Blackburn Rovers finally made their first foray into the transfer market on Wednesday by completing the signing of 22-year-old striker David Goodwillie from Dundee United.

The young Scottish international joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed sum, rumoured to involve an initial fee of £2 million with various add-ons included.

Rovers fans at last have themselves a cause for optimism then, having waited patiently for the club’s owners and manager Steve Kean to bolster a squad that has already lost Phil Jones and several squad members over the summer.

In David Goodwillie, Blackburn have an outstanding prospect. Recognised as the best young player in Scotland in consecutive seasons, the Tannadice striker was hot property going into this campaign and, as Rangers prepared an improved offer for a player who has previously haunted them on the pitch, Blackburn swooped to seal a deal to bring Goodwillie south of the border.

Speaking in his first interview for the club, Goodwillie played down his early season prospects whilst clearly relishing the opportunity to impress on the Premier League stage…

“I feel ready. It’s up to the manager and we’ll see what happens. It will be massive and I think the first few games will be difficult for me…I’m really lively. I’ve got energy and I will just try my best and look to bang in a few goals.â€

The Statistics

Goodwillie made his debut for Dundee United back in 2005 at the age of 15 – the youngest player to appear for the first team in the history of the club. He went on to make numerous appearances from the bench that season and was largely used from the bench the following year before being sent out to Raith Rovers on loan in 2007. He returned to Tannadice having scored 9 goals in 21 appearances for the Second division outfit – a hint at his potential which was only realised at Dundee United in the 2009-10 season.

By that stage he’d established himself as a regular starter and notched 3 goals in the first 5 games, scoring a dozen goals by April; that was enough to earn him the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year award for that season.

He was to follow that up with the SPFA Young Player of the Year award last term. Goodwillie announced himself in 2010/11 by scoring in six consecutive matches, prompting United to slap a hefty price tag on his head. The suitors duly came circling as Goodwillie ended the season with 18 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. It was clear that his tenure at Tannadice was coming to an end.

The Prospects

Goodwillie should certainly be given every opportunity to impress. With Nikola Kalinic seemingly set for an Ewood Park exit, Steve Kean really only has Jason Roberts as a recognised striker – that shouldn’t present too big an obstacle for the burgeoning talents of Goodwillie; we should expect an early debut for the Rovers new boy and home matches against Wolves and Everton in the first three present a decent platform.

The player himself is right to be cautious over his early prospects, however. The jump from the Scotish top flight to the Premier League is a daunting one and Goodwillie will undoubtedly be faced with tougher opponents and perhaps more limited service than he is used to. The creative talents of Morten Gamst Pedersen and Junior Hoilett will be crucial to his prospects and if Steve Kean invests in an attacking outlook, Goodwillie could yet receive the ammunition which can be converted into goals.

At 5ft 9inches, Goodwillie is not target man material, but North of the Border he developed a reputation as a player who was rarely bullied off the ball and who possesses an icy quality when presented with an opportunity in front of goal. He was also capable of the spectacular, demonstrated by a stunning overhead kick in the Scotish Cup tie with Motherwell which drew comparisons with Wayne Rooney and ample praise from Dundee United boss Peter Houston…

“He’s got that ability in him and he can be anything he wants to be so long as he gets himself sorted out off the park.”

Houston’s reference to Goodwillie’s off the field entanglements is a worthy sidenote. At 22-years-old, he’s already been involved in a string of controversies, including a charge for an alleged rape – a case which hung over him last season. Goodwillie’s arrival in England and a lucrative new contract will offer opportunities for the striker to stray into trouble once more – his discipline off the field could well be crucial to his prospects on it.

Fantasy managers should expect a low-to-mid price valuation as Goodwillie arrives as a largely unknown quantity with the potential to make an impact. Having already made three appearances for Dundee United this season he will be fit and ready to announce himself on his new stage. Whether he can live up to his billing on the pitch and steer clear of trouble off it, remains to be seen.

    Team to start the season:

    Robinson (Given)

    Kompany - Enrique - A.Cole (Orr/Simpson)

Silva - Downing - Albrighton - Moses (Sessegnon)

    Rooney - Bent - Holt

Not sure about the 3 Villa players :/

What's the consensus on Kompany vs Lescott? If they were both nailed on for the season i'd be happy to pay the extra half million as i think Lescott offers MUCH more attacking threat than Kompany. I just worry about Lescott's place in the team long term

Kompany, if he stays injury free and City are as solid at the back as they were last season you can keep him in your team all season imo.

Yep that's pretty much how i see it boys. Lescott was a bit of a diamond for me at the end of last season but there is little doubt Kompany is more secure. Saying that, if it seems Lescott will at least start the season as first choice i may chance him. He can't do much worse than Kompany (points wise) and you never know, he might get a goal or two in the first few GWs

i think lescott will be ahead of toure now. toure was ahead of lescott when he was struggling with a knee problem and had a big dip in form. i don't think he's a world beater but i honestly don't think toure will just come in and shift him anymore

I reckon so too. Lescott & kompany built a good understanding together and toure's no Rio Ferdinand. Hard to imagine him walking straight back in to the best defence in the league after so long out.

        like grapefruits my friend, grapefruits.

why would Fergie completely rip up a 20 year-old transfer policy to sign a 28-year old mercenary? Especially when he has decided to keep future England players Wellbeck and Cleverly in the squad this year.
Also, ask yourself where all the rumour have eminated from? Inter. Have they protested and said he is "not for sale at any price"? no.

My best guess is they want a fee while they can still get one because he's no Zanetti and they cant rely on his loyalty. Perhaps even the player has professed a preference for a mvoe to United so his agent is complicit. And sure, FErgie might be tempted IF he is convinced Sneider would make a difference, so he isnt completley ruling it out in case of emergency.

So my team is pretty much set in terms of structure and strength.

It's now a question of filling out the fringe/rotation spots.

    The 3 defenders at the back - 4.5, 4.0, 4.0
The midfield bench sitter (Moses, Dyer, Surman, Ephraim)
    The cheap striker (Holt, Johnson)

I've been trying a secret new defense. It looks good, rotates well, and isn't too popular. Fingers crossed.

Having two attacking players from Fulham and two defenders from Villa is a bit of a conflict of interests given that they play each other in the first game of the season.

That said, they should be in the clear afterwards, so I wouldn't be overly concerned.

Really? Has Jol been playing Hughes at RB then? If Senderos is going to get starts then 4.5m is pretty decent value, but if Jol is going to break up the Hughes-Hangeland partnership then that devalues Fulham's defence as prospect. He'd be mental to split those 2 up, probably the most consistent centre back pairing in the league.

Chec,Kompany & Baines will play most weeks and the other 3 will rotate, midfield is week ino but with Taarabt on setplays, Sessegnon playing behind the striker (fingers crossed) and i think Silva will have a good season. front line speaks for itself. thats lads??

Great team. But no depth. Having both Moses and Dyer is unacceptable to me: one injury and they're both on your screen, mocking you with their combined total of 3 points. I wouldn't like that.

I'd be a little concerned about only having Cech for Chelsea's fixtures - although I'm guessing you've got an RVP/Rooney to Torres/Drogba switch lined up if a good candidate emerges from Chelsea's front line?

Otherwise fairly standard - you've done well to get Baines in. The midfield would be a little worry as you would probably be looking to play either Dyer or Moses most weeks and both are a bit of a gamble.

I like it, only major change would be that there's no value in Carragher, so I'd probably get rid of him if it was my team.

You could do a lot worse for 5mil - but I kind of agree with you.

That said, he has a strong midfield, so I imagine he'd be able to rotate between Moses and Graham - and they're both decent enough players.

on relection we have VERY similar line ups, except fot differnce of 4m sh*tters i have Baines, VDV, O'Hara and Rodaalega, whereas you have Luiz, N/Zogbia, Moses and RVP.

£12m value for Van Persie you reckon?

There's a lot of money in your strikeforce. Maybe downgrade Drogba or Aguero and put a little extra into your subs.

FPL's a squad game. Sometimes the subs make all the difference.

      There's a few:
Safe bets - O'Hara, Hunt, Jarvis, Pennant.
Risks - Sinclair, Anderson, Cabaye, Dorrans, Moses

Personally, i like Hunt, and i think Dorrans will have a good season. He showed good form under Woy.

It doesn't really work like that 🙂

But there are a number of good picks - I'd say O'Hara offers great value. Ireland could be a steal if he plays. And the likes of Ben Arfa (when fit) and Barton (if he goes somewhere where he'll be on set pieces) could also be good shouts.

Hardly a comprehensive list, you're better of flagging up a discussion about a specific player, to be honest.

If any scouts are about, i have a suggestion for something i'd like to see added to the site for this season. Could we have a weekly update of how accurate your predicted line-ups are? Could maybe have a score out of 440 each week to show how many FFS got correct.
