When it comes to midfielders, Arsene Wenger doesn’t have his troubles to seek. The Gunners boss, having seen his side’s pre-season preparation blighted by the continual speculation over the futures of skipper Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, has confirmed Theo Walcott has flown home from the club’s training camp in Bonn due to an injury picked up in training.

Walcott sat out Monday’s training and boarded a flight home from Germany yesterday, ahead of this weekend’s Emirates Cup. The Arsenal boss, while not suggesting it’s a serious problem, did admit:

“Theo went home early and was due to have an MRI on Tuesday. It is an old ankle injury from the end of last season. It’s one that comes and goes.

“We need some more investigation because sometimes he’s completely free of it and sometimes it affects him. But we had to send him back because he couldn’t practice anymore.”

The news is a source of frustration for Fantasy managers- Walcott looks good for plenty starts on the right this season and coming in at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League, may prove to be something of a bargain if one, or both, of Fabregas and Nasri follow the lead of Gael Clichy and depart for pastures new.

While new signing Gervinho could be an alternative in his possible absence, FPL have classified the former Lille man as a forward, and priced him at 9.0. Robin Van Persie is likely to be the front man of choice for the majority of Fantasy managers, however, leaving many to hope the likes of Nasri stays put, with the Frenchman surely a nailed-on starter for Wenger in the upcoming season.

    just a thought...

I remember last season, Walcott playing a game or two up front, as a support striker - do you think with the addition of Gervihno that this is a tactic Wenger may look to employ, with the possibility of Gerv playing on the right with Wally through the mid?

I wasn't looking at walcott until a few weeks in, could be a barg at 9.0 as well if wenger does try to experiment with him up front too.

    Thoughts?

There's this other fella called Robin, he might have something to say about this idea.

P.S. When did Walcott play down the middle last season? I can't remember it ever happening.

Why would you make Walcott a striker when he cant shoot, he would be much more effective on the wing where he cant cross or pass!

MASSIVELY overrated player cos he plays for Arsenal.

He's actually improved his shooting dramatically the last year or so. Good on one-on-ones and instinctive finishes if not so much from range or when he has too much time.

He'd be better (in fantasy terms at least)through the middle probably, but whether it will happen or not is massively open to debate. Wenger has always said "one day" but is that day this season?

Absolutely. He scored most of his goals last season coming in from the right and passing it just inside the far post, usually very neatly.

Still? He's proved to be an excellent finisher. His crossing has improved a lot aswell, i would say hes one of the best crossers we have at the club. 8 assists last season, thats more then the likes of Malouda, VDV, Lampard. Theo also played a lot less minutes then all of them.

Yeah he said he'll play there eventually. For Arsenal, i think he's already playing in his best position. It easier for him to use his pace and make off the ball runs coming in from the right. Can't understand how people still think he's overrated.

    Current side defensive side...

Given/Kenny - perfect home rotation first 6 games

Hughes, Kompany, Luiz, Dunne, Simpson - (Home rotation between villa and fulham for 3rd spot in DF - Simpson as cover when needed)

MF & FW has £63.5m left to be invested...

What do you think of the defensive side so far?

goal scorers and assisters who stay on the pitch on winning sides. Therefore i agree bent will do really well under the new system.

As an owner of Bent for the whole of the season before last and part of last year I have been gobsmacked how he can score a brace but not get a bonus. That will change now.

I think the new system means that it pays to invest in attacker more than ever.

I'm spending £29m on attack at the start.

In terms of bale and bonuses have a think about who will get the most goals and assists throughout the season. If you think Bale for either of them then get him in.

for me I think VDV will continue to hover up the bonus.

Don't know it all depends on his fitness after summer action, reassess the situation on august 12th and decide then. I do think he'll be a regular from GW3 unless someone else outshines him by then but he's a top player. I agree wilshere could be good trade for yaya, but you gotta heve some City attack for their sweet opening. Consider suarez or rooney to balotelli/tevez/aguero whoever looks to be in the starting line up on Aug 12 (even just for GW1)

Their isn't really a way if pricing people up, it depends in so many things, the club buying, the club selling, age, contract left etc. I just find the whole "if player X is worth whatever then player Y is worth..." it's just a pointless IMO.

I haven't got Wilshere but I remember Yaya Toure was selected by a lot of people on FPL at the start of last season and everyone on this site mocked anyone who had him in their RMTs saying he would just play defensive midfield.

For all we know Wilshere may end up getting involved more and could be a good buy at 6.5 especially since everyone seems to think that if you don't have Taarbat, Sinclair, Moses or Sessegnon you don't have much chance of competing.

Theres several players I will never have in my side despite loads of people thinking the sun shines out of their backsides..... Bent, Milner, Yaya, Gerrard for example. I'll add Wilshere to that list for this season

Ramsay on the other hand.... (if Fabregas leaves of course)

I'm not sure he's going to be in my team GW1, but he'll be in there for some of the season no doubt.

Aren't they away at Fulham in the first week? No chance.

He'll get a lot more bonus now, though.

I have NEVER been on the receiving end of Bent's braces and hat tricks. That changes this season.

I think Wilshere will do well, better than the 6.5 he is priced at. He can shoot from distance, and may end up getting bonus points for his influence.

So - time for another kicking. Feedback appreciated!
    GK: Kenny, (Moreira)
Moreira was Benfica’s no. 2, and was called into the Portugese squad for Euro 2004. QPR/SWA rotate perfectly. I don’t expect to get any clean sheets, but hope for save points from both, at a combined cost of 8.5!
DEF: Baines, Enrique, Senderos, (Bramble, Simpson)
Baines(pens) and Enrique will, should the latter go to Liverpool, rotate perfectly. Senderos is looking to become a regular and played in Europe, Simpson and Bramble rotate perfectly.
MID: Malouda, Yaya Toure, N’Zogbia, De Jong, (Osman)
Malouda, will, I believe, be the engine of Chelsea’s left midfield. Yaya toure, will not only get goals and assists, but harvest more bonii under the new system, imo. Insomnia(pens) will almost certainly take all the free kicks, and will flourish at Villa, imo. Osman will continue to improve on his last season’s form, imo. De Jong ... ah, De Jong(5.0). Everybody hates me for this, but I say he will be another bonii harvester for Citeh. In my opinion, Kompany will be the loser, as he will be the out and out defender this season ...
    STR: Rooney, Bent, Johnson A
Johnson(5.5) is a proven premiership striker, and has the talent and application to be even better - but he needs a bit of luck, Fulham have good opening fixtures, and Jol says he will provide more attacking football. Bent(pens) ... Fantasy gold. If you saw Rooney(pens) in the States, you will know that he has hit a peak of fitness not achieved before ... so ...

Just a quick point out of that lot, you don't want Baines to rotate. Rotation is for cheap players not for 8 million defenders. If you have him he plays every game. Enrique at LIV and Distin/Jagielka could rotate however.

Yeah I know thats what that means but the point of that is exploiting the rotation so that you only expose lesser teams to lesser attacks when at home. It's no good with Baines.

Nzogbia and Bent on pens seems a little ambitious.

      Like the different Goalkeeper combo.

Hope you are right about Senderos.

Osman is an interesting pick, but with Baines as well could be a little bit too much Everton. De Jong is a rubbish pick, don't choose defensive midfielders!

Love your front line, matches mine to a tee for exactly the reasons you express. Malouda/Lamps is an opinion pick, I've gone the other way, but N'Zogbot spot on and agree with your De Jong reasoning, even if he's not in my team at the mo.

But GKs? Simply don't buy your cheap-tastic saves logic myself. I would prefer to have nailed on CS magnet (Hart/Cech) but given Given's (see what I did there?) discount, gone that way instead with an Al-Habsi kicker for early GWs.

Def tactics make sense to me, but you're makng a mistake on Kompany... what he loses in Baps this season will be compensated by CSs, and likely more so. Baines too pricey for me but each to their own, but never quite got the Enrique love, I think he's a poor defender who will get found out at a better club than Brown Ale.

      Still, all the best.

Cheers, Frazek - I will think on that. I'm also a bit worried about Citeh's clean sheet potential - I can see them slumping a bit, this year. I personally like Enrique - I believe him to be positionally sound - but time will tell. I have a thing about Everton, this year ...

      Hangeland > Hughes saves 1.5m
Luiz > Cole extra £1m is worth it
Jag > Distin more of a goal threat
      Cahill > Dunne better fixtures

VDV + 0.5m above for Malouda (Very good games)

Downing & Ireland Don't see value in either added to the fact you will have N'zogbia covering Villa MF

Not sold on Suarez or Gervinho - too risky for me...

Don't they have relatively small (based on current inflated prices) buy-out clauses for other players like Falcao etc. Something like £45m or along those lines...

Surely Hulk isn't that much better? I don't see how they could turn down that amount of money.

So we're all unsure on the Chelsea backline right? It's safe to say Terry and Cole will play. How's this reasoning on Ivanovic?: If Luiz gets the nod ahead of him at CB then he will become first choice RB, i.e. making him a guaranteed starter. I know this ignores Alex and Bosingwa but I can't see why either of them would play ahead of Ivanovic in their respective positions.

    What do you all think?

we just don't know. A Cole and Terry are the only nailed on chelsea defenders. Yes it is likely Ivanovic will play, but not as likely as Terry and Cole.

Getting Ivanovic is still a risk, a calculated, good risk that could pay dividends, but nevertheless while bosingwa is in his thoughts, it is a risk.

Just watched highlights of Newcastle 3-0 win. Marveaux and Gosling were the stand out performers. Also that 18 year old kid Vukic scored a hell of a goal at the end!

    Link test.

FFS is no longer a secret, may aswell come out into the open. Also feel like a name change, maybe to JustDave (The artist formerly known as Johnny Unitas).

Not too long to go for the season now, my girlfriend is already "joking" about me being addicted to another season of fantasy, bless.

Gah, this is soooo annoying frustrating and at the same time addictive - here's my latest squad

    Given, ruddy
    Baines, Kompany, Brown, Hughes, Simpson.
    Silva, N'Zogbia, Sessegnon, Tarrabt, Moses
    RVP, Suarez, Rodallega.

    Look good?

I am not feeling the love for Baines, he is an assist machine for sure, but with uncertainty over how much Arteta will impact on his stats, I am holding fire, he can't go too far over 8, surely, if alot of people will have him from the start.

I prefer Cole over Baines (and I have chosen him), purely because at the start of every season I go cheap on defence and later regret not having at least two expensive-ish defenders, this year it will be Kompany and Cole for me to start, with Rafael/Briggs and Simpson (will see about Rafael still).

So, I prefer Briggs over Hughes (it seems like he is playing for Fulham in pre-season, but will have to watch that one obviously), with Hughes at least you have a gauranteed starter, btw, I have same keepers, nice.

Not sold on Silva, if Tevez does leave, I think yes, if not, not so sure. I have N'Zog, Sessegnon, Tarrabt also. Moses is a nice little punt for the opening 3 weeks.

RVP I am holding off for the first 4 weeks, Suarez and Rodallega are the business I think to start, especially as it now seems Suarez will start the season.

A 8.5 team for me, would have Drogba or Torres over RVP for opening games, and would have Cole over Baines.

I expect after Aguero confirming he's had/having a medical today there's been a lot of talk about him today, sooooooooo, if Tevez goes

what price would he have to be for you to take a punt?
Do we think he'll play as a lone striker with Dzeko and Balo backup again?
Is he likely to be on pens? Does he take them at Madrid?
What price would he have to be to take a punt if Tevez stays?

      £11m+

I doubt lone striker plays 4-4-2 at Athletico

No, barry or Ballotelli on pens (unless ballotelli wants to back heal them...)

      with Tevez 9-10m

I'm not sure Balotelli would be on pens. I know he took them when Tevez wasn't on the pitch but if Tevez goes surely they'd promote someone else to chief taker. Someone who's going to play more regularly.

Good shout with Barry though, that's who I thought it might be.

Just between those players, probably because of pens if they're both playing regularly.

But in the grand scheme of things, where money is tight I'm not so sure. If they're going to stick to 4-3-3 with Malouda as a left forward I'd happily go with him and spend £1.5m elsewhere

If you bank on pens/freekicks making 1.5m difference then yes... Personally I will take Florent

If modric goes to chelsea he would go in my team without a glance, i would go with malouda, but the midfield options are already looking crowded so i've gone for drogba

I'd say Malouda and Drogba face stiffer competition for games in their positions than Lampard.

Lampard is practically guaranteed a starting role unlike any other player in Chelsea's midfield and forward line.

      That is the golden question.

Based on the little information we have I say yes Lampard is worth the extra dough.

Things is here is my team:

        Given Ruddy
        Enrique Kompany Wilkinson Hughes Rafael
        Sinclair Taarabt Malouda Barton N'zogbia
        Drogba RVP Ba

        Would it be worth doing
        Malouda>Lamps
        Drogba>Suarez
        Rafael>O'shea/Bardsley

          no to A
yes to B when suarez is a definite starter
yes to C (Bardsley out of those two)
          IMO

If villa boas does an ancelloti and says on a Friday lunchtime "hey, guys, Malouda will play tomorrow and start." then yes. but with so much competition I consider 1.5 quite cheap to pay for a guaranteed starter. I so want to get Malouda, but for 10.5m I want a player to be more nailed on than a final scene spartacus extra.
