Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.â€

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

He's likely to be ignored by most yet end up gathering a decent score, but I think he's just a tad overpriced - 8.5 would be a good price.

Goodwillie hasn't won the last to Young Player Of The Year Awards in Scotland in 09/10 it was Danny Wilson now of Liverpool then of Rangers.

Good player though, i think he will do well at Blackburn and if he comes in at under £6m he will be a good option as a 3rd forward. I would rate him as more of natural goalscorer than Steven Fletcher and he has done well in his first two seasons in the EPL. His assist starts are good too. He is pacy and quite good in the air considering his height. Dundee Utd played in the earlier qualifying round of the Europa League so he is well up to speed and could hit the ground running if given the chance.

Can't see it. Argies got knocked out of the Copa America three weeks ago and he's been having his holidays since. No pre-season whatsoever, not back to training until Monday so a place on the bench with maybe half hour is about as much as I can see from him.

Striker ratings based on FPL points and minutes played in 2010/11 season.

    Agbonlahor 34
    Defoe 37
    Davies K 39
    Johnson A 39
    Fortune 40
    Dzeko 40
    Rodallega 40
    Doyle 41

    Keane 47
    Crouch 47
    Torres 48
    Roberts J 49
    Bent 50
    Balotelli 50
    Fuller 50
    Saha 51
    Ameobi 53
    Chamakh 54
    Gyan 57
    Lovenkrands 58
    Pavlyuchenko 59
    Ebanks-Blake 61

    Best 68
    Sturridge 68
    Fletcher 69
    Hernandez 73
    Tevez 73
    Berbatov 79
    Zamora 83
    Van Persie 88

Bear in mind some players played much fewer minutes than others, so there will are some strange anomalies. However, it's interesting because it sometimes highlights players that can be under-rated because they didn't play a full season due to injury or something.

So van Persie was 9 better than Berbatov. What does that tell me? Loads of work has gone into this, so I'm not knocking it...but you still need to say what we're looking at. What is 88 for van Persie?

Van Persie has more points than Berbatov because he scored more points compared to minutes played.

So if you assume Van Persie had played as many minutes as Berbatov did last season, and he kept scoring points at the same rate Van Persie comes out on top.

To work out the each players rating I simply divided their total points by their minutes played. The figure will always be 0.0XX. So to simplify things I removed the 0.0 and there you go.

Man U's fixtures look terrible until about gw 8 then they become a walk in the park.

Bent has decent fixtures first, is cheaper. Rooney is almost fixture proof though

Right a quick RMT if you would:

    Given Kenny

    Huth Kompany Enrique(assuming transfer) Swansea4.0 Norwich4.0

    Moses Tarrabat N'Zogbia Downing Silva

    RVP Holt Drogba

    Points:
    1) Given and Kenny rotate well apart from GW10
    2) Norwich and Swansea rotate well

    Thoughts?

Not bad, but I'm staying away from the promoted sides. Six of your players (Kenny, Nor Def, Swan Def, Moses, Taraabt and Holt) are from teams I expect to be fighting the relegation battle so I'm not overly keen.

Changing my team almost daily at this stage, the large Nzogbia following is worrking me but Ive gone for 0.5 more for Valencia in the midfield:

    Foster, Given

    Hangeland, Bardsley, Huth, Simpson, Baines

    Valencia, Cahill, Ephraim, Kuyt, Moses

    Van Persie, Odemwingie, Hulse

Thoughts on this team? here’s the original one, but had to change it with doubts over Nzogbia. http://www.fantasyfootballscou.....nt-1786452

    Kenny
    Cole Kompany Baines Enrique
    Moses Formica Silva Downing
    RVP Drogba
    subs (Given Graham Simpson Ferguson)
defence – rock solid, but if Enrique doesn’t make move to Liverpool I’m downgrading him to Orr and use the money to upgrade my midfield.
Midfield – Moses and Formica are punts but both on form in Pre Season. Downing looked very sharp in the last Pre Season game I saw him in and I think his position is pretty solid on the left. Silva is quality and is showing that in pre season.
Forwards – RVP – in my team until he gets injured. Drogba is a punt but I fancy him for first two(see comments after RMT in link for my reason)
subs are weak but I can easily play 4 or even 5 at the back if I’m stuck.

I like ur defence. Same as mine. Not sure about midfield. Drogs is a gamble but could work

      My team

      Given. Ruddy
      Kompany. Baines. Acole. Orr. Simpson
      Silva. Sess. Ohara. Sinclair. Moses
      Rvp. Bent. Holt.

your problem is you going to be restricted if you need to upgrade, not many options to release some money. I would reduce that defence for now and upgrade midfield.

      Both will start.

Warnock plays 4-2-3-1 formation so, in that formation I suspect Bothroyd will be the lone frontman, DJ could play in the central position behind him and Taarabt will be on the wing (with licence to roam and do whatever the hell he wants).
