In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

    How about this`?

    Given/Ruddy

    Kompany/Enrigue (if Liv)/Bramble/Simpson/Orr

    Malouda/Silva/Sinclair/Taarabt/Sessegnon

    Rooney/Holt + Bent/Torres/Aguero

This would mean I bench one of sinclair, taarabt or holt pretty much every week.

Can't wait for the season to start and people post sensible discussion threads.

Moyes seems like building a team on baines at the moment...and wit arteta put..i cant thnk of neone else ..yeha baines disturbs the equation of the team completly...But the price dis season are as such that u have to compromise in some area...i dont want to touch my defence for first 6 gamweeks only would take a chelsea defender looking opon who plays alongside terry and cole

I dont have tiote..i have barton only...my midfield is weak i knw...i am not getting the right combination...either to take baines or suffer or leave him seeing score tons :/

My biggest issue is no money in the bank :/

Any feedback on the following please to start GW1? I'm going with a bit of a squad approach so that I have a decent bench to rely on and rotate as needed. ie if Bosingwa doesn't start then Bardsley or Orr could come in.

Given/4.0 keeper (I'd play Given 95% of the time)

    Kompany/Baines/Bosingwa/(Bardsley/Orr)

    Malouda/Sessegnon/Taarabt/Moses-Norwich,home/(Sinclair-M.City,away)

    Van Persie/Suarez(waiting on news)/Holt

Wonder if Bosingwa will play 100%, you need 100% starters among your three main Def, actually all team members. I'd rather have a 100% starter from Wolves, than a 70% starter from Chelsea- who gets me one point for a partial game. IMO.

Major League Soccer (MLS) has something on there site where you pay a certain amount of money and you can watch any team all year and I'm looking for something simlular for the EPL.

I don't think he will sign for them. If he did he would be at the very least 10.5, more likely 12. Could take some time to settle in to the Prem too, so not sure I'd splash that much on him. Though I have picked Aguero so a little hypocritical there.

In a way I'd like him not to sign, I really like the look of Cleverley (as a player, not a FPL prospect this season) and if Sneidjer comes it might take longer for him to have a run in the side. We need our young talent (Cleverley, McEacheran, Wilshere etc) to get a good run of games going so we can finally ditch the underperforming Gerrard and Lampard et al, from the England set up.

Thing is, who are Utd replacing? Scholes didn't play much last season and Utd still had a very good season. They've added Young, and have Cleverley back on loan. P.Jones can also play CM and im certain Anderson will have a bigger role to play. I don't think they'll get anyone, maybe in January.

I'm not sure it's a case of replacing an individual, surely he fits into most world class starting 11s?
Plus with the neighbours spending fortunes there has got to be some fretting at Old Trafford about squad depth (not to mention sheer money spent).
I can see him joining, and being pretty integral...

Doesn't have what it takes huh? He was man of the match last night playing against a midfield consisting of Busquets, Thiago and Iniesta.

He's got excellent understanding of the game, good passing and is a goal scoring threat. I think he'll have a big part to play this season as will Bruno Welbeck.

If Utd play the same formation they did last season i would say forget Sneijder and buy Lass Diarra.

Very big if. I would say 10m, same as Young, Nani and VDV. United have a pretty tough opening run of fixtures though. Don't think i'll be tempted.

I think he'll be one for deadline day- if Fergie wants him he'll get him IMHO.

      Probable price 11.0 million.

Think he would be 11 and that would tempt me. Magnificent player.

Think cleverley and welbeck have zero chance to make it at united.

To succeed, you need a full squad at the beginning until things settle, you need a squad that can play 4-4-2, 3-5-2, 5-2-3 etc. Only from this platform can you progress without wasting your wildcard. There's too much dross in all these RMT's. it does seem a bit trickier this year (which is good), as the pricing does force a balance between having a choice of captains, and having cheap, playing players.
Thankfully my team is near perfect, until tomorrow...

Def is way too heavy. luiz has been widely shot down cuz apparently he's not a sure starter, although the Alex injury helps. Skrtel's fixtures are poor. Kompany is ok. There are better budget options that Simpson.

Liverpool midfield has a ton of rotation risk. Would hold off on Brunt until his fixtures improve. Suarez for the same reason. RVP faces rotation risk due to tough fixtures and UEFA qualifying.

I was reading that in the injury news section of this site. he isn't playing much in the preseason because of an injury, and he is pretty much facing chronic injury.

    RMT

    Al-Habsi/Given
    Bardsley/Hughes/Kompany/Orr/Alcaraz
    VDV/Kalou/Duff/Taarabt/Sinclair
    Bent/Rooney/Rodallega

    Was thinking...
    1. VDV>Malouda cuz of fixtures and VDV knock
    2. Kalou>N'Zogbia to avoid rotation risk.
    3. Rodallega>Zamora because N'Zogbia has left, but Wigan are playing the promoted sides...
