Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.”

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

I'm keeping 1m but that's for RVP in GW4. Not sure there's any point as there will be price rises and other transfers I have to do before then.

We don't know for sure - FPL often 'tweak' the transfer rules slightly from season to season so we can't rule out a complete change in policy - IMO it would be unlikely, though. We'll find out soon enough...

I was actually looking into Jarvis myself, along with the likes of Vaughan and Barton (club pending), I would say he is a good 6M pick.

If you have the funds it could be worhwhile to upgrade to the likes of albrighton. At 6, there is also Brunt. Tchoi at WBA could be a good shout as well. If he is a regular, he's bound to get some goals in

You know, something like they have on facebook except an on-page notification. Can get tiresome going back from page to page when something was posted at the end of the previous one.

If not planned, how can I suggest it? Are there moderators on now?

I like your DEF, looks solid with good rotation options.

Bale is a bit of a punt, when he's on he's really on, but when he's not you'll be looking at 2 points from him. Maybe downgrade to Sess or Taarbt. Could also go for a cheeky punt on Eagles, looks nailed on for Bolton with Lee out for the season.

Zamora has broken his hand apparently, so maybe try to shift him for someone else. Rodellega has good fixtures, Holt looks good and is on pens, Hoilett and Ba will be target men for their respective teams

Brunt is a very good consistant point scorer. Sinclair could be the new Adam, he takes pens etc and was their top scorer last year. O'hara and Hunt are good. If Modric leave spurs, Kranjcar could be a steal.

Sinclair didn't have the top scorer in the Championship to compete with last season though.

Brendan Rodgers didn't bring Danny Graham in for him to get assists for Sinclair, did he?

Graham, imo, is going to take a lot of points off of Sinclair this season.

    Given/Foster
    Kompany/Luiz/Vidic/Enrique/De Laet

Boys, I have rodders in my team at the moment - and despite a nice 3 first games (then 3 stinkers mind!) I am still reluctant to have him.

    Why?

Wigan could easily lose those 3

Reo, I saw something the other day where Warnock said that when Orr (I think it was) isn't fit Dyer can fill in at full-back. None of the £4.5M's are any good, imo. Find the funds to upgrade a bit I'd say.

+1, he's very unlikely to start for QPR.

His minutes for ,i>Swansea are now also under threat from Routledge, ehich is unfortunate because anyone who saw Routledge play in the prem last year will be able to confirm that he is gash.

As for the rest of your team - looks fine, but you may be short of captaincy options in midfield/attack after investing so much in defense.

I only mean dyer or tiote for my bench warmers so just want someone who will play every week so looks like it might be tiote. Defense will be downgraded after the first month when Chelsea have finished with all their easy fixtures! Then can look at upgrading the forwards and midfielders!

I'm not going to put him in from day 1 anyway but he could be a good option.

Alberto Aquilani does not exist as far as FPL goes. If FPL use the same reasoning on price as they have for Joe Cole then he should be available on the cheap.

He's been LFC's main man in pre season.

A question for the members here:I'm thinking of becoming a member myself but don't know if it's absolutely essential for fantasy success.I know the members' articles give you an edge over others but would you say that one just can't do well without them and by reading only the free articles here?I know McGurn and Reeson use this site but I don't know if they are members here. But there were plenty of players who weren't members here who did pretty well last year, right? So all I'm asking is if it's essential.

the top players in FPL are going to do well whether or not they have access to the members' content on this site. they've got the right understanding of when players are going to go on runs of form and i don't think any amount of statistical data is going to give you that kind of vision if you don't possess it innately.

that said, for the rest of us, the access to OPTA data and the scouts' interpretation of that data is a big help, not to mention access to the members' ticker (which i use more and more often each passing day) and the projections.

but you shouldn't necessarily be thinking about the "to become a member" question from the standpoint of whether or not it's going to improve your position in the FPL table. you should ask yourself "given my attitude towards FPL, is having access to more information going to make my experience more enjoyable?" if the answer is yes, cough up the 12.50. if the answer is no but you appreciate all the time and energy the team has put into heightening our enjoyment of FPL, cough up the 12.50. if the answer is no and you don't really care that there's a resource out there like FFS, keep your 12.50.

      simples!

If you want to do well at this game and take it seriously, then you need to become a member, as the Opta data definitely gives you an edge to make an informed decision.

On the otherhand, if you are a casual player and just in for the fun of it, then probably not.

I can see Downing being at the end of countless crosses and through passes to Carroll & Suarez, as well as cutting inside and grabbing the odd goal as well as winning free kicks for Adam to slot home.
Attackers only get 1 additional point for a goal as opposed to an assist, hence midfielder with assist and goal potential is in my opinion much better than attacker with similar potential.

My bet at the end of the season is that Downing wil have notched up more goals and assists than Suarez.

Thus - if you only go with 1 Pool player in the front 8 - go with Downing, and spend money on attacking potential such as Roo/RVP/Man Citeh and Chelsea (if they manage to sort out one or both of Torres/Drogs)

Finally, I think I have my team done for now. May be a few tweak depends on some new info. Now just can't wait for the new season to start.

I thought my team was done but got this Zog fitness issue.

Thinking of leaving as is, but its a straight choice...

    A) Mal & Silva

    Or

    b) Lamps & Zog

I've gone for A. Every time I see City at the minute I see Silva cropping up between the midfield and attack and I get the feeling the Malouda will be a starter on the left for Chelsea.

    Zog + Malouda

    Or

    Silva + Benayoun

    I think Benayoun will start
