In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

On the subject of United strikers....

if wellbeck wasnt going to get the game time he would have been loaned out again, but fergie has said he wants to keep him in the squad, he has also said that he expects Owen to be given more opportunites (and why not given his goals/minutes played record for us??)

diouf and macheda will surely go out on loan again, or given his poor showing on loan (lost his place after a couple of games for Parma, and then they were relegated) he might leave for good.

Personally i think Berbatov could / should leave.
He seems to have figured in the pre-season tour much less than the other strikers, and while he IS a to player i just dont see how or where he fits in.

If we sell this summer, we can still claim a decent fee for him (£15-£20m?), next summer we would get a lot less.

Fergie is the master of managing, motivatind and utilizing a large squad but he even he knows that 5 strikers in the first-team squad is 1 too many.

Just because Welbeck is being loaned out doesn't mean he will get a lot of game time. Maybe in other competitions but probably not much in the league.

Can't see us getting £20m for Berbatov. Maybe 15, but at his age probably not a lot more.

Because you have Rooney, Chico and berbatov. Not saying he won't play but I don't think he will play THAT much. Maybe a lot in Carling Cup, FA Cup, but not prem

Berba is class. I'd much rather Owen, Diouf and Macheda went before him (Diouf on loan, other 2 sold). That would leave 4 strikers in the first team squad comprising Rooney, Chicharito, Berbatov and Welbeck. 2 young guns are enough with a lot of forward talent coming up from the youths.

Can someone please explain the love for Shay Given as a fantasy GK? 68% save ratio over his last 4 seasons; playing behind a defense that was joint 14th in goals conceded with only 7 CS; his new team is in a bit of a transition period. Seems like there are better options available at 5.0 (Schwarzer, Begovic, Robinson, Jaask) or even 4.5 (Al-Habsi, Hennessey).

Confidence in Villa is more down to their defensive minded manager - and the fact that they were seriously screwed over by injuries last year.

I'm more than happy to invest in their defense (and keeper) - and with such good fixtures I don't think doubling up is beyond the question.

Right i've finally settled on my Fulham / Villa def/gk.

I think Dunne is a far better shout than Hughes. Like O'Neil, Mccleish will have a lot of emphasis on big men for the set pieces so I can see him grabbing a few goals like Ridgewell, Johnson and Dann of past seasons.

Also Schwarzer v Given is practically even, but Given picks up little niggly injuries now and then so I think Schwarzer just shaves it.

How are most of you lining up your back 5 this year?

So.....kind of a strong high value defense/strikers with an even approach on your mids, makes sense given the value gap in the middle this year. I'm just finding it hard to settle on an average priced middle, just seems so wierd compaired to last year but it might be the best thing to do.

People are suddenly including Benayoun in their RMTs all over the place, and I don't really see why. Because of some pre season games? Owen has been scoring quite a few, but that doesn't mean he is anywhere near the first team. Sure, AVB might like him, but he's definitely a big rotation risk and not a proven player at Chelsea. Downgrading Malouda for him as suggested here earlier - I don't know.

Struggling so much this year and atm have the following potentially ludicrous team. Please advise!

    Given, Ruddy

    Kompany, Ivanovic, Gibbs, Warnock, Kelly

    Malouda, Silva, Sinclair, Tchoyi, Moses

    Carroll, Bent, Holt

    Need help!!!

You've overspent in defense for sure - not sure Kelly offers value - and might be tempted to downgrade to three 4 mil defenders who rotate well to go with Kompany and a Chelsea defender (might be worth going for Cole - no point seeing Ivanovic stuck on the bench once you've invested 7mil in the guy).

If you can free up a bit of cash at the back then you should be fine to upgrade a bit upfront.

When Kuyt grab a bit of form at the end of last season, can anyone recall is position? Was it off of Suarez or on the right wing?

      No captaincy choices.

Lacking in attack power, overly balanced. I'd look at making a few changes.
