In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

Anyone but Luiz, as I said in a post above. Just concerned Luiz comes in the last 20 for some relief and you get one point, when your number four defender has a clean sheet. You will yell about that injustice. Luiz is a great player, but you want consistent starters first, then greatness, then one on the top four defenses in the league measured by clean sheets.

It's interesting no one is viewing mid-priced players as potential captaincy choices. If they hit form I think there could be weeks where they'd be fine choices. I missed several points last season stubbornly thinking I had to captain a big player despite form pointing me towards a cheaper player.

Absolutely true, I remember captaining Adam or Carrol on their streaks, while VDV and RVP were in the mud or hospital. It's just few of us know until the third week of a streak or great form.

Have sworn never to do it again. I had quite a few weeks where I captained non big team players like Ashley Young for easy home fixtures and got burnt. Just too inconsistent in my opinion.

    Baines, Kompany, Orr

    VDV, Silva(VC), Nzogbia, Moses

    Rooney, Suarez(C), Holt

    (O'Hara, Simpson, N Taylor)

.5 in bank, vdv->malouda GW2 if all is well, o'hara a great sub option if vdv or suarez dont go for some reason, if both are doubts at the deadline, i can just go vdv->malouda now.

Thats it, no more tinkering. Unless someone here can tell me what Im missing.

It's nice, I don't have any improvements to suggest, only alternatives.

I prefer Cole to Baines, Sinclair to O'Hara and someone other than N. Taylor, but it's nitpicking for the most part.

The one thing I'd recommend though is getting Malouda right away. I went through a VdV with 0.5m in the bank phase only to realize I was going to use it on Malouda in almost every situation. He's going to start, there's no one else for Chelsea down their left, and his fixtures are amazing.

Yes I don't see the point of VdV for the one game, I'm not even convinced he'll be fit for 90mins and whilst Stoke are tough they're not impenetrable. Save yourself a transfer that you might need.

There are loads of really fairly priced midfielders hovering around the 6.5 and 6.0 value.

Latest version, made a few changes most notably a big one up top.

    Given // Al-Habsi

    Kompany // Luiz // Briggs // Simpson // Caulker

    VDV // Malouda // Sinclair // Sessegnon // Moses

    RVP // Balotelli // Zamora

    notes:
    - need to keep track of Luiz & Briggs first team status
    - really fancy a punt on Balotelli for some reason. If Silva is playing central then SuperMario is more likely to start in the front 3. Also will be on pens & possibly fks in Tevez's absence.
    - Balotelli instead of Aguero allows me 4 captaincy options too
    - the big issue I see is no Villa attacking coverage - can be fixed with Sess -> Albrighton/Ireland but I want Sess too!

    Thoughts?

Simpson is the only one of your bench who is likely to start that I like. Nani too much of a rotation risk and Bale is either inspired or foolish 😉

Of course you do, you wouldn't have it if you didn't believe in it.

I don't like it because of a lack of captaincy options and the fact I only believe in having 2 big defenders at the back maximum. What's the point of defender rotation which has been proven in seasons bygone to be effective if you've got 3 huge ones you'd never dare bench?

Yeah, not bad at all. Bale is probably overpriced, especially considering their early fixtures. Bradley (the guy at Villa I presume?) isn't a guaranteed start, or at least I don't think he is, and neither is Briggs. You could go Nani and Bale-> Malouda and N'Zogbia, and have a look at your bench-fodder, but yeah, I quite like it generally.

Foster is probably going to come in at 5 or 5.5.

Kenny is only .5 more than Ruddy, still rotates well and at least QPR have a competent defensive record.

A lot of people are placing a lot of faith in him. He is an excellent keeper, but I don't know, I don't normally double up on any defences. You could put Hughes of Fulham in instead and use the extra 5m elsewhere- maybe a slightly better 2nd choice keeper.

            Malouda, Sessegnon, Barton, Moses, Ephraim

I heard VdV limped off this weekend so maybe that makes your mind up for you with Malouda? Not sure how serious the injury is though.

Orr isn't very good at all. Dyer will spend more time in the treatment room that the bench/pitch. I would find better alternatives for those two. Gabbidon in for Orr and whoever will play regularly for Dyer's price - I assume he's there as back up?

      Baines/Kompany/Bramble looks good.

I might consider downgrading one of your 12.0 strikers in order to bring more balance to your frontline. Zamora or Odem instead of Graham?

I consider Drog my punt. He started last year off with a hat trick and i was kicking myself for taking him out the day before the deadline.

Out of Nani-Val-Young, I think Nani will play most PL games. Valencia also sprained his bad ankle so I think SAF won't be too quick to use him as he will want him for the rest of the season. I think Nani grabs the spot over Young also IMO.

And everything I have read says Walcott should be fit for opener.

I am sure I will change my team many times from this though before the deadline.

For some reason I thought he was priced at 8.0m, which I thought was excessive. I think 9m is even more so. Did very well in a Blackpool team where everything went through him- penalties, set-pieces, bonus. Will not score anything like he did last season.
