Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.”

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

CFC Tom, as a Chelsea fan what do you think your starting back 4 would be for the upcoming season? Can't afford Cole so got Ivanovic, just hope he isn't a rotation risk. Luiz worth a punt? Cheers.

I reckon Ivanovic will play the majority of games in the RB position but from time to time will be rotated with Bosingwa. Luiz will rotate with Alex. Cole and Terry are the only nailed on starters. I think Luiz will start the season though, even against Stoke.

Personally, I have an opnion on our best back four, but we have so many options: Cole, Bertrand, Ferraira, Luiz, Bosingwa, Terry, Alex, Ivanovic and possibly Rajkovic if he can get a work permit that its hard to say. Cole and Terry are almost certain to start, as for the other CB and RB, it is hard to say, I think AVB has been impressed with Ivanovic in pre season so I would think he'll be a regular, plus he's versatile and a good defender, Alex and Rajkovic are the other two centre backs he's seen in action as Luiz hasnt played a pre season yet, but with Rajkovic's work permit issues I would say the safest bet is Ivanovic, Alex, Terry, Cole as our initial back four. To start with one of those four would be wisest, however, Alex is injury prone so that may cause Bosingwa to come in at right back and Ivanovic to play CB. Anyway, in answer to your question, Ivanovic doesn't seem that much of a roatation risk and Luiz is not worth a punt at this point, he'll have to show himself to be in ABV's favour first, also, I dont think he's a good defender, he is a good player though. Any one of Terry, Cole or Ivanovic are safe bets, the rest are risks, I've got Terry in my team at the moment. This could all change depending on signings, although all we need is a natural right back imo.

Lads, don't really like doing RMTs, but I need some advice and a 2nd pair of eyes to look at me team.

    Given (Ruddy)

    Kompany, Cole, Hughes (shawcross, bramble)

    Benayoun, Silva, Downing, N'Zogbia (N.Dyer)

    Saha, Rodallega, Rooney

Is it horseshit or what? Benayoun isn't definite, am waiting on Chelsea's activity in the transfer market, could be a good purchase if he starts IMO. Also gambling a bit on Rodallega and Saha (fitness with Saha, and a shit team for Rodallega) but both have potentially good fixtures.

Did have Dempsey instead of Downing earlier, so that's still an option.

Any thoughts/tips would be much appreciated.

dont like the stike force. Rooney's GW1-6 are tough. Saha I just dont rate and he wont be on PK's. Get a cheapie defender in there as you will be benching 2 most weeks. RVP could rip it up.

I think Rooney has better fixtures than RVP to be honest. I know utd have spurs and arsenal in their opening 6 games, but both at home and utd have good records against those. Plus Rooney scores well in big games, don't think I want to get rid of him to be honest. Although yeah, RVP was a goal machine last season, so I take your point.

Could get a cheaper defender in and upgrade on saha though. or a cheaper mid instead of bennynoon, since he's not a guaranteed starter.

        too much headwork this 🙁

Riise looked great, bombed down the wing a fair few times and put some good balls in, also got one shot off himself.

In other news Zamora was utterly anonymous for the entire game. Kasami did more in three minutes than he did.

Quite happy with my current team. Not changed it for a few days, except getting Enrique in, hoping he goes to Liverpool, and still deciding between Johnson and Holt.

The only player I'm not sure about is Silva. I don't have any money to upgrade him, as I'm saving 1m for Aguero to RVP, although I expect RVP to rise before GW4 when I want him. I might downgrade Silva to Downing or another 6.5m or less midfielder (I already have N'Zog, O'Hara, Moses and Sessegnon).

What do we think of Silva, or a replacement with my budget?

In all honesty, I think I need City attacking coverage for weeks 1-8. If you don't like Yaya, it has to be Silva. I see oyu have Augero, which is looking like a good option, but if you're planning on getting rid, I think Silva is a keeper.

Yeah, I reckon I'll keep Aguero. RVP will do well GW1 but I'm going to take a punt on Aguero vs a newly promoted team.

I'll probably keep Silva, like I said, I don't need the money for anything else so it's probably worth the risk.

Depends how much someone is likely to rise, and whether I have the budget.

From what I remember from the start of last season I made a few early transfers, because of price rises and not being able to cope with waiting until Friday 🙂

With money being tight at the beginning I'll probably make early transfers if I have to. The stress of worrying about whether an early transfer will get injured adds to all the other stresses of this game 🙂

That's......not true at all. It's been well publicized that Nani have every ability to play both sides, yet he was nudged out not only by Valencia...........but by PARK as well.

It's a squad game. Of course at times people are rotated based on fitness and the type of games. I have no doubt that Nani is still very much a first choice pick for Fergie.

Park was due to his work rate against the better teams and tracking back. Nani doesn't play as well on the left either. His main competition is Valencia. Although if the formation is tinkered with to play more of a 4-3-3 I think nani would suit the role better. Have to see what happens.

Park (and Valencia, really) outplayed Nani for the spot, looks to me. reunited...is the champion's league final suddenly a 'squad game,' to you?

The 4-3-3 is a very very rare thing for fergie. Come on guys, how long have we been doing this? He's Mr. Inside Out 4-4-2. I agree Nani competes primarily with Valencia, but now Young is competition as well.

For the record i'm pretty sure he is. It's clear that Young was bought as a left winger (saf said it yesterday), so that leaves Nani and Valencia vying for 1 place. Ergo, rotation risk.

Nani vs VDV for the intial games?

I think Nani will play most games, possibly more centrally with Young & Valencia on the wings? Does that sound feasible.

I know Uniteds start isnt great, but come on, they are gonna win most of their games still...score draw at the very least surely!

It doesn't. Nani has never played centrally for United, to my recollection. I'd say go with VDV instead for the initial games. He'll get more minutes and more points .

          Hmm, you're probably right.

Ours are marginally better. However in that case you're best off staying clear of the both of them. Gw 4 would be an ideal time to bring United and Spurs players in

I only said more centrally, just because whenever i see him he seems to be in the middle of the park - it was a question 🙂

So are you also saying there is no chance of Valencia Young and Nani all being on the pitch at the same time.

Only if rooney was out and Young was behind Hernandez, nani on the left and valencia on the right. That's the only way I can think of.

Well there could be a chance of that if Young plays in Rooney's position but that will rarely happen. Sir Alex has stated himself, that Young will initally be used as a wide left player

Is Barry going to continue to start? I don't ask because I want him in my team, but because if Barry and De Jong start, Yaya will be in his box-to-box role, which is awesome. If Barry does not start, then Yaya will play further back. Everyone assumes barry is going to the bench, but Mancini loves that guy.

    I'm thinking

    Barry DeJong
    Augero Yaya Silva
    Tevez

Am I way off on England Legend Gareth Barry?

Viperstripes like your team. particularly the front three

but my gamble would be to play Holt and drop Moses.

Just think Norwich will go all guns blazing and Wigan are a bit of a shambles at the beginning (most of..) the season

    Hi guys
I have been reading your comments for a few weeks now and you's seem to know what your talking about - thoughts on my current squad would be appreciated - made a couple of changes this evening - got rid of Zamora & brought in Johnson, think he'll do well if given a run in the first team. Also brought in Walters for Sinclair - midfielder playing OOP?! Thanks

    Given - Ruddy
    Baines - Kompany - Enrique(if at Pool) - Alcaraz - Simpson
    VDV - Downing - Taarabt - Walters - Moses
    RVP - Bent - A Johnson
