In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

I think Gerrard being injured for at least a month into the season brings Kuyt into the mix so

VDV or Kuyt both on pens so who would you choose and why?

i wonder if people are raving about suarez over carroll partly because he's pleasing on the eye.

Carroll averaged more points per minute when he was fit than suarez last season. Liverpool have bought a winger who can cross... It seems like the reason he was bouhght was to get the best out of carroll.

Remember, as well as scoring from headers, carroll can knock down the ball from a cross to assist someone else. Also he has a reasonable shot. Basically - Carroll is direct - most of his touches are aimed at creating or scoring. He'll be in a central position all game.

Suarez will drop deeper/ wider and make some mazy dribbles which is great from a football perspective but not necessarily from a fantasy football perspective.

Downing was bought to change liverpool's style slightly and i can see more assists coming from headed knock downs than intricate through balls

Bent is a pure striker. That's all he does. Not really an assist merchant, keep that in mind.

Best option in the Villa team is N'zogbia. A source of goals & assists. Who, is a little undervalued (price wise) in my view.

N'Zogbia also gives you points exposure to clean sheets. He was fairly reliant on bonus points last season. How he fares this season with the E.A thingy remains to be seen.

Please don't mistake me. I'm not telling you to kick Bent out for N'Zogbia, merely a few crumbs to mull over.

"Bent is a bad choice"? 17 goals last season, 24 the season before.... over the last 5 seasons he's averaged 14.4 goals a season, and that includes time spent at Charlton and in a Spurs team where he didn't always get a match.

          Darren Bent scores goals.

      Yes.

Its still Villa. Choose either one of Nzog and Bent. I picked nzog based on value for money. Bent is to expensive. In the region of 10mil u got Suarez and Carroll both in a better team with maybe not as good fixtures but potential to win against every team. They are the long term pick.

But you'd rather allow for one random injury.

Last game of last season i thought i could field 11 with 1 sub but it turned out 2 of my players got injured pre-match

and then to add insult to injury coleman and sturridge got sent off, all my defenders conceded, and 2 of my rival's defenders scored so he could overtake me from 2x points behind

Oh and i had nani who started and hit the bar but got 2 points GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

The Scout's projections have RVP ahead of the Roonpig. RVP was the first on my teamsheet. His scoring record last year was dependable from a ff perspective.

Tevez is a bit of a mystery. Silva looks a must have to me and I'm really surprised he's in so few teams. 😕

For me, the best front 3 are: RVP, Zamora and Suarez.

Just always worries me when I don't have any ManU cover.

Roonpig does look in menacing form though and should get lots of crosses in from Young/Nani/Valancia.

Silva- I think most are going on EA stats of last season and are preferring the cheaper yaya option.

Difficult to look past city opening fixture for a capt, but I'd prefer Tevez(c) > yaya or silva.

It seems we agree on a lot of things 😛

RVP - Showed last season that he can hit the form to justify his pricetag and more

Rooney - showed TWO seasons ago that he can justify the pricetag (When he is playing as a lone striker in the centre)

Showed LAST season that he isn't being used as a main goalscorer but in a supporting role which can vary from in the hole to midfield... YES, midfield, which was explicitly mentioned by scholes and fergie recently!

People are falling in love with the name an reputation when they pick rooney, but his role has evolved a lot in a way which is good for manchester united but bad for fantasy football

Silva - look at his form at the end of last season. He was in a lot of teams.

Zamora is there for the fixtures. Hard to gauge form in one off qualifiers at the start of the season imo. He still has a decent scoring record though. Injury is my concern.

It's basically weight your strikers heavily or your mid. Why not downgrade roonpig slightly (if saha's fit he'll be a shout this year) and upgrade your mid. That's 4.5, add the dyer downgrade in gives you another 1.5. Upgrading the mid to a big player's now possible.

          ok i'll choose K

          1. I wouldn't pick aguero until you see him play a few times and confirm his role for man city/ his quality in the premier league

          2. i wouldn't pick torres because he will be rotating with drogba so is unlikely to be worth it (Remember playing consistently is a huge factor - name me a player who scores every other game in the premier league and i expect he'll be a player who plays every game too)

i don't think having no city offence is a risk anymore than having the wrong city offence.

What if city score loads of goals but aguero isn't involved? You didn't benefit from having aguero in that case.

Malouda is a slight risk too but i think less than aguero because it seems malouda is the first choice on the left for chelsea, and we know he can score big in the premier - added to the fact chelsea's fixtures are better than city's

aguero may well be a better choice but i'd rather assess him first

    Quick question for you all:

    A) RVP & N'Zogbia

    Or

    B) Silva & Bent

I currently have A, but having Silva in would give me another viable captain choice.

Rest of Attack is Aguero and Zamora.

One berth left in my front three.

Zamaora seems fairly attractive (not in the biblical sense). However, I'd prefer Suarez. May well hinge on whether Kenny gives the lad additional time off. Don't really want to be planning GW 2 transfers this early. Best laid plans & all that.

A front line of RVP, Agüero & Suarez gives plenty of captain material.

To be honest I'd say that Having Zog and Bent is a bit overkill Villa attack-wise. They have great fixtures but there are a few factors that would put me off a similar move:

Zog hasn't had much of a pre-season and might not be 100% come GW1. He also won't have played much with the squad.

Bent may well have less service than last season (Downing and Young gone) and his output may suffer.

McLeish has tends to prefer a defensive system with more emphasis on keeping it tight than attacking football.

I understand that Suarez my look fantastic against these random countries but lets be honest the spent 35 mill on Carroll and more twice thay bringing in players to service him. Carroll is gona play the same type of game as he did last season. being the target man who is great in the air strong and can finsh from anywhere i like to think of him as the white drogba. And last season his ppg were higher than suarez and he played 90% of his games in a weak newcastle team

Suarez is fantastic. Period. The price spent is irrelevant.

Carroll is a good Premiership striker, a target man. Whether he'll truly learn the skill of creating something from nothing remind to be seen. Suarez is approaching world class. He's able to create his own goals.

I'm fairly comfortable in saying this - Suarez will rack up more PPG this season than Carroll.

    Thoughts on malouda:

I think last season he did reasonably well but was rotated a bit and often subbed off.

The new manager has come in and it would seem likely he is thinking about the future of the chelsea squad. In this case the young(er) players like malouda should form the core of his team to allow for a transition in a season or two when drogba, lampard, terry etc. are queueing at the post office, wheel-barrows in hand, to collect their pensions.

I know if i was the chelsea manager i would see malouda as THE main man for my team. Players like him establishing himself could be key in allowing for a smooth transition

Plain Simple....we dont have neone else In the LW postion to start apart from Malouda..so i see him as a nailed on starter.:)
      AVB prefers a 4-2-1-3 position

For that 2 midfield position we have lampard, mikel, ramires
that hole behind striker has been key to avb's formation is porto...and i assume he would be doing the same over here..so that position is for benayoun\McEachran(if we dont buy ne AM or he isnt loaned out)
LW position is preety simple between Zhirkov and Malouda..and i think Malouda would get Nod ahead of Zhirkov

We also played in the diamond formation when both drogba and torres were in the field in 2nd half agaisnt villa recently...there malouda was playing tip of diamond...although notable thnk was lapmard was off and benyaoun was on.

So the only 2 option to leave malouda--
      1. We play diamond with both torres drogba on ad yossi playing tip of diamond
2.Zhirkov getting a nod ahead of malouda

And personally i dont think both the scenarios happening...so he is preety much nailed on for me 🙂

    Anyone care to RMT?

    Given (Ruddy)
    Kompany Hangeland Alcaraz (Simpson) (Wilkinson)
    Silva N'Zog Malouda Taraabt (Moses)
    Rooney(c)Suarez(vc)Holt

I'm not too happy about my DF or doubling up on Wigan players (I like Moses for 5.0 though). I have no money left for some lee-way to tinker once the season is under-way.

I like my MF though, especially Silva (looking good pre-season) and Malouda. City and Chelseas games look tasty early on.

Upfront I read some people saying Rooney is a questionable choice but I can see him having a hand in most of Utd's goals and playing 90mins. Suarez too should be fit for the first game of the season, we've still got 13 days remember and after his Copa heroics can Kenny afford to rest him? Carroll has looked slow and cumbersome all pre-season.
