Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.”

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

Defense is risky: doubled up on villa and Luiz is a rotation risk ( as you have Prob heard.)

I'm not convince yaya will play attacking this year. Seems to be all about silva. Nasri could be a steal if cesc leaves and he want to fight for arsenal.

Ethers and Taarabt are solid picks so is rodellega if you will drop him after GW3.

Your missing a mid and a striker also.

Defence is risky, midfield is okay, but Etherington is iffy and Taraabt might not step up, Rooney is obviously a good FFL choice but Rodallega isn't great, don't be fooled by his opening fixtures, he wont score many in them. Personally I'm a fan of having a top four keeper as they're consistent point scorers, Aston Villa arent Birmingham, even with McCleish they'll concede quite a few goals. Also, where are the rest of your players?

Missed Odem striker and Watson mid. tired 😛

Thanks fellas, you both mentioned my defence is risky. Think Kompany for luiz would probably be a good move I think he might well be the full back of choice this season. Hadn't thought about villa and an eye opener about toure

I've always had faith in Rod but had visions of swapping for k davies after the 3rd as harry says. maybe look to get pepe between the posts and too much wigan..

I disagree. For a start I don't want to punch Vincent Kompany in his stupid face every time I see him.

On a serious note, in the sense of being an ever-present but unexciting defensive option, yes. I think the gap between City and Liverpool's defences last season was more than very slighty better, but this season I think that gap will close somewhat.

I do think Kompany is a better defender than Carragher though, Carragher's been a bit slow since he turned 47.

I think Wigan could struggle against QPR and Swansea, and not convinced that Moses is going to do well at all. Defensive subs are poor and Y.Toure's position is uncertain, although its worth a gamble for the first few weeks. That keeper combo is far too common imo, I'm not a fan.

Yeah good squad i like it. Drogba seems to be the starter for GW1. but you might get frustrated with him if he gets rotated. I would be wary of yaya as well. I think modric would be a better pick if he goes to Chelsea, or even downing. Yaya was lucky to stay in my squad for 5.5 last year. Not a huge fan of what he brings Offensively.

fair call on Yaya. It does interest me why he is so popular though..

Drogba is pretty much there for captaincy in GW2 and 3, could go later if he isnt getting enough TOG. (time on ground).

Not too sure on Downing, liverpool have a lot of good of mids, what is his JS like?

        Modric is interesting..

Modric will be a cheap entry into Chelsea attack with stable JS, I think he will be heavily invested in if that transfer happens.

Downing has good JS I believe. He had one of the highest number of successful crosses last year and now he has Carroll to aim for. Plus their LW depth isn't great.. Joe Cole of Maxi anyone. That said downing could bomb but I am backing him.

Pretty much similar to the masses, trying to get mostly stable mids with strong defense and 2 strong forwards. Apart from silva and downing pretty cheap mids who will feature heavily in their sides.

You sure you want an Arsenal defender (esp with their tough opening fixtures?)
Rafeal a rotation risk with Jones & Fabio (Utd tough fixtures too)
Yaya captain is bold. Its bold having him in your team at all if as suspected he plays a deeper role.
Benayoun rotation risk (esp if chelsea sign a playmaker)
Hernandez confirmed already to miss the start of the season (google it) maybe back GW2 or GW3. So you MUST drop him.
      Odemwingie has awful fixtures.

I dont like to be overly critical but it seems like you havent really thought about your team at all. Sorry but you need to rip it up and start again

McCarthy, I wouldnt count on, Benayoun if Modric, Kaka etc arent signed, Hernandez, dont know, hope he breaks his leg, Carroll could be great, could be s**t, O'Hara shouldn't be on the bench, VDV is too expensive for what he offers, Odemwingie is too expensive to have on the bench and this message is no f*****g help at all. If a team loses one of its good players, others can step up, like Nani did last season, not because the other player affected their game but because of the responsibilty. Bent, Drogba, Nani, Young, Nasri, Silva are good players for his price, but stick to your guns, it would be boring if people listened to everyone elses opinion, choose who you think will do better. IMO VDV could do very well, Spurs worry me though.

pick your team for the first 5-6 gameweeks, not the whole season...most people use their Wildcard pretty early and you can too to fix any errors.

Pick one keeper you're gonna go with almost every week and then one that is a super cheap starter...Given/Ruddy etc...

the defense is fine, you'll probably want to play Hangeland

don't take gambles initially, you can make changes with the wildcard...replace the gambles with more certain starters like Duff, OHara, Albrighton etc...

the forward line is ok, though I think there are better options then Rodallega...I would upgrade Bent to Drogba, or downgrade him and get Malouda in the mid

To be honest I'm going to steer clear of all the Chelsea names mentioned ^^^

I'll maybe look to bring in a Chelsea defender when the team looks settled.

Hope it can be Bosingwa but more likely Luiz. Already got Malouda

AVB will play whoever is in the best form, and rest players often, especially attacking players, defenders will more than likely be allowed to have consistency. I think Drogba will start the Stoke game, they can both play together and I think AVB has no preference prior to the season, he just wants whoever is the better player to play. Drogba against Stoke makes sense due to his aerial defensive abilities, Torres could start too but I doubt that, he may come on at half time or the 60 minute mark, just keep an eye on Chelsea's results and whoever is scoring, get in your team, the only stiker I would consider starting with is Drogba, possibly Anelka because he seems revitalised under AVB, he was great against Aston Villa, there'll be a clearer indication after we play Rangers.

Its a competition, I suppose I'm one of the few people who doesn't want everyone knowing my team, I will tell you Cech and Ivanovic are in it, and Benayoun too providing we dont sign a playmaker, other than that I can only say its brilliant and that the players I have picked aren't any of the really common ones that seem to feature in so many RMT's. If I tell everyone, I might not win, and I really should win this season. I'm happy with all but one player, and I wont say who he is... he is Matt Jarvis, I think he's a possible weak link, damn!

    Drogba, Bent, Zamora

Am considering downgrading Zamora to Holt and using the 1.5 to upgrade Taarbt to N'Zogbia and Ruddy to Al Habsi. Bobby can score some points though and is a good point of difference (when not injured).

Also want Suarez if he plays - then again would like RVP but can't stretch to him.

Huth too expensive with some tough early fixtures. If you are going to pick him though you should play him- I'm guessing you chose him more for his goals from set-pieces than for his CS potential.

Looks a pretty strong team though. I personally wouldnt have Brunt- sometimes his good performances dont equate to points but he's worth a punt

I've been blessed with FFS for 2 years (thx!) and hv always relied heavily on the ticker for fixture difficulties. At the end of last season I decided to try using the ticker on TotalFPL.com which has a very different view on the difficulties. Example, Man Utd is ranked at the bottom over 6 weeks on FFS but ranked 4th on TotalFPL.

Just wondering what is everyone's take on the two?

who are you looking at who is never mentioned in any of these RMTs? The forgotten men if you like?

Sunderland's fixtures from gw2-7 are sweet, too.

I'm worried these 'generic' RMT's could really get burnt the first few weeks. The 'casual' player will probably pick Nani because of last season's results and he could go mental again. All this rotation talk but he could play the first 5-6 games?? Who knows...

      Good question!

Gyan is one to watch for sure, but at 8m I'm not sure he'll find his way into my team...

I'm looking at Tchoyi, could do well GW3-6 I think.

Also, Angel Rangel, and not just for his name. Potential defensive and attacking returns GW2, 3 and 5.

Formica is someone I've been researching today, I wouldn't mind a punt on him at 5.5, but I think Blackburn may be a bit too crap for him to do that well.

Leon Osman. Maybe. Probably not though.

yeah agree 8mil sounds a bit high for gyan but better than 10mil for bent imo since he is also the focal point of sunderland AND knows how to create as well as score.

I dunno, Bent scores goals out of nowhere though. He got 7 more goals in the 09/10 season than he did last year, and that was when he was at Sunderland. N'Zog and Albrighton will give him plenty to feed off I reckon.

I take your point about Gyan creating as well as scoring though, Bent's numbers for assists are ridiculously low!

as i said above i think bent is a waste of cash and there are a lot of better options including buying someone cheaper and improving elsewhere in your team.
The key to a good fpl striker is that he gets assists as well as goals and bent really doesn't do that. Look at the top players of recent seasons and they all popped up with plenty of assists.

Today has been a bad day already (1:10pm here in China)
Read an article saying N'Zog is a doubt to start the season. Somebody above has said Suarez is nigh on confirmed not to start. My team is falling to pieces.

    Question:
a)Clichy + Simpson(latter will hardly ever make my team)
b)R Johnson + Hughes (who will both be relied upon often)

Note: I have Komp so Clichy will double up my City DF, but that option makes it easier to upgrade to Luiz if he emerges as a starter for Chelsea by GW3. option b kinda leaves me stuggling to get Luiz without taking a points hit.

Just to be clear, Suarez has definitely not been ruled out. He's back in training next week. All that's been said is that they "won't rush him back" .... so there's a risk he won't start, but he is not a "confirmed non-starter"

Also, don't forget you CAN make transfers after the window opens! All is not lost.

    Given/Ruddy
    Kompany/Clichy/Enrique/Orr/Simpson
    Malouda/Silva/Sess/Moses/Formica
    RVP/Zamora/????
