In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

flip a coin. Both are great options.

For gw 1 I'm marginally swinging towards Nzog and RVP....but overall for first few weeks Malouda and Bent will probably mop up due to overall great fixtures.

ohara...you know what you get from him....good chance of assist or goal against easy opposition. Still got a great free kick on him. Wolves fixtures not terrible either.

sinclair....he is an unknown quantity. Could be great...could be a routledge.

the best advice among alot of great advice I have recieved on here is not to take too many punts on unproven premiership playes or players that have switched teams. Always look at the stats and use a bandwagon filter to ignore the unproven hype.

Ohara v sinclair is a perfect example of that.

If sinclair does well in the first two weeks, he may cost .1 more but you can always get him in after a week or so.

I did that with adam last season. I missed out on a couple of good weeks of pts hauls and he cost 0.1m or so more...but apart from his suspension he was a mainstay in my team for the rest of the season and more than delivered.

I wish I had had the same caution with boselli.

agreed. Week 1 is the time to have as many fixed starters as possible and bandwagons should be backed up with a little bit of actual premier league evidence rather than pure projection.

+42. I completely agree, and it does makes sense. It's not like Wolves have bad fixtures either, and O'hara has 4 years premiership experience on his side i guess.

My only punt from the promotion players is Taraabt, so treading with caution here.

I think i've finally decided on my team (until Aguero scores a hattrick next week and I want him in)!!!

    Given
    Kompany, Rafael, Hughes,
    Malouda, Silva (C), N'Zogbia, Moses,
    Rooney (VC), Bent Holt

    Ruddy, O'Hara, Brown, Simpson

really struggled between Rooney and RVP and Bent and Suarez but got feeling Suarez will be rested at start and Rooney will be main man with Hernandez sidelined for a few weeks.

    What's your thoughts guys??????

Not many if you're looking for some to score points rather than arm your bench. Outside bet might be Reo-Coker finding some form at Bolton for £4.5m But I'm going to keep an eye on Ben Arfa at £5.5m

I reckon I'm over thinking this now lol.

    Team is:

    Reina (Ruddy)

    Cole Hangeland Kompany Rafael Wheater

VDV Sinclair Moses (Sessegnon Reo Coker)

    Suarez Bent Zamora

Moses will most likely be changed to Sessegnon after the first game week. Suarez might go out for the first couple of game weeks, I have a mil in the bank so if he's not fit Carroll will go in.

Hey all, great to be back!

First play about with the squad has left me with the following -

    Given / Begovic
    Kompany / Rafael / Kelly / Alex / Cahill
    VDV / Sessegnon / N'Zogbia / Taarabt / Ben Arfa
    RVP / Zamora / Beckford

First thought is saving some cash on RVP and going with Gervinho (been impressed by him) and then using the 3m to upgrade...

Any thoughts on that bunch for a first go with view to numerous changes haha.

Ben Arfa is injured but when fit I think he's going to be a bargain at his price so definitely keep an eye on him. Defence has at least two rotation risks in Alex and Kelly. Rafael is seen as a risk by some here but I'm really not sure who they'll rotate him with -- the kit man perhaps?? I would definitely change Beckford. Still inconsistent and there are much more solid option at his price, like Kevin Davies. VDV is also dependent on injuries.

News from Mancini is that Aguro will start on the bench for the CS. Bad news for any managers hoping to gauge his selection for GW1 on his performance in this game.

I think with no news on a Tevez move and with Balotelli and Dzeko both on target against Inter it is just too big a gamble on Aguero for 11.0.

If Im going to gamble Id much rather do it on Suarez. Cheaper, better (arguably) and a guranteed starter (once question marks over his recouperation time from the Copa are over)

Do we reckon that Silva is worth the extra funds over Yaya? I'm seeing a lot of love for Silva and although I think he's a fantastic player I'm just not convinced he's worth his price tag as it stands, Yaya did pop up with a few goals etc towards the end of the season and I feel he might be worth the punt with funds being so tight...

I am not sure either is worth their prices. Silva does not score heavily enough for someone in that price bracket and Toure you can never be sure how he will play.
Aguero for me, assuming he is their one striker, will be my man City coverage (subject to daily changes!haha)

Aguero has too much competition for places and thus is WAY over-priced.

I'd definitely go for Silva over Yaya. I cant really put into words exactly why but I just get a bad feeling everytime I put him in my team and watch the 8.0 drain from my budget.

I'm not sure Yaya will play deeper but it seems to be a rumour that is gathering weight. Also Silva has looked decent in pre-season. especially against Inter most recently.

Current analysis I've seen floating around regarding the new bonus points is that it may favour the deeper lying midfielders, going off last season. So it might be that a deeper lying mid known for goal-scoring and being on pens might be a good shout.

Did I read Lamps might be playing deeper this year....

Silva is in my team on the basis of bonus points. As I understand it the OPTA numbers are based on all round play - successful passes, plenty of touches and he gets much more of the action than Yaya.

We need an article that highlights players that did well on OPTA last season and then consider their potential for goals and assists as well.

Wouldn't say 'definite', van Persie is their only nailed on starting forward. Gervinho will most likely be rotated with Walcott, Arshavin and Nasri on the wings.

unproven down the years, i'd class as a risk but he's the kind of player who needs to be best at the club. very direct, potential for assists and goal imo.

He'll take Dyer's spot and do it far more effectively. I was in a minority last time I said this, but I think he's better value than Sinclair at 5.0.

Yes, and it's a blessing for you. Dyer will whizz the ball over the halfway line nice and quick, but not get you any points. Routledge is a good signing for Swansea as he'll fit straight into the system but do it better.

    Morning lads.

Having toyed around with the likes of N'Zogbia, Marveaux, Zamora etc.I decided to try and do a top 4 team. Works out quite nicely I think...

    Given

    RAFAEL COLE KOMPANY Simpson

    YAYA NANI Sessegnon Moses

    DROGBA VAN PERSIE

    Subs: Ruddy, Wilkinson Tchoyi, Ba

My take on most people's RMTs is that they are more than happy to have 3 or 4 players who may have been injured for some of last season (Zamora), at a new club with a new manager (N'Zogbia) or at a promoted club and are unproven in the prem (Taraabt, Sinclair, Holt).

By sticking with the teams that ARE proven, I think you stand a much better chance of not having to make endless transfers on average players that aren't in form. I was very guilty of that last year, and especially at the start of the season there will be players that won't live up to their expectations. Just saying...

a good question. i had both but had given too, maybe too reliant on villa. bent is almost guaranteed goals, n'zogbia needs to settle. but they do have some amazing fixtures...

Depends on the rest of the team. I currently have Bent and not N'Zog. I'll probably end up the other way round though.

I like it, very similar to mine. I don't know if Lamps is worth the extra 1.5 over Malouda, it would be nice to have Moses over Dyer initially and although I like Bramble long term he's got a horrible GW1. I would consider dropping Lamps to Malouda amd having a bit of wiggle room elsewhere.

Lampard is extortionate at 12 mil. Only 12 mil midfielder I would ever get is a healthy, happy, in-from Cesc.
