Newcastle United have this afternoon placed Joey Barton on the transfer list. Following the player’s criticism of the club on his twitter account yesterday, managing director Derek Llambias has met with owner Mike Ashley and the pair have subsequently moved quickly to address the matter. Barton is allowed to leave the club on a free transfer.

Barton was a proven Fantasy performer last season, with his set-piece delivery a key factor in the club’s successful season back in the Premier League. Despite his renowned reputation, Barton seems to have settled of late and his hint of unrest behind the scenes follow those of team mate Jose Enrique. With Kevin Nolan also leaving St James Park this summer, Alan Pardew looks set to lose another of his consistent performers. In terms of Newcastle set-piece takers, it’s worth noting that both Yohan Cabaye and Sylvain Marveaux have had their fair share already this pre-season and perhaps offers a pointer as to who Pardew will opt for in light of Barton’s departure.

At 28 years old, Barton still has plenty in his locker and Fantasy managers will be hoping for a mid-table move that guarantees starts. Priced at just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Barton should still prove great value for money with his free-kicks and corners always reliable to garner points- he picked up 4 goals and 9 assists last season.

Barton had earlier in the day stated he will comment on the situation at Newcastle via his twitter stream at 4pm this afternoon….

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

In that case would you still opt for him? (that's if you have him in your team already) I think the main draw about Barton is that he was probably the best player in that newcastle team. If he moves to Villa/Sunderland he won't get nowhere as many points IMO 🙁

          Totally agree.

The story where he went up to some guys girlfriend in a bar, said hang out with me as I've got more money, she said no so he then waited until they were outside and got his mates to start a fight with the other lot.

End results, guy had his arm broken while Wilshere sort of hung about not doing anything so he wouldn't get convicted. What a hero.

Wow, so what if he's a top prospect and can kick a ball. Doesn't mean he isn't a terrible human being.

I'd put him in the England team for sure if I was the manager but it still doesn't give people a free pass to be a complete douche.

So now you've gone from believing everything the tabloids have to say to concluding he's a terrible human being.

I look at your picture and I'm starting to wonder where this is coming from.

No one has "a free pass to be a complete douche", but no one deserves to be judged so easily over a single proposed story.

I consider footballers by their talent on the pitch. He can do whatever he wants as long as he plays well for club and country.

My tactic for the upcoming season is spending big on my strikers and midfield with a very cheap defense, with the exception of Kompany at 6,0. I think it will pay off.

    My question is...

    1) What are the best defenders to choose from in the 4.0/4.5 bracket? I have Orr and Simpson at the moment.

    2) If/when Enrique + Jag move to the 'bigger' clubs will their value increase straight away to keep in line with other defenders at the club? Or will they start at the same price and more likely to increase in price over the different gameweeks?

Newcastle are completly falling apart so I'd get Koscielny in for gameweek 1 and bench him for the next two games. Liverpool aren't great at defending set pieces either so you never know..

He's got a decent header on him.

I wouldn't buy Koscielny. I'd rather go for the extremes, those being either Vermaelen or Gibbs.
Koscielny provides the least attacking threat among the three, and frankly, despite history stating otherwise, I feel Wenger will spend this season and buy a first choice centre back who will play along side Vermaelen.

Ben Arfa's out for the initial few weeks (and several more soon to follow, judging by his fitness level) so if you look at it that way, I guess only two midfielders are guaranteed starting positions for newcastle.
Those are Cabaye and Gutierrez (considering he doesn't leave too). That leaves us with Marveaux, Tiote, Guthrie and I don't know much about Dan Gosling. So yeah, maybe for the initial few games Marveaux might be a good buy. And more importantly, a good differential. Might consider keeping him (I already have him in my tentative team)

However, I like a few PL teams and always felt sad at their position to not be able to spend.

Everton is one of them. They could sign him up, sell Rodwell, get a good 20m and spend it on a striker + midfielder. I'd like to see them in the top 8.

But I also want to see Barton at Sunderland, just for the competition. :/

you think management may backtrack? they have to realise what a mistake they've made
but that would take logic.. something sorely missing from the NU boardroom

why not barton to Yohan Cabaye. he's a know penalty taker and i think he's cheaper than barton. may be tempted myself now also

I disagree with Rigby. I say O Shea as he rotates well with Simpson.
