In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

          I'd say so.

It's not like they can start the season without replacing Young & Downing.

Selling Downing and getting N'Zog in seems a really shrewd piece of business for me.

I've got Hughes already. Not really been looking at Bardsley, I think I'd try and get one of the 4.5m Sunderland defenders.

Jagielka is certainly an option, as is Rafael although his rotation possibility means I probably won't go for him.

Personally, i don't think it matters who he's playing, 99 times out of 100, arsenal will score at least one goal per game, and 99 times out of 100, RVP will be involved, so should return enough points.

Also, don't particularly rate Liverpool's defence, and it'll be interesting to see whether Man Utd's traditional defensive 'wall' falters a bit without Van Der Sar marshalling it.

I think Sessegnon is the best shout if you do go for RVP/Aguero or another expensive forward, seeing as he's on fire in pre-season and pretty much playing as a forward. You could always have Aguero and save a million to upgrade to RVP/Rooney a few weeks in.

Agreed, Clichy should start more though.

Apart from Kompany all other defensive postions are doubled up..

cue 7 days of RMTs with them included.

Kolarov is the new Kuyt for me: won't get him in, even if he earns big points, as I'll never believe it'll continue.

Even if he has four assists today, I still wouldn't consider him. Kompany is the right choice in every way, and I'm certainly not doubling up.

    Guys, Nani or N'Zogbia?
Do you think Nani will get rotated?

Hmm ok, N'Zogbia it is then.
And what about Aguero? Do you think City will rotate him?.
My team is like this atm:

      Given

A Cole Distin O Shea / Enrique Robinson

Sinclair Taarabt N'Zogbia VDV / Moses

      Graham Rooney Aguero

I can't imagine a £38 million signing being left a the bench, but I guess we're through the looking glass now.

Still, he's in my draft as it stands.

I have to say I see this season being about the strikers. I don't see much value in midfield for players in the 8m+ range, and I will be starting the season with all midfielders 7.5 or less.

Jarvis, Barton, N'Zogbia, Brunt, Etherington, O'Hara, Pennant, Kalou, Henderson and Coleman look the best to me at that price.

Did anyone spend a lot of time considering A.Cole (start of season) and Baines (2nd half of season), but never actually got them in, and then regretted it after every big score. Then the cycle continued, consider them again but never get them, then regret it.

And yet I still haven't made many teams with either of them in this season 🙂

This talking at half time between these 'experts' is pathetic, they know nothing, they're talking gibberish. One of them surely has special needs.

Any changes that are a MUST do you think?

No such thing as a must at this stage - don't let anyone tell you otherwise 🙂

I understand that VDV is a doubt, so that's worth keeping an eye on. Aside from that, all I'd say is that your defensive subs are a little pricey and if you downgrade you could reinvest in midfield a little bit.

Henry wanted to play the 2nd half for Arsenal but the ref didn't allow it becasue it's against the rules. Ridiculous.
