In what was one of the most well-documented transfer sagas in modern times, Andy Carroll joined Liverpool for £35m from Newcastle United – a record for a British player – on the same day Fernando Torres left Anfield for Chelsea.

Carroll took Torres’ number 9 shirt but, while the performances of fellow new boy Luis Suarez had the Liverpool fans in raptures, the former Toon Army favourite had to cool his heels on the sidelines for a number of weeks due to an a thigh injury picked up while still at Newcastle.

The big hit man finally found his goal-scoring feet as he returned to full fitness, fetching a brace in Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield. This was the only game in which he scored for Liverpool in his seven league appearances, however, and the club will be looking for a big improvement next season.

Carroll looks the perfect foil for the outrageous talents of Suarez- little and large, skilful and powerful on the ground and in the air, the pair look set to be one of the most feared strike-partnerships in the upcoming campaign. Much anticipation rests on his shoulders, then, and if Carroll can come close to replicating the 11 goals and 3 assists he returned in 19 games at Newcastle last season, Liverpool can be expected to battle for a top four finish.

Key Factors

  • Although only finishing two games after January, Carroll showed what he was made of in the first half of last season. His FPL haul was admirable for a striker who was relatively untried in the top flight. Carroll finished the year with 135 points, made up of 13 goals, 6 assists and 21 Bonus Points.

  • Times look good for Liverpool under the reinstated Dalglish. His record has been superior to that of predecessor Roy Hodgson – 35 points in 18 games vs. 25 points in 20. Along with Carroll and the aforementioned Suarez, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing and FPL legend Charlie Adam have also joined the Liverpool ranks. Their squad is in a much stronger position than this time 12 months ago.

  • Although they currently boast a large squad, Carroll, if fit, looks a nailed-on starter- our Members Projections area has him down for 31 starts. The acquisition of Downing, in particular, should increase Carroll’s aerial threat at Liverpool- only Leighton Baines made more crosses in the Premier League last season. With the winger whipping balls in from the left and the creativity of Suarez close by, Carroll could certainly improve on last year’s goal tally.

  • Liverpool have a fairly kind run of fixtures at Anfield in the opening weeks of the season (SUN BOL WOL MUN NOR SWA), with just the visit of their old foes from Lancashire to cause much concern. With Luis Suarez currently taking a break after his Player of the Tournament performance in the Copa America for Uruguay, Carroll – who will have had a ‘proper’ pre-season in comparison to his strike partner – will feature prominently in these games, with doubts still surrounding Suarez‘s chances of starting the season.

he has a bad leg in pre season - may not start pre season but at 5.0 he is a good relatively young prospect. Not sure whats with the excessive holt love.

        Oh right, thanks for that.

I'll have to keep tabs on that one then.

I'm not really sure of the Holt love either, he has never really struck me as someone who could cut it in the top flight but we'll see.

There are options in the 7-9 mil bracket up front, whereas there aren't really (apart from Zoggy) in midfield so I imagine most people's 3rd striker will be more expensive than Graham.

Starting to like the look of bosingwa in my team. At 5.5 he is gret value (yes i know... if he plays) but he is really only competing with Ivanovic, who avb has been playing at half back but who knows... he is back and could be a better fantasy prospect than the rest of chelseas defence.

I'm going with him and have 2 from City plus Cole, if he don't play then I will still have 2 from City and Cole, if he does then it's a bonus.

Will try this tactic when they have strong clean sheet potential and bench him when they don't.

How does your defence line up? I can't help thinking there is better value in defence, however if you have a strong defence it makes a Captaincy choice difficult!

At the moment (although subject to change obviously) my team lines up (you have to see it in context)

          Given
          Bosingwa,Cole,Kompany,Clichy
Van Der Vaart, Taarabt, N Zogbia
Suarez (C every week or VDV) Gervinho, Saha (if fit)

Subs Ruddy, Ashley Williams (can't believe no one is talking about him, he's a beast and they defend well) Sinclair, Moses with .5 in the bank.

Captaincy is not really an issue for me, last year was a nightmare and for me it doesn't have to be on someone at 12M as Drogba, Lampard and Fabregas showed me a lot last year, Suarez has the X Factor as does VDV, those two will get it more often than not.

Happy to go 4 at the back, under normal circumstances it wouldn't work as trying to pick 4 clean sheets is very difficult, I only have to pick 2 and Chelsea/City will keep more than most and have the flexibility to play 3 at the back as my subs will be fairly active for their sides.

Interesting tactics, and nice team for the money...

Do you think Gervinho is gonna be a starter from GW1? All gunners seem to love him. Wenger loves him, even Henry loves him... I am very tempted...

Also is Clichy gonna get rotated?

I think he will, looks made for this game, exciting, assists, scores, gets in the box, as far as the game goes his output will be similar to van persie minus the pens, I'm not paying 3m just for pens.

I don't think Clichy will get rotated but if he does then I got enough on my bench to come in, same as with Bosingwa, i would be pretty unlucky if both got rotated on the same day but then I have gone for 3 active subs so ain't really sweating it.

you wouldn't want to use that .5 to get Baines in for Cole to mix up the teams the defence comes from at all?

I'm thinking of having Baines, cole, Kompany, Dunne, Simpson for my defence...

Tempted by Benayoun... A lot depends on whether AVB gets busy in the market...

I am tempted but a few things bother me, if Arteta makes it he will have to share set pieces, Saha is back so will Baines still be on pens if Arteta is not fit? Will Everton (who are usualy slow starters) keep clean sheets?

Last year has been and gone, got to look past that and wonder if he offers good value at 8M, if he was at a top 4 side then no question, he would be in but with Jagielka looking like he is coming to Arsenal then his clean sheet potential gets a bit weaker, I try and judge defenders on clean sheet potential over attacking gain as if they score but concede then it levels out.

I think it's good, I'm not sold on Fulham defence but I'm in a tiny minority there it seems, the opening fixtures may justify it. I'm slightly wary of anyone from Liverpool as they've got so many potentially high points scorers and I want to see which looks the best bet in practice before deciding. I prefer going with Bent first up then poerhaps switching to Suarez. I have a little more money up fron and a little less in midfield but our teams are fairly similar.

I'm looking at Bramble long term, but the opening fixture isn't brilliant and I don't want to be playing someone like Simpson/Orr GW1. At present I'm going in with Zog and Bent, but that might change.

For me there are too many punts in there (Aguero, Gervinho, Taraabt, even Carroll to a degree) and to make that doubly risky they're your captain options too, I'd also be wary of Rafael until we know a bit more about SAF's intentions, I have never heard of Wilson but I imagine you can do better than him.

Any constructive comments on my team please?

Given, Foster (when they put him back on)
    Kompany, Warnock, Hangeland, Kelly, Simpson
Downing, N'Zogbia, Y Toure, Ben Arfa, Dyer

Also, any nice out of position players this season? There were quite a few last season and each one paid off!

I don't think Hangeland will be worth anything like his price tag with Martin Jol in charge, I don't think Fulham will be anything like as solid as last year. Ben Arfa is, I believe, injured - Moses would make a good short term replacement. Yaya is an interesting one, as is Downing, personally I'd upgrade one and downgrade the other because there are so many options around the 10mil and 6.5 mil marks, but in terms of balance I think it's good. Nice front line.

people with kompany - will you ever bench him? I'm thinking in some tough away games i will (Since his attacking potential is not good)

I've found that he rotates well with a villa defender and he can come in for a cheap mid/att for a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 on the days when his away game is favourable.

i'm thinking of investing a bit more in defence:

Yes, kompany could get a clean sheet in a tough away game but similarly someone like moses or ohara could score in a tough away game too...

and usually defenders have more of a home advantage since you can score away from home in a minute of skill but to keep a clean sheet you need 90 mins of concentration.

Neither have I - I benched Baines twice last season, both successfully - but I would want a 6.0 defender to have some goal/assist potential - especially with the midfield prices being so high.

It looks sound in most areas to me. I'd be concerned about Barton's discipline - but luckily no points are docked for prison sentences 😉 Suarez, well that depends on when KD starts playing him. I think he'll score well this season; plenty of flair and will no doubt chip in with goals, assists and bonus points as a result.

    Malouda-Silva-Brunt (Moses-Tiote)

    Zamora-Caroll (Holt)

Arsenal traditionally start well and can produce some solid hammerings early on. They will also be keen to make ammends for last time. Very leaky defence though. Be great if its another 4-4 thriller.

really can't go wrong for 5.0 but Moses reeks of boselli mk II.
Same inconsistent, underperforming team that love throwing points away and not a sniff at set pieces as a safety buffer.
Ill probably give him a crack at that price but I reckon we may all be moving him on after his good fixtures with nothing to show for it ala Martin petrov.

Agree - Im steering clear of Taarabt for now. Quite easy to fit in if he shows signs of doing well in the prem. He strikes me as the kind of player who will score well when QPR are winning/on the front foot....which won't be very often in my opinion.

i think its ok to take a punt on Taarabt....as long as the rest of your team is laden down with sinclair, Moses, Holt and one or two defenders from promoted teams.

I reckon one or two risks is ok. If Taarabt fails to deliver in his first game which is home against the poor travelling Bolton then that is a pretty good indication of things to come. he can always be shifted to Sinclair the next week...who then also has a great home fixture.

Taarabt's price actually makes him worth the risk, means you can trade him out easily.

I agree he's definitely a gamble at that price - but considering his fairly high ownership (16.5% currently) he'll at least be insulated from immediate price drops if he doesn't play well to an extent that a more niche FFSy pick like Hoolahan / Holt would be. Part of the problem with Boselli last season was that the ownership was so low every time a few hundred people sold him he dropped and in the end it was like a stock market crash. There are so many other options at or just under that price that I think it makes sense to start with im and trade down if necessary. OPening fixtures justify it for me.

De Gea and Given is too much for me.

Hangelaand is massively overpriced, don't like Huth's fixtures, will Skrtel be a regular (Carragher and Agger first choice?).

Downing and Henderson? Neither do it for me, so both seems madness.

Hernandez is out for a month or so, missing the first few games so he's gotta come out.

ur bench players are weak - ferguson and beattie, but i guess that won't matter too much

      trade evra to cole
      luiz to kompany
      vdv to malouda
      bale to sessengon
      park to moses
use spare cash to upgrade fringe players

    Morning all

tell me: is there too much invested in this front line?

    Given Ruddy

    Kompany Brown Simpson Rafael Hughes

    Yaya Walters N’Zogbia O’Hara Moses

RVP Suarez(Carroll if he’s rested) Drogba

    Any comments much appreciated!

Short answer - probably yes. I personally don't like the picks of Yaya, Walters and Drog.

Consider ditching Drogs and upgrading mids I reckon

Ditch Drog, and you gotta tweak your defence and strengthen your mid.

    1)moses as a starter in a 3-5-2

    2)or Holt in a 3-4-3

    (for GW1)
