In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

Just a great comeback from England. not only have they overturned the deficit but they've done it at pace too. Put us in the driving seat now and looking like another win.

Well of course, as there's 2 days to go but rarely does a 4th innings chase down the kind of lead we have. Still 4 wickets to go, Broad has been looking good with the bat and we are 341 ahead already.

    RMT:

    Al-Habsi (Ruddy)

    Hughes, Cole, Hangeland, Kompany (Simpson)

Toure, N'Zogbia, Malouda (Barton + Tiote)

    Rodallega, Suarez, Bent

Pretty happy with it - need to be confident of Suarez starting though. Being a Wigan fan, I really want to captain Rodallega since he's got a great first three games - will probably end up opting for Suarez if he does start though.

Cheers. That's my main worry in the team to be fair, trying to get Chelsea coverage but I could well get more points with a different player.

Had VDV originally but his first three fixtures aren't too great and now he's got some injury worries so it's a tough one. Thought about Silva too but already got Toure so might not be a great idea.

Will probably see how things progress until before the start of the season and decide then!

Moyes seems to be building his team AROUND a fullback. Baines is a defensive liability, especially with his runs forward.

Personally, I think Everton can play better football through Osman or Arteta or Cahill, but everthing runs through Baines now.

Champions League starts 4 weeks into the season and there is sure to be rotation, they have away league games after all there CL matches too! I have Kompany and Silva at present, not risking any others. Tempted by Aguero but they have 4 strikers at present all pushing for starts.

I like it...quite similar to my team:

      Given // Al-Habsi
      Kompany // Cole A // Simpson // Hughes // Brown W
      Malouda // N'Zogbia // Sinclair // Moses // Taarabt
Van Persie // Bent // Holt
      Plus £0.5m in the bank

Pretty standard, looks well set up. Just keep an eye out for Malouda & Suarez, which I guess most of us will be doing.

Only issues I see is no City & Villa attacking coverage. But cant have it all I suppose.

Aguero instead or RVP? RVP will get injured at some point and Aguero has a good run of fixtures at the start...Watch the Community Shiled and see if he starts then for more reliability. Also save you 1.0 for elsewhere in your team. You have N'zog for Villa so no probs there.

And when is "at some point?"

RVP may not get injured all season, unlikely but it could happen. He's also a proven prem goalscorer. I do think Aguero might be worth a punt, especially if Tevez goes but not sure if I'd want him in at the expense of RVP.

Hey, I would love to place a bet with you for £100 that RVP will not play the season with no injury... You are very optomistic my friend. He's been at Arsenal for 7 seasons. In order, here are his number os appreances:
            26
            24
            22
            15
            28
            16
            25

In a 38 game season when you're first choice if fit that ain't consistancy!

Which is why I said it's unlikely. I still think not picking him because he may get injured at some point isn't great thinking for someone who will score consistently when he isn't injured.

Sure but RVP's opening fixtures don't compare with Man city's either. RVP has both Liverpool and Man United in the first 5 GWs. I just think City (and Chelsea) have more appealing fixtures. i might buy into RVP at some point but there's a nice selection of class forwards this year to choose from and so it's better to play the fixtures rather than the reputation...

the point is tho, that RvP is fit now. and when he has been fit, he's been pretty consistent on field. excluding him because he might get injured in future is putting the cart before the horse no?

Maybe, but City have better fixtures for the first 5 GWs.

Not sure about Mal. He will def get rotated this year. A lot of money for a midfielder who won't play every game...

From what people have been saying and I agree with it u need chelsea attacking coverage. You could say the same thing about rotation for every other chelsea attacker other than Lampsard who is priced at 12mil and will be playing deeper than before. So malouda is the best option

I see your point but based on pre-season, I'd keep an eye on benayoun. I got badly burnt with Mal getting rotated last year. Lamps is a cert but if you're willing to risk roatation why not risk a 7.0 investmant for benayoun instead of Mal at 10.5

    Given // Ruddy
    Kompany // A Cole // Orr // Alcaraz // Simpson
    VDV // Ferguson // Silva // Sessagnon // Taarabt
Van Persie // Zamora // Suarez

I remember SWP playing for England. I forget who was commenting, but he said something like...

"The towering Shaun Wright Philips wins the header".

    Cracked me up.

Like it - you'll need Everton to buck their trend for slow starts, but nice to see some variety.

Well Baines would be the preferable choice. Everton's defence has been a bit hit and miss in recent seasons and they also seem to have a tendency to start slow.
