In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

Do we think Baines is going to continue his scoring of last season??
Everton never start well but Baines still ended up the 5th highest point scorer last season and at 8m i'm beginning to think it's worth the money as surely Baines + a 5.5m midfieler is better than a 5.5m defender and an 8m midfielder.
Thought I had my team sorted but now Baines is annoying me lol

I've put him in this morning:

      Given Ruddy
      Baines Komps Ivan Simps Briggs
      Silva Sess Sinclair Moses Marvauex
      RVP Bent Zamora

1m in the bank for Silva to Mal GW2

the only problem with that is that there are hardly any good midfielders for below 6m...in fact there are no good midfielders for less than 6m...however there are plnety of good midfielders for 8m or less and plenty of good defenders for 5.5m or less.

So by getting baines you are condenming yourself to a terrible risky 5.5m punt in mid.

By avoiding Baines you can get two proven pts scorers. Baines is good..but is he as good as two good players?

Denial's team proves that you have to take loads of risky punts to squeeze baines in. No offence DEnial...its just great timing that you posted that.

        Ruddy
        Briggs
        Sinclair
        Moses
        Marvauex

all big risks....better to just have two risks and upgrade three of those potential bosellis.

Yep - this is a very good post. It's so easy to get lost in specualation around those players. One or two punts is worth it, having half a dozen is risky.

It's a good point you make Jonty. I may be still thinking in terms of last season - I didn't get Baines in at all and he routinely killed me! It really is coming down to .5's now + guessing which of these 5.5/6/6.5 mids is worth having.

I think the problem is that you have too much money in defence. Ivan-Kompany and Baines is a luxury...i'd maybe ditch Ivan if you want Baines.

that should free up a bit of cash and then you can get some more familiar cheaper pts scorers in mid.

Perhaps consider O Hara or BArton instead of Marveuax.

No, it does make a difference, since if 50% of people already have a player, there is far less room for rises (there are fewer people who can potentially transfer that player in)

    Ok. Considering my strike force.

    A. Moses, Malouda, Barton, Nzogbia, Silva
    Rooney, RVP, Holt

The benefits with A is that i cover 4 of 5 top teams im considering. The problem is I dont have Suarez or any other liverpool player. I believe Liverpool will perform good this year.

Thats where my plan B comes into play.

    B. Moses, Young, Barton, Dyer, Silva
    RVP, Suarez/Carroll, Torres

Plan B gives me coverage of all the 5 top teams. Both City, Arsenal and Liverpool has the best cover i can get considering rotation, proven players and so forth.

The problem is that United and Chelsea, arguably the top 2 teams is getting covered by players that many consider and may well be rotation risks.

I think that Young will get a considerable amount of playing time. As will Torres. But will Torres perform and who to pick between him and Drogba? And is it safe to not have Roonpig? Hes on penaltys and will play 90 minutes more often than not.

The final issue with plan B is that my midfield is kind of weak. I dont like that and I am beginning to resign to the fact that perhaps I cannot cover all eventual possibilities.

    Need some feedback here please.

      Can't have it all 🙂
Imo don't worry about "covering" certain teams for the sake of it. If suarez isn't fit for sunderland I won't be getting any pool. After that game he'll have a run of 3 tough away games in the next 4. As will city. Not touching arsenal either until gw4

Taarabt is a form player, I had him in the Texaco championship fantasy, and he used to go through really good patches but also some awful runs.
QPR dont have the depth to carry on if Taarabt is playing poor, so they will soon slide to the bottom, and I cant see him gritting his teeth and fighting.

    Given; Al Habsi
    Briggs; Kompany; O'Shea; Gibbs; Taylor
    Moses; Taarabt; Sessegnon; Downing; Malouda;
    Bent; Graham; Suarez

Obviously, things will change in the lead up and I may want to bring in Foster for Al habsi depending on price and consider switching Taarabt for Ephraim; Briggs for Angel; and Malouda for someone who will actually play but as a starting point....hows it looking?

I think Suarez may be rested for the first week or two.
Few too many risks in there for my liking.

Taarabt although class is in an unproven team, Malouda may not get as many starts this season - but we won't know until the season is underway.

Who are you likely to captain?

I'd like to see at least one naied on big hitter. RVP/VDV would be my choices, so if bent is not delivering you have other options. Then Swap Bent for Suarez once he is starting games.

Man Utd could keep the most cleanies but only if Ferdinand and Vidic stay fit all season, whenever one of them is out they're a much shakier prospect and that isn't true for Chelsea or City.

Despite all the generic RMTs, I actually think there's going to be more variation in teams this season than last. For example, Moses is in every RMT, but only 1.3% of teams. The price structure is excellent, there's no one who really stands out as massive value and it's very hard to get more than a handful of traditional names in.

Yep loving the new pricing system. It seems like they've rolled out much more mid price options to ensure variety in people's teams. In the past it's been a few cheap "enablers" in most teams which let everyone afford the same essential big guns. Much tougher decisions to be made this time.

I know the rule is never Captain a defender but is Baines an exception? QPR and WIG look like fixtures with both a good chance of a CS but also of attacking returns. Think it's worth splashing out on 8 million for a defender if they're a reasonable captain choice.

    Given, Ruddy
    Kompany, Acole, Orr/Briggs/Gabbidon, Simpson, Bramble
Malouda, Sinclair, Sess, Ohara, Ephraim/4.5 starter
    RVP, Rooney, Zamora

will be playing kompany and acole all the time, and one of those 3 def.
can easily do malouda to VDV or Silva if anyone of them performs well.
RVP and rooney are both penalty takers and are quite fixture proof IMO.

What are peoples thoughts of having 3 really expensive defenders and then 2 defenders priced at 4.

    Baines A.cole Kompany Briggs Simpson

These players each played at least 37 out of 38 games last season so I should be able to play them every single week. Maybe not knompany if he was away to united and simpson home to norwich but you get what I mean.

Sinclair Moses and Dyer are unlikely to be good choices to play week in week out.
Hence 5 players in your team are fighting for 3 bench spots.

Downground one of your defenders and upgrade at least one of the others. Some sensible 5.0 defenders to go with the two expensive ones. Baines and Acole are worth their price tags though

The problem with Hangeland is that you need him to score goals to get those points. He may have scored 6 last season, but only 1 and 1 in the two previous. I'd be much more confident of Chelsea knocking up the clean sheets than Hangeland knocking in the goals.

Consistency probably wasn't the right word to use, reliability may be better.

The issue isnt really how they perform over the entire season, is it? Nobody is saying you cant sell Cole at some later stage in the season.

Given their matches in GW2 and 3, even a short term punt on Cole may prove worthwhile. With Hangeland, relying on goals for points, you kind of have to stick with him through the ups and downs to get that benefit.
