Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia has so far been relatively straightforward. Three games, three wins, no goals conceded and with every passing game, Andre Villas-Boas’ side are looking more threatening.

From a Fantasy perspective, however, matters are not quite so positive. Speaking at a press conference in Hong Kong, Andres Villas-Boas suggested that even his favoured formation, the 4-3-3, may possibly be open to change:

We have this idea of a 4-3-3 and we are focusing on it at the moment. It doesn’t mean we won’t go to other formations because you have to have this flexibility to challenge for the Premiership.

I think with the players’ experiences they are more able to do it. The 4-3-3 is a system for us in the end where it is not just a striker, it is three forwards in the end, and we have this flexibility in the squad.

It’s early days for Villas-Boas and with the club yet to make a significant move in the transfer market, it’s clear the new boss is weighing up every player currently in the Blues squad before turning his focus on replenishment.

What has been significant so far is the use of Yossi Benayoun- the Israeli made just 1 start and 6 sub appearances in an injury-blighted first season at Stamford Bridge but Villas-Boas has been utilising his talents as part of the Chelsea front three. Indeed, the player was singled out by the new boss, who suggested his inclusion offers the side more variety:

Yossi is a creative player coming from the channels to between the lines, so we have the flexibility to try different structures. We tried 4-4-2 in a diamond against Malaysia, 4-2-3-1 against Thailand in the second half, so we are getting bits and pieces with other formations, and we are pretty happy at the moment and not focusing a lot on the striking positions.

Starting at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League -and classified as a midfielder- Benyoun could come into our thinking as an out-of-position player in the upcoming campaign if Villas-Boas decides to lean towards a definite starting XI next season. At present, though, this only increases the number of options available to Fantasy managers eyeing up Chelsea targets. Benayoun now seems likely to fight it out with Florent Malouda, Daniel Sturridge, Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka for the two wide forward positions, as Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba continue to do battle for the lone central striker role.

The one real positive aspect here was the candid nature of the new manager- Villas-Boas seems quite happy to talk in length with regards to his thinking and Fantasy managers will be hoping his Friday press conferences mirror those of Carlo Ancelotti. The former Blues boss was the most “Fantasy friendly” manager of recent times, with his tendency to announce the Chelsea starting line-up a day or two in advance.

Given that last season’s runners-up have (WBA, NOR, SWA) in their first six games of the season, Fantasy managers will be hoping for more of the same clarity; with Chelsea likely to score big in those three games, second-guessing their players is a headache none of us need.

Anyone else having difficulty spending the 100m?

I have a bunch of cash left over and can't really find anyone worth spending it on. Everyone seems to be very well priced making it so much more of a headache than it was last year.

Suarez bit of a risk GW1 perhaps? Not sure re Lescott when Kompany seems a more reliable option.

        Like Brunt, VDV and Taarabt

Rooney looks a good option up front.

Keep an ear out for news on Suarez. You want Brunt to start every week? Personally, I'd downgrade AJohnson and upgrade Brunt to someone you'll want to play all the time - but that's a personal thing I guess.

VDV has killer games weeks 2-5, will you be shipping him out for someone else or riding the storm out?

Hmm, had a fiddle with the squad earlier and I've somehow ended up with Davies, Zamora and Ba up front. I wouldn't normally mind but Bolton have fixtures from hell and it's just not right not having a "big" name up there. That said my defence and mid look fairly tasty 😀

I was staring at a woman trying to breast feed on the bus today.

She said, "You're a really weird bloke."

"Why?" I asked. "Because I'm staring at you?"

Had a blinding season for the 'Orns last year, but it's a big step up in class. A bit like Bent, not lightning quick but 'knows where the goal is'. Also good at bringing in those around him, so Sinclair could benefit (as Sordell did for Watford last year). Until last year had a tendency to fade after Xmas, but usually starts the season well, and opening fixtures don't look too bad, so maybe woth a gamble. If he doesn't get going, you could swap back to Odem aftre 3 games, when WBA's fixtures ease up anyway...

    First RMT of the season.

    Thoughts on the following:

    Given (Ruddy)
    Evra, Kompany, Hughes (Orr, Simpson)
    Lampard, Nzog, Sessengon, Barton, Moses
    RVP, Bent (Holt)

Shift to 3-4-3 when fixtures dicate, and bench either Barton or Moses.

Roon is notoriously a slow starter? Fixtures not likely to mean he goes goal crazy even if he flies early. Liverpool have Arse/Spurs/Stoke/Everton away in first 7 games so I am avoiding their players until they settle in....a lot of new players. Dzeko may be the steal. Bent is certainly the safest bet though. The new bonus system sounds like it may favour him...previously he needed a hatrick to get any bonus.

Ya, I'm in that boat but I've come to the conclusion that if you want Chelsea coverage (for GW1 anyways) that you have to go with the more expensive option and then if either Malouda or Luiz start to get regular time on the pitch, then you can switch out either Lamps or Cole for them.

I'd upgrade Dyer. 3-5-2 should really be the formation you should build from. Midefielders generally score the most points due to the clean sheets and +1 goal point v strikers. A lot will go through Barton this year at Newcastle. He'll prob be on pens, free kicks and corners.

RVP or Rooney for gw1? I can't decide between them two, I think both will score big.

No one can answer that for ya other giving you there personal opinion. Either way your rolling the dice on a 12.0 player who's fixtures drop off after GW1. If you want either of them, I guess I would base it on who you think has the greatest chance of scoring despite crappy fixtures.

David Gill: We have made three signings - great players like O'Shea and Brown have moved on - we are looking at one more player to bring in.

The Sinclair and Taarabt situation is similar to the Dorrans and C.Adam last year. Both considered the main attacking players in their promoted teams, and a lot of people bigging them up on FFS. I will be starting with both of them in my team this year, as I started with both Adam and Dorrans last year, and will be happy if just one comes good again. Worth a risk IMO ,as they rotate v nice and having both covers

I've got both... As you say brilliant rotation between the two over the 1st 6 games...

are you better off not taking a player thats not high on the teams selected for week 1 and hope that week 2 or 3 loadsa teams pick him so that his value increases in your squad or vice versa

just looking at say arsenals chelseas 1st game stoke away which wont be easy but then they have 3 easy games - so would you be better off with torres in week 1 then in theory you should make a good profit cos people gettting a chelsea player for next fixtures

You're better of earning points than £ full stop. Value will take care of itself

my questionably clever team name is down to 3 choices, vote for your favorite!!!

    A. GospelAccording2Gyan

    B. Better Leighton Ever

    C. TheKuytOfMonteCristo

first name to 3 votes will be the team name and those who voted for the winner will finish top 1000 this year. I (empty) promise!!!!
