Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia has so far been relatively straightforward. Three games, three wins, no goals conceded and with every passing game, Andre Villas-Boas’ side are looking more threatening.

From a Fantasy perspective, however, matters are not quite so positive. Speaking at a press conference in Hong Kong, Andres Villas-Boas suggested that even his favoured formation, the 4-3-3, may possibly be open to change:

We have this idea of a 4-3-3 and we are focusing on it at the moment. It doesn’t mean we won’t go to other formations because you have to have this flexibility to challenge for the Premiership.

I think with the players’ experiences they are more able to do it. The 4-3-3 is a system for us in the end where it is not just a striker, it is three forwards in the end, and we have this flexibility in the squad.

It’s early days for Villas-Boas and with the club yet to make a significant move in the transfer market, it’s clear the new boss is weighing up every player currently in the Blues squad before turning his focus on replenishment.

What has been significant so far is the use of Yossi Benayoun- the Israeli made just 1 start and 6 sub appearances in an injury-blighted first season at Stamford Bridge but Villas-Boas has been utilising his talents as part of the Chelsea front three. Indeed, the player was singled out by the new boss, who suggested his inclusion offers the side more variety:

Yossi is a creative player coming from the channels to between the lines, so we have the flexibility to try different structures. We tried 4-4-2 in a diamond against Malaysia, 4-2-3-1 against Thailand in the second half, so we are getting bits and pieces with other formations, and we are pretty happy at the moment and not focusing a lot on the striking positions.

Starting at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League -and classified as a midfielder- Benyoun could come into our thinking as an out-of-position player in the upcoming campaign if Villas-Boas decides to lean towards a definite starting XI next season. At present, though, this only increases the number of options available to Fantasy managers eyeing up Chelsea targets. Benayoun now seems likely to fight it out with Florent Malouda, Daniel Sturridge, Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka for the two wide forward positions, as Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba continue to do battle for the lone central striker role.

The one real positive aspect here was the candid nature of the new manager- Villas-Boas seems quite happy to talk in length with regards to his thinking and Fantasy managers will be hoping his Friday press conferences mirror those of Carlo Ancelotti. The former Blues boss was the most “Fantasy friendly” manager of recent times, with his tendency to announce the Chelsea starting line-up a day or two in advance.

Given that last season’s runners-up have (WBA, NOR, SWA) in their first six games of the season, Fantasy managers will be hoping for more of the same clarity; with Chelsea likely to score big in those three games, second-guessing their players is a headache none of us need.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    RMT!!!

    Mignolet
    Kompany/Vermaelen/VanBuyten
    De Bruyne/Defour/Fellaini/Witsel
    Lukaku/Hazard/Dembele

    Gordon/Given

    Hughes/ A. Cole/ Kompany/ Huth/ Simpson

    Dyer/ Downing/ Malouda/ Barton/ Taarabt

    Holt/ Bent/ Anelka

2 million left in the bank so lots of options. The big question mark is Anelka. I am definitely starting with 3 Chelsea players just cannot decide which three. Any advice?

Anelka has a high chance of starting on the bench or alteast being heavily rotated. Nothing so far this preseason has shown that Malouda has his spot nailed on either. It's tough because there are so many if's. So far I have A.Cole and Lampard, I would much rather have Luiz and Malouda and spend the extra 2.5 somewhere else but then I'm left with two still pretty expensive players that might not do much.

I noticed Adam is rated pretty low in the projections area for this year. Do you think that its based on him being heavily rotated, having a drop in BP's or just not doing well at Liverpool (or all of the above)?

I would say 'all of the above'

won't take penalties, won't be involved in all the goals, won't be the star performer for BPs

It's because Liverpool have such depth in midfield this season. We've got Gerrard, Henderson, Adam, Lucas, Spearing, Shelvey, Meireles and Aquilani at the moment, who have to fight for a maximum of three places. I think Adam will be a regular starter though.

Ya its too bad, his going to Liverpool is probably a good thing for Adam as a player, just sucks in terms of FPL. I would love to have him in my squad but at his current price, I think I will have to leave him out.

    How’s this looking?

    Ruddy, Given
    Kompany, Hangeland, Simpson, Cahill, Enrique
    Lampard, Barton, O’Hara, Moses, N’Zogbia
    Van Persie, Carroll, Holt

I will swap Barton or O’Hara for Sinclair after GW1, and after GW2 I’ll probably switch Carroll for Suarez.
Also, I will get rid of Enrique if he doesn’t leave Newcastle.

    Thanks!

    RMT

PICK U OWN FECKING TEAM - stick you neck out, do you research and go with it, take conviction and the pride associated, only use information to quench the thirst for knowledge. Otherwise everbody will end up with them same players...

    FYI -
    1) Rotation will apply to last years top 6 teams to varying degree's.
    2) No one knows WTF is going on with Tevez
    3) No one knows if SAF will prefer Rafael or Fabio
    4) No on knows who is going to get injured
    5) Comments here are other competitors guesses, opinions and BS - not much FACT;

Lastly but most IMPORTANT, if you not happy with a player(s) after GW1 you can make changes!!!

    Go on grow a set.........

I agree with the sentiments, I guess the issue is the lack of discussion about things.

I've posted a pick of options above, and I guess I'm part of the problem in that respect. But I'd really like people to discuss the merits of players.

This site is intended for us to share ideas, strategies and players, so don't get all high and mighty about 'picking your own team', we're here to discuss these things (although Boselli was about the worst thing to be agreed upon on these forums)

I like to post the odd team now and then, so see if my musings are just too far our there, or if someone has spotted a better option.

I also try and post useful information back (did quite a bit of looking into Rafaels pre season performances on the last thread) to try an ease other people's headaches.

It's nice to get other people's viewpoints, you don't have to take the advice but it can help you make those decsions you are not certain of.

anyone seen how tchoyi is playing this year - says in preseason guide that he is gettig played up front and he is listed as a midfielder - could be worth the picking as only valued at 5.5mill - and any truth in the rumours that hutton may be leaving spurs for another prem club as he'd be a good purchase if gets played as he likes getting forward

Here is the latest iteration of my team with the aforementioned Rafael in there:

    Given
    Kompany, Ivanovic, Rafael, Cahill (bol)
    Barton, VDV, N’Zogbia, Cahill (eve)
    Rodallega, RVP

Subs – Mingolet, Olsson, Dyer, Holt
    1.0m in the bank.

I am thinking about including some chelsea/utd attacking options once we see how they line up. Too uncertain about Torres/Drogba to put that much money in them, and the same goes for Nani/Young/Valencia.

He has had a header cleared off the line in pre-season, other than that he's not done much so far. Arteta has been on the free kicks. Gueye has scored 3 goals in as many games so could be one to watch if he gets games. It is only pre-season though.

picking a midfield is abit tricky this time as 8 of last years top ten are out of contention really.

im thinking maby going for a big 3 up front and a cheaper midfield untill the line ups become clear.

I agree that there is more value in Zamora over Dempsey,
but then there is also more value in N'zog over Bent.

    full-back or central defender???

what defenders do you prefer in your team - full backs where you have more chance of an assist or the centre half where you have more chance of goals from set pieces etc???

also with the new EA BP system who is more likely to get more BP out of this??
