The departure of Charles N’Zogbia may have left a huge void within Wigan’s squad but in Victor Moses the club may well have a natural replacement. Certainly that’s the opinion of Latics boss Roberto Martinez who has wasted no time in talking up the abilities of the 20-year-old as he looks to reassure the Wigan faithful ahead of what seems likely to be another turbulent season at the DW Stadium.

Moses has already done his best to live up to the billing; three goals in pre-season, including an eye-catching brace to cap an impressive showing against Al Ahli in Austria on Wednesday has added fuel to the fire. Fantasy managers are now on alert and with Moses classified as a budget midfield option across many of the games, it’s clear that the former Crystal Palace starlet warrants our attention.

While nothing is certain with just over a fortnight to go before the kick-off, it’s clear that Moses is positioning himself to make his mark. Martinez has set the scene, lavishing praise on his £2.5m capture in the light of recent pre-season performances; the Wigan boss has few doubts that, in Moses, he has a player capable of providing the kind of individual attacking verve so often delivered by N’Zogbia…

“He’s a special talent…It’s a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he’s been here he’s added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability…Charlie [N’Zogbia] has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor and maybe a couple of other players to step up…Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest.”

Opportunity knocks for Moses then, but can he grasp it and provide the inspiration for Wigan and rich returns for Fantasy investors?

Key Factors

  • Moses is available as a budget option. Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game with largely defensive players such as Cheik Tiote, Lucas and Nigel De Jong in the same bracket; there’s little doubt that Moses is an attractive Fantasy proposition amongst that kind of company.

  • Wigan’s fixtures provide ample opportunity for Moses to raise his profile and FPL value. Incredibly, Martinez’s side face all three promoted sides in their first three Gameweeks. As they found with Blackpool last season (losing 0-4 on the opening day), that can be a double-edged sword but Wigan will be expected to craft opportunities in all three matches, giving Moses the chance for returns.

  • The pre-season has confirmed that Moses is growing in stature. N’Zogbia’s departure has opened the way for a definite starting role and increased responsibility and, on the evidence so far, Moses is relishing the prospect.

  • While Moses has, to this point, failed to make an impact in terms of raw statistics and Fantasy output, that can be attributed to the fact that his opportunities have been severely limited. Despite making 21 league appearances last season, Moses was given just 8 starts; he was subbed in every one of those games, often just after the hour-mark.

  • Right now Wigan’s attacking options look limited. Just as N’Zogbia’s ball carrying abilities and direct style of play had him stand out within Wigan’s lineup, Moses has shown similar talents that could see him emerge as the Latics’ key threat to opponents. It’s clear from analysis of last season’s performance statistics that Moses will need to raise his game – to make a significant step up in his end product. Renewed confidence from a prolonged run in the side could provide the impetus for that. A risk then, but at his budget Fantasy valuation, certainly a tempting one.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

chris eagles played in the hole (stop it 😉 ) today. with lee and petrov also on the pitch. petrov has been assisting and scoring for fun so far and eagles could be an option in that role too*
unfortunately lee's injury sounds pretty bad and could affect the above. the fact the player that made the tackle was subbed straight away perhaps says it all.

*yes i now their fixtures are horrid to start with.

This was posted over on FISO, supposedly by one of the creators of ratemyteam.co.uk. Might be useful to some of you.

      "Hi guys,

I'm one of the guys who works on the ratemyteam.co.uk site and I thought I'd clear up a few issues about the site and the numbers in particular.

Firstly, the predicted points take into account a PLAYERS CHANCE OF PLAYING and HOW MUCH OF THE MATCH WE EXPECT THEM TO PLAY. So for example, Seamus Coleman who is suspended on the first day of the season we give 0 points in gameweek 1. But a player like Dzeko, who is unlikely to start, but could come on as a sub or not play at all, we give 1.21.

Also, the weekly totals are based on best 11 players , in a valid formation, and captain doubled. The reason why they seem so low is because of numerous factors.

1.) The weekly totals don't take into account the fact that IF your players don't participate then they will instead of getting 0 points get however many points that your next substitute gets (assuming you keep a valid formation). Taking this into account WILL result in an increase to your expected weekly score.

2.) Suppose you have a weekly average last year of around 55. You will appreciate that alot of value is gained during double gameweeks, when you can take advantage of players playing twice and a good weekly score for a double gameweek is around 70-80 points. A good score for a normal gameweek is around 45-50, (and this opening gameweek has no superb fixtures for the usual suspects, excluding Man City at home to Swansea i.e. this gameweek is a relatively low scoring gameweek). Also, the pricing has been done pretty well this year, so it seems quite hard to squeeze many really strong players in your team.

3.) The final number on the site, which is the sum of the weekly scores, is based on the fact that you will make no substitutions from now (as in 29th July) to the end of the 10 or so gameweeks. It is obvious that if you make no substitutions from now until the end of a 10 week period, you will not score as highly as you would hope/have done so in the past. When team news becomes more certain, the players who become more certain to play will go up in our estimation and the players who become less likely to play will go down.

Finally, Bent, Gyan, Lampard and Suarez seem to be causing a bit of discussion.

Why does Gyan score higher than Bent and Suarez?

I must admit, I was surprised when I saw Bent was lower than Gyan but it is worth emphasising it is not by very much. Both players we think are very likely starters for their respective teams. We also think Bent will get slightly more goals than Gyan. However looking at our numbers, where Gyan does well is the fact that we think he is alot more likley to get assists than Bent. Both are penalty takers for their teams, however we will monitor that situation in case that should change.

Suarez is a player who we have adjusted his early season playing probability because of the admission from Dalglish that he will not rush him back to action. Again, we will keep an eye on this situation and adjust the numbers accordingly.

Finally, Lampard is another situation we are monitoring. The news a day or so ago that Lampard may play deeper this season could hamper his attacking returns. We are waiting to hear a bit more before changing the numbers.

Pheww!! Sorry for the long read and hope that helps 🙂

    Dear mr van der vaart.
we have earnestly debated your application to be a midfielder in our club ,but feel that the next injury is always just around the corner ,never a problem replacing you but having you injured on the bench ,or having to rebuy every 3 weeks is not the way we plan to go this year ,so it is with great regret your application is denied and we wish you well with your thigh, knee, ankle, shoulder, calf hamstring...............

There are a few players causing me grief right now and they are all from 2 teams- Chelsea and Man City

Is Toure still going to have a advanced role (if he is even playing regularly that is)?
Is Silvas position under threat from Aguero?
Is Tevez leaving? (which will have a knock-on effect on the 2 probs above)
Will Mancinis rotation policy in their first season in ECL drive us crazy?

Who (that isnt 7.5) on earth do you pick for guaranteed Chelsea DF coverage?
    Will Benayoun get game time?
Will Malouda get enough game time to warrant his tag?
Dont even want to get started o their striker situation....

Two big teams with easy starts that are one of the hardest to call

    Anyone got a crystal ball?

        Chelsea fan here...

To sum it up, we're all wondering as well. AVB is clearly doing the sensible (albeit annoying for us FF managers) thing in terms of assessing players before going into the market.

Defence-pretty much picks itself. I'd imagine Ivanovic to start the first few games as Luiz or Alex haven't featured in pre-season. Then I'd say Luiz would get the nod.

Midfield-I do think that he likes Yossi and what he brings creatively to the middle. Whether that changes if we bring in the likes of a Modric remains to be seen. Lamps is Lamps so it will be A fight for that third midfield slot.

Torres will be the starting striker-I wouldn't pay any attention to the pre-season games. So it will be him, Malouda and then probably Anelka for the third spot.

But AVB won't be afraid to mix it up if need be.

Just some thoughts from watching a couple of the pre-season games anyway. Hope it's a little help.

I don't know why people think Malouda will be rotated. It is based on nothing. He is one of my must haves.
Tevez I think will stay because very few teams can afford him(50m pounds and 200k+ a week in wages).

Still no value in Adam when you consider Suarez is just .5 more, for my money.

      Kuyt-----------------Downing
      ------Carroll---Suarez-------

maybe in the first few weeks we could see Suarez rested and Meireles playing behind Carroll. Also expect Henderson to challange Adam and Downing for places.

good team except huth and hangeland are being picked on last season and with jol unlikely to get many cs and huth always seems to get the luckiest tap ins last season spending 12.5 on those too is a risk
also carrol has looked awful and unfir in preseason bent would be a batter option until carrol gets going

thanks, my thinking was Kenny was building the team around him, and my plan is to downgrade to suarez when he is a certainty. How have downing/kuyt looked, as they are the other liverpool players i am considering. Do you think they will both be certain starters?

              suarez is a must
theyve looked okay but tbh hardly played kenny is playing all the flops to try and get people to buy them hence the 3-0 losses to hull and galatasary
but with the likes of adam gerrard suarez carrol henderson downing kuyt merielis lucas all strong contenders to start there is always a rotation risk

yeah that's my worry with liverpool.

I need a strong midfielder, 8.0+ as a big-ish hitter, and i'm not keen on VDV. looking at liverpool midfielders is so difficult though with the rotation possibilities. Kuyt will be on pens with Gerrard out, but 10.0 is a lot to have invested in a rotation risk. If carroll doesn't perform, downing's potential will be extremely limited. Liverpool's fixtures are hardly perfect as well, i might stick with just carroll with the plan to downgrade to suarez later.

You've already done it for me... they are both great players, but they are both vying for that ONE striker role through the middle in a 433... So, they both will take away from each others potential... I would prefer to ONE player who will play 90 mins without fail...
