Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.”

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

Anyone around the ranking of 30,000-100,000 the last few years would be welcome in my wee league. I don't want PRO's who score way above this so it can be tight-ish.

Pros do not make dodgy drunken transfers, they get to know who will be playing and don't sleep in and forget to change their team. They know who to buy at the start, rising stars, increasing values- I'm sure there is much more. Join if your not too good. I'm hoping to come around 30,000 and upwards according to my history.

While a lot of people have been right in pointing out that including more than 1 of Taarabt and Sinclair is a substantial risk (especially given there are proven alternatives in the likes of O'Hara, Barton, and Sessegnon), I think comparing them to Boselli is unfair.

Several more people pointed out that for every Boselli there is a Zaki, implying it is a 50/50 whether the promoted teams' main players will score well. Howeever, I think there are several more empirical reasons why they have more potential than Boselli.

    1. They are both set piece hoggers. (I believe Boselli was only on penalties, but may be wrong).

    2. The midfield alternatives are more expensive than they have ever been, and seem particular susceptible to rotation/uncertain of starts this year (Malouda, Nani, etc.) VDV seems to be the exception, but fixtures are bad.

    3. Boselli's only European club experience was with Malaga B, in the Spanish 2nd Division, where he scored 5 in 32. They have both played in England's 2nd Division (presumably an easier transition to make to the EPL than from Spain's 2nd Div or Argentina's Primera)and both scored far more goals.

    4. Both are somewhat late bloomers/unfulfilled prodigies who were noticed and signed at a young age by Tottenham and Chelsea, respectively.

Given all that, it's entirely possible they will both flop as nothing is certain in the game of football (or FPL). Still, I believe given these reasons, the potential Taarabt and Sinclair both hold (not to mention some favorable starting fixtures) outweighs the risk.

Out of interest, who was comparing them to Boselli?

Obviously a daft comparison - anyone who expects a player to either do as well as Adam or as poorly as Boselli is oversimplifying. Both Taarabt and Sinclair almost certainly lie somewhere in between the two.

As you say though, having both is a helluva risk.

It seemed a lot of people were comparing they're lack of experience in the PL to Boselli's earlier in the day.

They were a lot of comparison of Moses' good preseason form to Boselli's as well, which I think is also unfair. Not only does he PL experience, albeit limited, he has both potential that shows through in his stats, and the platform to fulfill it with N'Zogbia's departure.

This article illustrates the point pretty well - http://www.whoscored.com/Blog/gncjna4kxem_qzkmtjoijq/Show/Premier-League-Rising-Stars-David-Hoilett-Martin-Kelly-Kyle-Walker-Marc-Albrighton-Victor-Moses

Having both Dyer and Moses isn't right. One attacking injury and they're both on the pitch.

Personally I'd downgrade N'Zog (who's not at the height of fitness anyway), there's plenty of good options at 6/6.5. This should allow you to upgrade Moses.

Holt is a gamble, but having a 5.5 forward allows you to have 4 big hitters.

Then there's the well documented problem that Luiz is not a certainty for the first game.

Wilshire - good player, but not a big hitter at fantasy football... i'd change to a more attacking option like Formica (5.5), Sinclair (6) or Petrov (5.5)

Aguero - great player, but it's a risk as he's new. Could explode or could take a while to adjust. We'll know more after the charity shield i guess. For that kind of money I'd be tempted to play it safe and go with Bent though.

Suarez - not had much of a pre season after the copa america cup... could be prone to rest. Undoubted a good prospect for this season, just not so sure on gw1.

Other than, it's a solid team.

I dont think it's necessary to get United coverage... I'd rate Uniteds big hitters as Rooney, Nani and Young this season... All of them are highly priced so you can't afford them all.

Razmataz's team show's he's backing RVP and Carroll (as oppose to Rooney) and Malouda (as oppose to Nani/Young)

With that in mind, there is no reason to go and stick carrick (or cheap equiv) just to have a united player.

Someone recommended to me earlier today that because I had no chelsea coverage I should ship in Mikel for Formica... wtf!

Well, it's a close call... but RVP over Saurez swings it for me. I can see Saurez sharing pts with Carroll and Kuyt... yet RVP will be the main man for the gunners*.

Lamps and Malouda is a tight one, I do prefer Lamps overall, but with AVB alluding to Lamps playing deeper, and he prefers 4-3-3, I think Malouda will get more chances and is better value at 10.5m.

    Hi all,

Bit of a conversational idea this - considering starting the new season with no Chelsea attacking players.

Quiet simple reasoning. We don't know what the Torres/Drogba (Sturridge if not loaned out when his ban expires)pecking order will be.

Spending huge sums of £ on a forward player when not even knowing whether they'll start or come off the bench comes across as a gamble.

    That includes Malouda's role too.

    *battens down the hatches*

Well, I suppose Malouda is a gamble but the least of them.

I'm prepared to take the risk for the first few games. If he doens't play hopefully I'll covered by my subs.

Haven't seen Aguero obviously but would disagree re: City goals. Silva was the only one creating ANYTHING on the American tour - and you know how Mancini loves 1-0 and 2-0 wins.

Will the goals/assists be dispersed throughout the team? Or, centred around a few?

I'd hazard a guess & say the majority will come from Toure, Silva & a striker.

If Et'o ends up at City, that'll really put the cat amongst the pigeons.

That's what I'm thinking Camzy. VdV would be my first choice midfielder now, especially now that things look uncertain for Nani.

For now it's Malouda and Silva.

I'll also see how things progress with Kuyt and the new additions at Liverpool, but Kuyt definitely remains an option too.

I've got bored of shuffling the same players in and out of my line-up, so to shake things up a bit and make me look at things from other angles today I will be setting myself abitrary restrictions on team selection.
For example, you can only have one player from each team, you can't have anyone from last year's top 4, or everyone has to cost less than 7m.
Here's my first attempt at the latter:

    Reina, Given
    Luiz, Hangeland, Kompany, Dunne, Gibbs
    Brunt, Ramsey, Sessegnon, Albrighton, Taraabt
    Rodallega, Beckford, Doye

    7.5m to spare... ooh, frugal.

Gamst Pederson or Sessegnon or Benayoun.

    And why?

I would say Sessegnon from those as he is playing off the strikers, playing for a half decent team and less likely to be rotated than Benayoun.

      Robinson (average)

Baines (great) – Bramble (average) – Bardsley (average)

VDV (great if he's fit) – Sinclair (good budget option) – Nani (great if he's picked but will probably be rotated with Valencia) – Duff (average)

RVP (great) – Rodellega (average, but should do well in the first few weeks) – Bent (very good, especially with opening fixtures)

Which of these do you think will do best this season N'zogbia or Dempsey need to downgrade 1 of them by 3 million

Well, I think they may both struggle to match their scores from last season but I think Dempsey will struggle more because it was his best ever season (by far!). It was also N'Zogbia's best season but I think moving to Villa might mean he'll get more assists than at Wigan (thanks to Darren Bent).

So I think N'Zogbia will just outscore Dempsey this season and for 1m less I think it's obvious that Dempsey is the man to downgrade.

Love the "Holt to Leicester" rumour going around earlier today, and this rebuttal:

I wonder which rag they could have been referring to..... 🙂

Pretty good but I'd definitely get rid of Salgado
