2nd half of the season take as few hits as possible.

its much easier to pick a good team after 6 weeks in. the start is always a bit messy

selection tactics? i like to think there's some tactics to my selections. but you seem to be talking about something else: a mathematical formula for picking players with the optimum price/performance ratio? might take the fun out of things, and your formula would end up chasing past points, not predicting future ones.

I'd stick with Baines and Zamora - Baines is expensive, but completed more crosses than anyone else last season (bar Nani, I think), takes set pieces (especially with Arteta always injured), and has an extra productive target in Beckford to compliment Cahill. If Jagielka goes it might harm the defensive returns though.

Zamora would have been one of the better strikers last year if it weren't for having 6 months off.
