In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

I see alot of strong forward lines but last season it was a struggle to find 3 good strikers. I think I ended up with RVP, Odem and Hoillet (to afford Lamps). Odem was virtually fixture proof last season. I am wondering if Odem can keep that scoring form at 7.5.

i think you should pick the best squad of 15 and if it happens to include 3 big attackers so be it.

I definitely think Fantasy football is more about the players than the system... they don't actually need to pass the ball to each other 😛

At the moment I've RVP, Zamora (can't see me removing either of those) and... Balotelli(c). Although Balo is very much subject to change, and is just a one week punt to be removed for Torres/Drogba GW2.

    Clichy Kompany Enrique A.Cole

    NZogbia Downing Barton

    Suarez Zamora Van Persie

    SUBS : Al-Habsi,Simpson,Hoolahan,Moses

Thats what ive decided on, I did have Bent as my Forwad but thought van persie will outscore him although £2.0million more!

My midfield does look weaker now though but i think my defence and strikers look quite solid

personally i prefer utilizing your subs a bit more so i would avoud players like simpson and go for a slightly more expensive defender who rotates home and away with another one.

I know a lot of people have the cheapie, though, so that's only my tactic

Team seems pretty good my main questions would be clichy (starter?) suarez (ready for action?) and maybe downing is a slight gamble until we see a few liverpool games.

I could swap Riise for clichy? I think Suarez will start the season, if he dosent im sure i will know before the season starts so i can swap him out

downing i think will start aswell

Well, a striker has to be a bit better than a midfielder of the same price... but he is usually going to play in a more advanced role so it's swings and roundabouts.

I think the key is to pick the players doing best in terms of fantasy football points (Or potential for them) and if there happen to be 3 outstanding strikers in that respect, pick them.

IMO There is no need for a fixed team structure since it is very easy to alter this with a couple of transfers, especially since you can save a transfer and then make 2 free the next week

A 10.0 invested in Bent to start can be easily swapped to 9.5 in Suarez. Relying on doing 2 transfers to change team structure can be risky as you are bound to have injuries. A few people on here are proposing teams based on allocating money to certain positions to allow flexibility.

yeah i'm just saying i don't think it's necessary to do that because it doesn't really increase your flexibility if, say, van persire gets injured and you will *only* consider changing him for an expensive player like rooney/ aguero for example

Sometimes you'd prefer to replace van persie with a cheaper option and and upgrade a midfielder

I think it's very unlikely your team's strucure at the end of the season will closely match it in gw1, put it that way

Strong DF and ATT IMO. but maybe just too many rotation risks when you look at the team as a whole. Just imagine a scenario where Rafael, Luiz, Dyer and Aguero all fail to start for their clubs (entirely possible too) and even worse just make fleeting apps from the bench. You'd be playing catch-up from GW1

Also on a side note- and purely my opinion- Wilshere is a great player but not a great FF player and Bale blows hot and cold coupled with his grim fixtures early on make him a big gamble.

I'm finding it hard to balance my team this year. The pricing is very stingy. If I spread the cash around the team it just looks weak everywhere.

So I'm opting for a weak defense- two guaranteed starters and strong FF picks (Hangeland & Komp) with one from three dross so as to allow for a strong MF & ATT with plenty of Captain options.

    haha spurs nearly got Aguero!

based on preseason form, moses is the new adam. but then he could be the new Boselli! 😉 Anyone know what Rodallega hasn't been playing in preseason?

What do you reckon? I've been tinkering for a couple of weeks now, but starting to really slow down and think i'm there. I'm aware no Asrenal or Man U coverage. And I'm consuious that a few things may become clearer over teh next week i.e. Benyoun, Ramsey, wolves kepper etc....

    De Vries

    Salgado Hughes Kompany

    Silva Taarabt N'Zogbia Malouda

    Bent Carroll Zamora

    Given Sinclair Simpson Bramble

Not a bad team at all! Just not sure about the defence. Wont score you many big points. Good midfield though, tad expensive!

ta, yeah, Kompany and Hughes prob best bet for points in defence, but to compensate, blackburn, newcastle and Sunderland rotate very well for the third stricker. The value is in midfield and forwards for points imo. Cleensheets are such lotteries that there more a bonus than something that can be relied upon.

Obviously the likes of baines, Cole get the assists and goals, but you are paying good money for them.

Yeah thats fair enough, I usually like to have a few defenders who can score the odd goal though as it is worth a nice few points!

Ive gone for a different tactic than u and gone with A.Cole Baines and Kompany in defence, Malouda as my expensive mid and RVP as my expensive forward. Does give me less captain choices though so might have to rethink!

Kompany, Huges, A Cole, Simpson, Orr
N Zogbia, Malouda, Taarabt, Barton, Sessegnon
    Carrol, Holt, RvP

I like my defence, but I am looking for some changes in the midlefield maybe...
Barton or Sessegnon for Moses and somebody...???? Or something else.... Opinions please!!
