Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.”

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

    Looks good to me 🙂
Not keen on Salgado, you may as well downgrade to 4m as you've got good rotation going on with Bardsley/ Simpson (Is he nailed on starter?).Personally prefer Cashley to Baines but nothing between them.
The extra cash could upgrade Moses as theres a host of mids at 5.5/6m.
No Man C or Chelsea attacking options?
Thats my 2p worth but good team.

    Given
    Hughes Kompany Orr
    Downing Silva Modric N'zogbia
    Zamora RVP Rodallega

    Kenny Bardsley Sessegnon Simpson

Assuming Modric goes Chelsea that is, if not then I'll have Beneyoun and upgrade Simpson to Enrique. 1m in bank to do Rodallega to Odemwingie in a couple of weeks.

    Thoughts?

Depends on how cheap and what level of person you want to surprise 😉

Sessegnon, Moses, Taarabt, Sinclair, Ohara could all do well at A budget level big won't surprise anyone here, Barton and Joe cole could equally do well depending on transfers

Tchoyi at WBA... it would be a serious suprise if he scored in the first 2 games but after that he's got a decent little run. 5.5m could be a snip. He's on my watchlist- rotates pretty well with Moses if you're after a couple of cheapies.

    for RMT posters:

there's a consensus RMT up in this piece (as there is every pre-season). it is:

    GK: Given, blah blah blah
DEF: Kompany, Cashley/Baines, Sunderland defender, cheapie (e.g. Orr, De Laet), blah blah
MID: Silva, Villa mid, blah blah
    ATT: Zamora/Suarez, 12.0er, Holt/Graham/other cheap 3rd striker
    Other: Chelsea/City/United attacking cover

Save us some aggravation and ask targeted questions about specific players rather than asking the community whether or not it likes the consensus it's already reached!

If your RMT is totally different, fair enough. But if you look at the skeleton above and have most/all of those players, don't bother. No need to preach to the choir!

I think De Vries. Hennessey started last season as backup to Hahnemann, and hasn't exactly smothered himself in glory. De Vries did a fantastic job at Swansea, and it's inconceivable he'd move to Wolves if he wasn't assured starting status.

who are you saving the cash for? not looked at the FPL website to confirm, but it looks like you've only got 96-97m in that team.

would defo drop tevez, and midfield looks like it could be (a) true vision or (b) a GW2 wildcard. also, defense could use one more regular starter (for your FPL team, not the player's team). as it is, it looks like you'll be rotating all except cashley.

RVP won me my league last year..would you take him over Rooney?

I'm really tempted but then I'll have no United cover..

    Gday lads...need some advice
    A)Samba Taraabt(or other 6.5) Hernandez
    B) Alcaraz Tchoyi RVP

im torn as i think Hernandez will have a great season and RVp is too injury prone but has been in good scoring form.

From what i've heard he was meant to have 2 weeks off from the date it happened. that means he misses the Comm shield but may be available for opening day. he doesnt really need a pre season as he was on Copa Amrica duty so not sure...

Very solid team. I’m not in for all of the Holt love but many of the people on here are so each to their own. Great defense, I’m sure Sessegnon will be in ur 11 after GW1 right? Downing could be very good this season and will be on corners.

Most people on here are competing in other games, the Sun, Metro etc.....but the Daily Mirror one only seems to be the only one where my rival can see my teams before the opening kick off?

In the other games I'm doing your opponent can't do this, I have a few players that I don't want him to see and this is just a major pain in the butt. Gonna have to put my players in just prior to kick off.

Stupid commies over at the Daily Mirror!

You need to think very differently on different fantasy games too. I played telegraph last year and it seemed to me that it was all about goals goals goals. No bonus points and not great rewards for defenders or for assists.

This is very true, I do a couple and you have to take a different approach to each, because of the different rules obviously.

What's everybody's thoughts on Hoillett? He seems super cheap considering his end to last season. Shame he's not a midfielder though as he sometimes plays on the wing. He has a tendency to get knocks and go off but he could be a bargain at that price.

Downing is cheaper and pretty much nailed on to start. Although Kuyt has been a guaranteed started in previous seasons I can't fit him into a team anymore unless Suarez or Carroll have injury's. He could play right wing but we've just spent 20m on Henderson :S who knows.

i posted on this earlier in the thread...

if kenny goes with 4-3-3, surely kuyt will be nailed on to start on the right of carroll, no?

            henderson as cover.

if they play 4-4-2, he might lose some starts.

No if they play 4-3-3 then It would be downing and Suarez as wing forwards and Carroll centre in my opinion. If it's 4-4-2 then Kuyt could be right midfield. If 1 of Carroll and Suarez are injured though he'll defo play.

Should be easy now Skrtel is injured. Got to be Carra and Agger centre. If we get a new left back then they will play otherwise I'd guess Johnson lb Kelly rb. depends on a signing. I'm guessing Enrique though.
