Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.”

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

what happened between gw38 of last season and gw1 of this season that made van persie go from absolute MUST HAVE to not even in most teams?

Even when arsenal were on a bad run he scored nearly every game and arsenal are actually known for starting strongly.

Even with Arsenal not having the 'best' opening fixtures, I can't see how to leave him out. Only question with Arsenal for me is whether Ramsey is worth a punt or not at this early stage.

Picking him you take a punt on two things: 1) He'll get picked AND 2) IF picked, he'll score.
Unlike some punts like Drogba, everybody knows Berbs isn't exactly a consistent goal scorer.

to back it up... last season:

Berbatov: 176 points in 2208 minutes
Drogba: 176 points in 2791 minutes

Pretty conclusive who was more consistent, really

Get rid of his hat tricks, and he's only gotten 10 goals. Get rid of Drogba's hattrick, and you've still gotten 9 goals.

haha - get rid of his hat tricks.

                That's kind of cheating!

Who cares if the goals come in a few games if you keep faithful and keep him in your team the goals will come.

But then, keeping him means that you loose a valuable striker captaincy option as he's too unreliable to have as captain. Unless you live on the edge and have balls of steel of course. Considering for 9.5 you can get e.g. Suarez who has had much more consistency in addition to being a starter.

But surely this only further's the case for Berabtov. Not only did he outscore Drogba in fewer minutes but he also offered the great bonus of massive captaincy bonuses in attractive fixtures.

exactly - and apart from liverpool i'm pretty sure most of berbs came against weak teams, so it was easy to know when to captain him.

Not saying your statement's wrong, but those are the wrong stats to support your argument. Points over the season does not back up game to game consistency.

OK and i'm saying total goals in a season are more important than consistency. You just have to be a bit more patient but you'll get more points - and it's points we want.

just to make it clear i'm NOT saying pick berbatov this season... i'm only saying he was more consistent than drogba last season.

This season berb is a stupid pick unless we see signs that fergie will start him regularly.

The problem is that If you are saying that total goals in a season is more important than game to game consistensy Berbatov is still an unwise pick as you would have to keep him for the season to gain from his seasonal stats and it is clear that he is not necessarily in the starting 11.

This means that Berbatov is only relevant when you know he will start, but since he doesnt have game to game consistensy you do not know that he will score.

Berbatov is a big punt when he is in the starting 11. Imagine what a punt he is when not.

Ok I'm tentatively looking at how to start the season without Suarez (absolute MUST for me this year when he is bloody playing!) and N'Zog.

    Given (Ruddy)
    Komp Hughes Enrique (Simpson Wilkinson)
    Downing Moses Silva Malouda (Sinclair)
    Roon Bent Holt

and please please no more bad news re: injuries etc.....

DF is pretty weak admittedly but MF and ATT (apart from Holt of course) is looking very tasty.

HK is a good place to live as a westerner (because let's face it you need some home comforts sometimes and it's a very international city, plus you can earn a lot of $$$ here)

But as a holiday destination i wouldn't say it's great - v expensive compared to china, and more of a stale kind of clean place without a lot of its character bulldozed and replaced with shiny buildings - think row after row of chain shops.

But then again the skyline on a clear night is a must see and there are a few fun things to do over a short period of time. If you want any recommendations, let me know what you're looking for.

maybe i'll try nanjing. I think the 'local' food in mainland china is a lot better than that in hong kong. in hk there's too much seafood, steamed/ deep fried stuff., and a real lack of strong flavours. But hk is good for international food.

Rooney and Bent have decent matchups to start off with.

      I'm starting off with Rooney.

My quandary is Lampard or Malouda? Now after weeks of shoe horning a team around Lamps I've gone with Malouda. Eek!

Gone without any Villa attackers. N'Zogbia sounds like he's not fit yet and I dont trust Bent at £10m.

For that kind of outlay I want a guy I can be confident putting the armband on in any given week. Bent doesn't inspire that level of confidence in me, I'm afraid.

Rather pay more for a reliable captain choice like RVP or Tevez (if he is there in gw1).

I'd only have Ruddy in my squad if I wasn't going to play him (e.g. with Hart or Cech as first choice every week). Swansea's goalie might be a better option or if you can stretch to 9.5 combo's you've got better choices.

    RMT Guys:

    Gone very different.

    Given (Moreira)
Orr, Alcaraz, Jose Enrique, Kompany (Wilkinson)
Malouda, Moses, David Silva (N. Dyer, Tiote)
Drogba, Van Persie (C), Aguero (VC)

Gone a risky yet potentially rewarding line up.

    Thoughts?

P.S I know I have a 4.0m starting, I just think my forwards outweigh that.

Liking the team, just keep an eye out on wilkinson as he has a brkoen toe atm.
Also see how aguero does in Community Shield, might want to downgrade to Bent and upgrade one of your mids so they can actually be used as a viable sub.
Also since both ur mids will barely play, change tiote for reo-cocker, as tiote tends to rack up the yellows

Put it this way starting from the front

      - drogba may not start and if does he may not play more than 55-60.
      - aguero - will he start - will mancini bring him on after an hour after everyone is tired or will he throw him in game 1 from start?

      midfield

      - moses dyer tiote all low point scorers maybe a good week here or there but generally 2 points will show for each of these i think;

      defense

      - think you need one more 5 or 5.5 defender - even if enrique goes to liverpool in the next 2 days will he play game 1?

a lot a unknown answers - i wouldnt be confident with that line up but good luck.

          +1

Moses played back up to N'Zogs last year and got very few minutes. I'm not saying its guaranteed that he will score big this year but with him taking over as the main man now that Zogs is gone and with his current preseason form, I'd say there is a high chance that he will bring decent returns and at 5.0 there is very little risk.

Not like we dont all need a 5.0 mid anyways.

Community shield will sway my decision. If Aguero is good (predicted by me), he's in. Remember he plays Swansea at home GW1.

As for Drogba, why wouldn't he play? He's still one of the best strikers in the world and I doubt that Anelka will hold him back. I hope they play two strikers, Drogba and Torres, time will tell. Anyway, Droggers should annihilate GW2 and 3, his fixtures are ridiculous, he's there almost just for his captaincy.

I seem to have gone the opposite route to most, strong defence and even mid/attack. I think there's a lot more value in good defenders and have doubled up on Chelsea/Man C which seems to be FPL heresy but with both clubs being amongst the most likely to keep a clean sheet it makes more sense to me than throwing random defenders in. Also people will argue what happens when they play each other but that's only twice a season and my team will most likely have changed long before then...

    Given (Ruddy)

    Ivanovic, A.Cole, Kompany, Lescott (Orr)

    Yaya, Moses, Kuyt, Benayoun (Sessegnon)

    RVP, Ba (Gueye)

Ba/Sess/Moses mainly for rotation depending on fixtures. Yaya may be not as attacking as Silva who was my main choice before making some swaps but still scored well last season and looks to benefit even more with new BP system.

morning All, its RMT crazy atm, cant wait till season starts!!Ill be in Egypt on gameday unfortunately but will be eagerly watching the Manc Derby this weekend to get my fix...

ALmost finalised a team. As a perfectionist, i hate having cheaper players in it but it needs to be done... any obvious mistakes?

Given (Ruddy - most popular 4.0.... will prob never play)
Kompany, A.COle, Salgado, Alcaraz (decent opening fixtures) (Orr as sub)
Lampard, Silva, Moses, (Sessegnon, Ferguson )
    Rooney, Bent (GREAT fixtures) Holt

(sorry if im not allowed to say this??) which means that the scouts rate him highly!! as do i!!!

He will score pens with drogba and torres diving everywhere. he will score sceamers from 2o yards. he will assist. and he'll get midfield EA bonus points!

          with great fixtures.

Of course that's far from a must have, that's why I haven't claimed it.

Keep seeing Bent in plenty of teams. 10 is so expensive for a player like him for me. Best two creators has left Villa after all, and Charles nzogbia doesn't pass the ball. Fixtures are great but for a little more you get real quality players.

He will score goals though. The problem is, sometimes he can be quiet against teams you expect him to score again, then pop up and score a brace against a bigger team. Hard to know when to captain.

If you have him though, he will score goals for you. I'm going for N'Zog 🙂

Ok I'm in for Kompany wagon. I just hope he's not another Boselli or Kolalov of last season. 🙂

Ok, 3 days without changing my team. Time to post:

    Given
    Ruddy

    Baines
    Enrique
    Komapany
    Alcaraz
    Simpson

    Lamps
    VDV
    Taarabt
    Moses
    Dyer (N)

Suarez (0.5 saved for Carroll if Suarez doesn't start)
    Bent
    Holt

My main concern is the untried players, but I think I have enough certain scorers to see me through. Thoughts?

        But in all seriousness...

the team is reasonable. My thoughts are that the likes of lampard and bent are overpriced but they DO have good fixtures which could justify it in the early parts of the season before you sell them off.

I'd probably prefer malouda to lampard (a risk but if he plays he is more attacking than lampard anyway) and then with the extra 1.5 i'd put in a sunderland/ everton defender to rotate with enrique (assuming he goes to liverpool) since you will be starting baines every game but maybe not enrique in away games (liverpool don't do away clean sheets)

Cheers for the feedback. I'm just not sure Malouda is going to start every game and it is a very big risk with that cash!

not sure if you've seen but the sun (for what its worth) seem to think Suarez will miss the opener:

There seems to be a lot of panic regarding Nzog missing the 1st game of the season. Can't see building a team for 1 week being a successful strategy.

The following 6 games for Villa bring 4 at home to Blackburn, Wolves, Newcastle and Wigan with 2 away at Everton (ok, not easy) and QPR. Where's the problem with selecting him now so you don't have to waste a transfer in GW2?

I'm hanging back on Nzog until at least GW2. Surely a better bet to wait and see. However I do have Suarez at this stage so want to spread the risk.

Well you need your cheapies and the trick to preseason is trying to identify them.

          I would downgrade a defender for a Silva, a VDV, a Downing.

VDV for Lamps would be a start.
