In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

Valencia, Nani, Young. The three of them are the reason I can't pick any of them to start with. But of the three Valencia could do a 'Nani' and end up at 10m by the end of the season.

I don't feel comfortable with that arrangement either but If I ditch Valencia (Who SAF loves) who else should I get. I already feel I have enough budget midfield coverage I just need another mid - high range one. If Chelsea don't buy then maybe Benayoun but Ive really got nothing.

Midfield is where I'm most conflicted too right now. Like I say Valencia is definitely the choice of the three for value, there is a question about Nzogbia who is the other option becuse he's not really been getting a pre-season run as his transfer dragged on.

    gw1 team is this

    Given

    Baines, Kompany, Orr

    VDV, Nzogbia, Taarabt, O'Hara

    Rooney, RVP, Holt

    (Moses, Simpson, N Taylor)

    my problem is this:

cant choose between Holt or Moses.
Holt proven for his team, but not in the PL.
Moses buzz growing and how often am i going to use him if not at home to Norwich?

    Thoughts?

I'd play both and drop O'Hara personally. Got to play Moses and Holt is a penalty taker and all round focal point. If Norwich start well Holt will likely start well. Of course i am a little bias seeing as Wolves are up at Ewood

          Cech
          Kompany Bramble Give
          Malouda Sinclair Sessegnon Moses
          Van Persie Bent Rooney

I picked Chech over Cole because I WILL play Cech ALL season and Cech has outscored Cole every season (interesting for me). As I said its different and I think it could work.Malouda could rotate with VDV and Bent with Suarez when fit

lol I did that last year and its not as hard as you think, the only person that won't play is Ferguson the rest can limp off the bench if needed . My TEAM has enought hitters that most likely will do the business and rise in value on my team so I am honestly not worried at all,you guys can 'balance ' your teams and beanch and maybe it might work maybe it won't. I can tell you I rather have a very strong team than 18pts on my bench hoping someone doesn't play

that should inherently mean my midfield is rubbish, but i think its good enough to not burn me until i figure out the "must haves" in a week or two.

so you can afford both. If i had to pick one id go rooney. not my a large margin but slightly better fixtures, not the risk of injury right out of the gate like RVP can be.

I had Given and Ruddy until this morning.

After doing some rudimentary rotation analysis using the season ticker and looking at last season's Championship results, I reckon Given and Kenny are a much better option if you can find the extra 0.5M.

Drogba did well for me GW1 last season but hasn't looked very sharp since he caught malaria or in pre-season so far. Also too much of a rotation risk for me.

      Hope that helps.

I'd love Given and Kenny, but in the end decided to stick with Ruddy for two simple reasons. The .5 is vital to my team, and secondly, Ruddy covers the bad fixtures for Given perfectly at the start, and since I don't double up, it allows me to have Orr/Gabbidon who I can play alongside Given when both have good fixtures, and also I see QPR 4.0 defenders as by far the best value, cant see any other at that price I'd want.

              Hi BMB. LTNS!

I reckon that Given/Kenny is a better combo up until the first WC but if you really need the money then I can understand that.

I'm starting with Aggers, RVP and Holt. May be good, may be a travesty beyond belief. 🙂

                How's it going Horizontal?

I have no idea when I'm going to WC though, that's the thing. It'll be when my team starts looking sh*te. I'll play Given most weeks, and when he has outright bad fixtures Ruddy has nice fixtures.

Similar frontline to mine, but swap Holt for Odemwinge. I've got high hopes for that frontline. But who knows.

I'm planning to hold my wildcard until as late as possible, which probably means GW4 judging by past experience.

Can't afford Odem but have Olsson for WBA coverage. My front line may change after this weekend's Charity Shield though if Aggers fails to perform. Will have to wait and see....

Good to know. I'm off to bed after this post since I do have a relatively early start (by my standards).

I usually hold my Wildcard for a while, I think it was GW11 last year, and I'd say I normally get that far at least. Was easier to make it earlier last year with the second one there.

Odem is gonna be good for me I reckon this year, not many people on here seem to be interested though. I built my team around RVP Odem and 10m striker. Had to do some re-jigging for Aguero but I'm hopeful he'll be worth it. Will keep a close eye on the Community shield though.

Anyway I'm off to bed now, hopefully we can have some good discussions before the new season, and I'll show you my whole team if you're lucky 😉

I think you might be being optimistic.... City is a minefield. I have had Silva in my team for most of the squads I've knocked together because I want some attacking cover from them, and I reckon he's fairly safe, and Aguero surely will be too, but I don't know about Balotelli/Dzeko. Then you've potentially got Milner coming into the equation, and Mancini sounds like he's after another winger.

      Minefield.

I'm with you there... will still have to squeeze him in at some point though! I think Liverpool will have a really good season, and he's going to be a must-have whenever he's fit.
RVP-Bent-Suarez is my ideal front three I think, but just not sure I can manage it because I'm quite keen on a strong defence (Baines, Kompany, Hughes and Cech) too, which leaves me with 30.5m for my midfield. Which really isn't enough!

OK, I give up, please can I get some advice as I am going in cricles!

    Given Kenny
    Ivanovic Kompany Orr (Simpson Brown)
    Silva Malouda Ephraim N'Zogbia (Sinclair)
    VanP Suarez Holt

    My thoughts:
    1) I learned last year it is pointless bringing in a player for 1 week, as injuries/suspensions stuff your plans
    2) I am not keen on Ephraim, maybe a better cheap combo that rotate
    3) The ones I have bolded (if the html works) are not up for discussion.

Pretty good team. Of the bolded players I would just say keep an eye on Ivanovic, by no means guarenteed to play.

I'd suggest Suarez won't play for at least GW1 probably GW2 so may be best to start with Bent instead of him and then change up once he's in the team.

Ephraim is a risk, perhaps look for someone like Surman at Norwich or Dyer at Swansea. The situation for these players needs to be monitored as we head into GW1 though for sure.

Perhaps Brown -> Bramble as Brown is an injury waiting to happen which will only interfere with your plans.

Cech, Terry, Lampard, Benayoun unless a playmaker is bought, Malouda and one of Torres or Drogba, Drogba in my opinion will start the Stoke game for his defensive aerial abilities as I've said and I think AVB has been impressed wiht Ivanovic in pre season, I cant see any other left back than Cole playing and Kalou/Anelka/Sturridge (if hes not loaned) will be rotated more than anyone, AVB isnt a huge fan of rotating the defence but does like to mix up the attack.

Do you reckon he may give a shot to Luiz and Boswinga will get a good go this year as AVB will know a decent amount about them as both played in portugal before joining chelsea!

Bosingwa has looked better in pre season than I've seen him in a while, as he's a more natural 'RWB' so to speak I think yes he'll get some game time, Ferreira too, Ivanovic may well see more time at CB than last season. Terry and Cole are the only ones I'm comfortable will keep their places at the back but AVB wont be scared to take Terry out of the team if he's not playing well, Terry will know this and so I'm confident he will play well becasue he hates not playing, I doubt the portugal connection will sway him, I'm sure he'll be aware Luiz is mistake prone, Bosingwa is inconsistent and Alex is injury prone, so I'd rank the defence: Terry, Cole, Ivanovic, Alex, Bosingwa, Luiz, Ferreira, Bertrand in terms of FFL appeal. There are so many combinations he could go with its hard to say, best to see what he is happy with because odds are he'll stick to it.

very well said. Even with having Banayoun starting though, im still inclined to pick Malouda as he more of a goal threat. In a way he will be behind the spearhead striker and two wingers. But at 7, his price could sky rocket if he performs.

Exactly, Malouda is almost unrivalled for that left wing role, though thats not really where he plays when he's on the pitch so he's certain to get a lot of minutes, Benayoun is surely worth the gamble, but we've been linked with Kaka again, even though thats so unlikely for a lot of reasons, Modric could still happen but personally I think AVB is happy with our team. By GW4 there should be a clearer indication of the Chelsea team so I'd give it time.

Its like chess. YOu have to plan ahead. I usally pick 4 or 5 players who have great fixtures at home and away. Others players are just hopefull shots or a bandwagon.

I plan 6 weeks in advance, you have to plan thoroughly though, or injuries, suspension, form and fixtures really mess up your plans, I'd look 2-3 weeks ahead unless your willing to spend hours considering, or just know football very very very well, which I dont think many people do. It's not madness, you just have to take everything into consideration.

Yeah I do like to plan a few weeks in advance but early on its nearly impossible, theres always an injury or someone you dont have starts doing well and you need to get him in.
I actually think its better just to make plans week by week and not look too far ahead,

To be fair it's much easier to plan at the start of the season. By the last 10 weeks as players are being dropped and injured left right and centre its nearly impossible, however it depends on how your initial squad works out for you.

If you choose safe options or get lucky then planning may well work out for you. But I rarely plan more than a week or two in advance. It all works itself out as you go along I reckon. It's not like you can't carefully consider your decision week by week.

I agree luck plays a big part. For example I have Taraabt and Holt in my team and they fail me miserably I'm going to have to tranfer them out to avoid a big price drop and ruin the plans in the process

Then again you could get lucky and your team may all do reasonably well and you can make the planned transfer you want.

I really disagree. The beginning of the season is a completely fresh field of unknowns everywhere. Injuries happen anytime anywhere and aren't exclusive to the end of the season either. The beginning of the season it's harder I'd say to stay on your gameplan b/c discount players are yet to emerge into full view, and teams/players haven't show themselves to be in or out of form.

Towards later in the season, planning 5-6 ahead is a much easier affair for me. You have double gameweeks to aim at, you have the chance to search out players who have been sold off early in the season and had price drops, in order to pick them up before a good fixture run.

Last season, about week 15-18, i started keeping a running chart on a giant whiteboard in my computer room, planning out transfers and perceived lineups, etc, that ran a 6-week span. But at the season's start, you sometimes have to follow the crowd and make sure your team value doesn't get decimated.

Arsene didnt play him against boca or Red bulls because he isnt 100% right mentally... i know he is probably torn but if arsenal accepted a bid im sure he'd go without question. not yet. the potential is obvious i just couldn't believe the over-reaction from that goal. that goal and having a world cup winning dad and suddenly he was linked with man utd in the papers the next day. he's scoring some great goals since to help sway my view, however in the actual euros i'd actually argue he was only the thrid best member of his own midifeld behind mata and the defensive mid from bilbao, martinez?

Yeah, Thiago was lighting up the group stages in my view though, played some great football. Martinez looks to be a great player, wouldnt mind him at United. He'd cost a lot though, especially as he plays for Bilbao.

to be fair i never said thiago didn't play well, my initial point was i didn't think he was as good as mata which considering i thought he ws the best player in the tournament isn't really a criticism. it's like saying rooney is rubbish because he's not as good as messi, he clearly isn't. thiago fascinates me as so many of his attributes almost suggest he shouldn't be a centre mid. he's quite explosive and loves a trick and due to how ambitious a lot of what he tries doesn't look as consistent as your typical barca central mid. he's interesting. almost closer to a nani than a xavi yet plays in a similar position.

You can just get every player to pay their money into an escrow account if you don't trust the people to stump up the cash at the end of the season.

If you don't know how escrow works then just google it. It's the safest way to prevent yourself from being ripped off by people who you can't give a good slapping to if they don't pay up. 🙂
