In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

So, boys and girls which would you choose of these three starting out:

    Baines & Silva
    A.Cole & Van Der Vaart
    A.Cole & Silva

I keep swapping out Silva and VDV, driving me mental!

I think I have settled on my team for now . . .

    Given (Ruddy)
    Baines Kompany Alcaraz (Orr) (Simpson)
    VdV N'Zog Taarabt Moses (Sessegnon)
    RVP Suarez Zamora

    0.5M in the bank

I think I am going to wait out Aguero. If Suarez will not play GW1 I will go with Bent.

Would it be crazy to go all in on Wigan with Rodallega over Zamora? Planning on bringing in Odem GW3.

Gorkks might be off from the sounds of it... Orr is mentioned a lot on here. Don't know about the rest.

I'm keeping an eye on Caulker at Swansea- loanee from Spurs, highly rated centre-back, got a couple of goals whilst on loan at Bristol last year, 4m.

    Hey guys,

I seem to be one of the only ones who thinks this is a good defense:

    Kompany, Hughes, 4.5, 4.0, 4.0

to me, with higher prices, THIS is how you maximize what you can get from the actual pointscorers up front. But everyone seems to think Cole/Baines is necessary. Can someone talk me out of my thought....I'm not trying to be arrogant, I'm trying to see what I am missing.

I also am starting with Lampard. If I knew Malouda would start 100%, I would go with him, but I don't. Am I crazy?

I think everyone wants a slice of Chelsea defensive cover and Cole/Terry are the only bankers.
Baines ought to score as consistently as any midfielder in his price range.

Do whatever you think, it's boring having everybody choosing 15 man squads from only a pool of 40 or so players.

I know they want Chelsea defense cover....heck, I want it, too. But is it really worth a weaker front 8?

Baines will score well, I know this....but Everton start so very poorly

I don't even mind boring teams...espeically if its the prevailing thought on them being competitive.

          Yep I'm around.

I used to have your defense, but I was swayed to buy Cole for a few reasons.

          1. Chelsea's fixtures and defense look superb.
          2. Saving the money on Cole would not drastically improve me up top.
          3. Cole will be playing quite offensively under AVB's tactics.
          4. This is the big sway for me. If you look ahead, you will be playing Hughes for 6 weeks in a row because your other rotatable options don't have nice enough fixtures to cover his poor ones. There are no good alternatives at his price point either, and he offers no goal threat. Playing him every week for 6 weeks versus the likes of Cole or Baines will hurt you more than the money you spend up front.

On the subject of Norwich, anyone care to guess their midfield line-up? Hoolahan is your guaranteed option I guess, I'm just wondering about Bradley Johnson at 4.5m as an ultra-cheap option. Probably not going to set the Premiership alight, but he's a fairly attack-minded player.

Johnson's decent, was considering him myself but he's fairly prone to picking up yellows. Also it's hard to say if he'll be used in the cntre or out left (if at all) or if he'll just be a jack of all trade utility player.

He's been on my watchlist since day 1 though.

They used to play a 4-4-2 diamond but Bennett and pilkington (wingers) have come in so I'm guessing they'll change formation. Could mean a different role for hoolahan too though he may stay in the hole behind a lone striker. All speculation, they've been very busy signing mids 😕

    Interesting debate earlier on planning.

    What does everyone think?

I usually plan only 2 weeks at a time in terms of transfers, because you can only have 2 frees at any time.

But that doesn't mean when I'm choosing my players to transfer in, I only look two weeks ahead. So say I get Given and Ruddy, I look ahead all the way to GW 9 to see how Ruddy would cover Given.

Likewise with captains. I'm not looking to transfer Aguero GW 5 or something like that, but I do tally up to see who I would captain out of my current choices up to 8 weeks ahead.

I don't plan it too precisely. I keep a vague idea of which players have favourable fixtures and which teams i'll want players from somewhere down the line. I do it very vaguely at season and try and get players from loads of different clubs.

At the start of the season you can plan all you like and still get it wrong. There's no telling which players will hit form or how well the promoted sides will fare.
And you can plan all you like to buy or sell Aguero in GW X but there's no telling how he'll take to PL football, whether he'll take to it like Torres did, flop like Shevchenko, or find the pace tiring on his fitness and get subbed for the final 3o minutes of each match.

This time last season Scholes and Bale were raking in the points. Drogba and Malouda were essential, Newcastle were the safe promoted team while Blackpool who were expected to get the lowest EPL tally ever hammered Wigan.

I pretty much make transfers on the basis that the new player(s) will perform over the next 5-6 weeks.

But there's also something to be said for hopping on a bandwagon early in the season to increase team value. In those cases I may decide to transfer a player on a Saturday/Sunday night based on his potential price appreciation.

Well, I didn't do it last season, but am going to give that strategy a go this season because my mate was very successful with it. He caught up with me with 4 weeks to go and had such enormous team value that he could pick and choose for the last few GWs.

      The b*stard. 🙂

Yep. It was a big advantage I got early on with team value, and basically allowed me to stay in the top 100.

Yeah, you can't plan too intricately. I hate seeing teams where people have planned all their future transfers up to GW 4. That's never going to happen. In fact, I build my team with an eye to straight swap alternatives in case I get it horribly wrong.

Let me rephrase the Captain selection, only if it's a choice among too similar low priced players, you know the Cpt will start the first few weeks until things settle out. I don't mean to pick Terry over Cole for example based on Captaincy alone. This is kind of general advice, not for the experienced players who seem to post here the most.

Don't get Al-Habsi. Get Kenny instead.

Al-Habsi is a terrible choice. He has good fixtures the first three, but you'll only play him in the first one, and even then, I wouldn't be confident of a Wigan cleansheet. After that, he rotates terribly with Given, and he'd just be sitting on the bench eating up funds. Kenny would cover nicely for Given, and QPR are likely to be more solid at the back.

I already have Orr, so I can't get Kenny. Apart from GW4, Given and Alhabsi rotates perfectly right up until GW 12. By then Stoke's fixtures would have eased up, and I can get Begovic, who rotates perfectly with Given. My other cheap option is Ruddy, who is less likely to keep a cleanie that Alhab..Maybe I'm planning too much lol

Doesn't mean you can't get Kenny if you have Orr.

Given and Al-Habsi do not rotate well at all.

Who are you going to play GW 4 when Villa play Everton and Wigan play Man City away?

Norwich conceded a cool 30 goals at home, and 28 on the road.I'll take the risk with Alhabsi. I'm a fan on the cheap defense, but I think Kenny is stretching it a bit with that record. Reminds me of those who had Jara all season..he was cheap but literally worthless..

    Given ruddy
Kompany Hughes skirtel Simpson de laet
    Vdv silva Barton sinclair buzaky
    Rvp drogba Zamora

Now I have seen some pre-season action, tonight iv played
Around a little for the first time(instead of 50th time like last yr)
    I have done these changes
    Vdv>bale
    Skirtel>a cole(Ivanovic +0.5)
    Barton>Ramsey
    Buzaky>Moses

The only players I may be considering that I don't have already are
    Malouda and Suarez

Kolarov is a nightmare and you could drop him on cost alone, and I am not sure about Bale, haven't seen him in preseason.

Preserving any cash, gives you huge options when your team turns to jello or pudding in GW2.

Also, on DeGea, I would have the change button at the ready, if for some weird reason SAF doesn't start him.

Ramsay & drogba are far from sure starters. One norwich defender is too many, you've got 2. Bale is too pricey for consistent 2 point returns.

I'm sorry but People were righting off the drog at the start of last season
And look what happened... I decided to captain him in the first two weeks
with a total of 60+ points. My ONE Norwich defender will rot at the back of
My bench and onto bale... Have u seen any pre-season? He looks like a player

On Ramsey I saw him play today and was happy with the amount of times he popped
Up in the box so I'm willing to take the risk on him, plus wilshire possibly missing at the
Start only increases the reason for this gamble. Also on sess I just don't really see the
Appeal on Sunderland attacking players whatsoever as they won't score many goals

          Hmmmmm.....

Ruddy is just a playing for a relatively poor defensive side, so even though he rotates well with Given then Kenny is the better option as far as I can see. The Given/Ruddy rotation thing looks good but when you look at the supposedly easy fixtures where Ruddy can cover for Given then they look bloody risky to me.

If you're a stats person then take a look at this:

          http://soccernet.espn.go.com/stats/_/league/eng.2/year/2010/english-league-championship?cc=5739

And that 1.0M in the bank will be invaluable for wiggle room. Believe me.

Kalou is doubtful and I'm not convinced on Moses. Try to have only one doubtful player so you make it to GW3 without a transfer. Especially because the other six players should all start (Def and Tchoyi), but they are not the best or maybe not even the second best players on their teams at that position. (I may be wrong on Orr). IMO

Also, on AlHabsi- the worst thing is to have to change a backup goalie- it's about the last move you want to make. I am in the fewest 4 pt transfer camp though. So he's not bad at all, but you will live with him for months.

Captains are a problem. You don't have anyone good except RVP. Then there's the fact you're overly balanced. You need at least 3 captaincy options to make a good side imho. Also, strikers are where the points are. Stacking on midfielders will be costly for you because they're all hovering around the same price. Getting on the bandwagons of a Malouda or VdV will require two transfers, and you can't afford that.

Defense is overloaded as well. 3 big defenders is not a viable strategy early on, believe me. It's another case of having two players at a high price point which will require multiple transfers to make adjustments.

I keep reading posts from Fulham fans telling me that Briggs will lose his place as soon as Dempsey returns from injury.

So expect to have to transfer him out after a the first few GWs.

How does this look guys (the 4m defenders/keepers I'll decide on nearer to the season start when I've got a better idea of line-ups) ... Suarez obviously depends on whether he's likely to start the season.

    Cech, [4m keeper]
    Baines, Kompany, Hughes, [4m], [4m]
    Silva, N'Zogbia, Barton, Sinclair, Sessegnon

Your midfield is balanced on price which means a 6.0 guy is going to sit and you will need two transfers to raise cash if Nani or Bale or XX streaks.

Also, I think only Sinclair and Bent are pen takers, which to me makes a difference.

(I don't count pen taker Baines at 8.0 because it's a given any Def at that price should serve you pommes frites and s side salad while you watch the game. )

Haha "pomme frites and a side salad"... I like that. I also take your point that I'll have at least 6m on the bench every week. I hadn't really considered this, but now I think about it I've always had a 4.5-5m midfielder who I don't mind benching in the past. Bradley Johnson is blinking faintly on my radar, but Norwich just keep signing more midfielders so it seems risky.

Moses might work nice for Hoolahan. I don`t fancy 2 WIG players though!!!

I'd just start malouda straight away. Not a bad team though.

Any teams rotate well with Fulham in defence? I'm looking for a keeper to pair with Schwarzer.

    thanks

Just Luiz maybe too expensive for his playing time. It is a colossal PIA if he comes on for the last 20 minutes and Hugehes on the bench has a clean sheet.

I think his best days are past him, but Jol might think differently...
