Carlos Tevez takes a break. Cesc Fabregas is fit and may feature in Arsenal’s weekend friendly. Steve Kean finally signs a striker, though may see his skipper depart for North London. Alan Pardew is determined to freeze out Joey Barton and Joe Cole’s name blinks on the QPR radar. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

The Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona saga drags on this morning. The midfielder has now recovered from his hamstring injury and for the past two days has trained with the Arsenal first-team ahead of Saturday evening’s friendly against Sporting Lisbon. The Gunners are reportedly preparing two first-team photographs ahead of next season- one with their skipper and one without. Fabregas is even willing to take a pay cut to ensure the move goes through but the stumbling block remains a £5m difference in each club’s valuation of the player.

Carlos Tevez is the other big name in the news this morning. City have reportedly extended their skipper’s vacation, allowing him to miss Sunday’s Community Shield clash with United. Tevez’s future remains in the balance, then, and, despite his obvious appeal in Fantasy terms, the City striker will have been crossed off many a pre-season watchlist. He now seems unlikely to begin the season in the City starting line-up when Swansea turn up at Eastlands next weekend

Chris Samba’s Blackburn future is again in doubt as the latest reports suggest Spurs have moved to the front of the queue for his services. A £6 million fee is reportedly on the table as Harry Redknapp looks to bolster his backline. Presumably the Spurs boss has Samba lined up to partner skipper Michael Dawson, with Ledley King’s knee still preventing him from making regular Premier League appearances. Should Samba arrive at White Hart Lane, it’s safe to say that Fantasy managers may look more favourably both on Samba and the Spurs back four.

Blackburn fans can at least take some consolation that their club made their first move in the transfer market yesterday, completing a deal for Dundee United striker David Goodwillie . He is set to make his debut at Kilmarnock this weekend – a full Scout Report on the Scottish starlet will follow later today.

Norwich’s Ritchie De Laet has wasted little in settling into his new surroundings, following his loan move from Man United. The defender grabbed a goal and picked up the Man of the Match award in the Canaries 1-1 draw with Real Zaragoza. At just 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) he’s one to definitely consider, for those Fantasy managers undecided over low-price defenders.

While Joey Barton has hinted at seeing out the final year of his contract on Tyneside, Alan Pardew has other ideas. The Newcastle boss is reportedly determined to ensure the midfielder offers no further disruption to first-team matters by forcing him to train alone until his departure. Jose Enrique has closed his twitter account amid reports the club are on the verge of banning all players from using the social media site.

Liverpool’s forgotten man Joe Cole has been offered the chance of a season-long loan deal by QPR. Cole is clearly out of the picture at Anfield and, providing Neil Warnock’s side can afford his wages, would certainly get plenty chances at Loftus Road. With a 6.0 price tag, he’s a budget-friendly FPL option, though many Fantasy managers will steer clear until the situation becomes a little clearer.

Now then scouts, I've got the following midfield and up to £8million to spend on my 5th midfielder, but who should I spend it on?

    Malouda, Silva, Moses, Taarabt, ????.

I don't need to spend all £8m. Thanks...

downing is a must have though he's 8.5m. He got so many points last season under the radar. He's playing for a better team and he can score. He's a workhorse too.

My first team Im feeling good about(unless some transfers happen)
    DeGea, De Vres
    Kompany, Gibbs, Luiz,Simpson, Gabbidon
    Moses, Taarbt, Watson, Sessegnon, Benayoun
    Rooney, Balotelli, RVP

I know Luiz, Benayoun and Balotelli are risks. But if all would play out well, I think its a nice team with big 4 offensive and defensive cover with some cheap punts mixed in.
If there are some things somebody thinks I dot totally got wrong please let me know.

thing about kuyt is that he really doesn't have any competition for his place on the field...liverpool don't really have any viable options on the right side besides him if they were to play a 4-4-2 with carroll and suarez up top.

the key to his scoring imo is whether kenny sets them out in a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3, with suarez on the left, carroll in the middle and kuyt on the right. if 4-4-2, i think kuyt's returns will be limited, as he's not quick enough to really create much on the wing starting from midfield. in a 4-3-3, however, he'll be picking up the ball in more advanced positions and his slower pace will be compensated for by his instincts in getting the ball around defenders. we saw this at the end of last season, with his most prolific periods coming when carroll was on the bench and kuyt was playing up front with suarez. now that carroll and suarez will both be playing most games, kuyt will have to settle for a less attacking role, but the 4-3-3 will benefit him (and his FPL owners) more than the 4-4-2.

    Given Al-Habsi
    Hangeland Luiz Kompany Orr Simpson
    Silva Nzog Taraabt Tchoyi Moses
    RVP Bent Zamora

    0.5M left in bank

Was going to get Aguero in instead of RVP, but it'd be hard getting in RVP or Rooney, if I needed to change, so starting with RVP. Got Bent in until Suarez definitely comes back into the team. Having Silva makes it relatively easy to get in a 10M mid (VDV, Young, Nani, Nasri, Kuyt, etc.), if I needed to change. Only thing I don't like about this team is a lack of attacking Chelsea coverage, although I could do Bent to Suarez and Silva to Malouda, if necessary.

Yea, Hangeland isn't the bargain he was last season. But outside of the Top 5 teams, Fulham are one of the better defensive teams in the Prem. Plus he had a good scoring season last year and looks a threat on corners and set-plays. On top of that, Fulham have very favourable opening fixtures. Might change him to Huth when Stoke's fixtures get better and I need to free up 0.5M.

I don't think that is fair at all. Kean was the one who bought Formica and we certainly play a more open and attacking style than we have in previous seasons. MGP is not a player i would consider to have 'flair' and Kalinic certainly isn't.

The depressing truth is that Roberts is the best we have at playing a lone front role. Kalinic has had numerous opportunities and is just not up to it. There is no doubt he's a better finisher than JR (who isn't?) but Kean very rarely plays 2 out and out strikers. Judging by pre season we will again play some variation on 4-3-3/4-5-1 with Roberts up top surrounded by the likes of Hoilett, Rochina, Formica and Dunny

Eh, there's the problem. Wish I had a free £0.5m to spend. Where would I make the switch on this roster?

            G: Given (Ruddy)
D: Luiz, Kompany, O'Shea, Hughes (Simpson)
M: Downing, Toure, N'Zogbia, Sinclair (Moses)
            F: Rooney, Bent (Odemwingie)

I used to have Taraabt and Tiote instead of Moses and Sinclair, but Newcastle is imploding so I booted Tiote and made the switch.

    Just wondering about your spreadsheet...

The point of it is to strip players of their bonus points from last season and then see how they ranked first of all without BPs (on the right).

Then you can see their total points from the EA index to see how they performed in that sense (on the left) and try and judge if they will be rewarded with more BPs or not this season.

But those averages are taken from the total season score, right?
Just not sure how they tell us who would've been the top 3 ea ranked in individual premier league games (I.e. how many bonus points they would've got)

Seems as though you could have the top ea average ranking without getting many bonus points... If, say, you were a consistently top 6 performer but rarely top 3

It isn't much use without the individual ea weekly breakdowns. As people have said before, a player could amass loads of ea points by playing every minute and consistently being about the 5th or 6th best ea player every match. This would result in 0 bps though as only the top 3 get bonus points

ok well here's my take on it... let's imagine for clarity that ea points are marked out of ten...

Yes dms and defenders get points for their defensive work. I'd say this means they're likely to get a solid score of, say, 7 or 8/10.

Strikers and midfielders would probably get much lower scores when they don't score or assist... maybe as low as 4/10.

However, when they grab a goal and or assist, and make some key passes, they get 9/10... the times a striker or midfielder really excels are quite rare per player. But per match there are usually one or two key high performers who get 9/10.

This means their average scores are lower than defenders but still it is these key players who will mop up the bonus points for excelling in a game.
The exceptions, imo, are likely to be low scoring games.

So I'd say these stats are great for companyong defenders so you know which defender will get bps in a low scoring game... but they're not all that useful for comparing defensive players to attacking players.

          Do you disagree?

Now I've got a handle on it - yes. I think you need to look at the six rating categories again:

            1. Winning Performance - Players receive points for time on the pitch in a successful team. Players will receive more points if they play the full 90 minutes in a winning team. This index shares league points won by a team between the players according to the minutes they are on the pitch. Only time on the pitch and points scored are taken into account in this first index.

            2. Player's Performance per match - Players receive points for positive influences on a winning performance (shots, tackles, clearances, saves etc). Players have points taken away from their score for negative actions such as shots off target and yellow/red cards.

            3. Appearances - Players receive points for minutes on the pitch. The number of points won by ALL teams in the league are divided amongst the players according to the number of minutes they have played. This is similar to the first Index but this does not take into account the result of a match, it awards points purely for playing time.

            4. Goals scored - Players are awarded points for scoring goals. These points are only given to the goal scorer.

            5. Assists - Players awarded points for assists. These points are only awarded to players that make the assist.

            6. Clean sheets - Allocates points for clean sheets to the whole team. The proportionate split of the points is weighted according to the player's position. Therefore a goalkeeper will be awarded a greater proportion of the points for keeping a clean sheet than a striker. The points are also awarded proportionately to the time spent on the pitch.

The grey area here is No. 2. If this particular index is very important, it would explain why Neville and de Jong have appeared from nowhere. So if you use a number divisible by six instead of ten ... 18, for instance, 3 of those points will always go to the busiest player in the winning team. Now if that match is anything worse than 2 - 2, the player receiving those points has every chance of matching or surpassing the goal scorers, and or the assisters, and thereby hoovering up the maximum bonus on offer for the purpose of the fantasy score ... that is how I'm seeing it at the present ...

Ok wo put it this way...

If 2 players got the same number of ea points in a season, who would get the most bonus points?

Imo it is the player with the most erratic scoring (higher peaks and lower troughs) because they'll have more top 3 performances (and more terrible performances too)

I'd bet my bottom dollar attackers have more erratic scoring throughout a season.

I would say you are right. However, the number of attacking midfielders is lower in the Ea Ratings, 35 to 43; and the number of strikers is also lower, 15 to 16. Moreover, the type of striker is different, Berbatov appears to do better than either Drogba or Tevez, and the biggest gainers are Campbell and Torres ...

So thats not per game it's average per game.

So what I'm saying is it doesn't take into account the differences between these 2 types of players:

                  A: 10, 2, 10, 2, 10, 2...
                  B: 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6

These 2 players got the same ea ranking per game, but player A got a lot more fpl bonus points.

No it doesn't. That information isn't available.

What it does do is compare players within clubs, so for Arsenal RVP was top then Nasri then Fabregas.

Even if you score isn't consistent by the end of the season it will level out so this would give a fair idea of which players will be the bonus darlings of their clubs.

We can also have a better idea about which defenders will get bps in the event of a 0-0

That's exactly what I'm not doing. I have stripped out the bonus points, and ordered all the players according to their nett scores. I have compared this result with the EA estimates, which appear to include their own bonus points, to see what differences there are. Overall, it seems clear to me that sheer goals are a much less important factor than almost everybody else assumes, and that assists are slightly more important. The area of "Playing Points" is far from clear, but seems to me to be nearly as significant as assists. That is the only viable explanation I can currently give for the surge up the EA rankings of the defensive midfielders, and of certain types of defenders ...

Other ants will often eat ants.

An example of this are the Fire Ants (Solenopsis spp). Some species of Pheidole have even developed specialized responses to Fire Ant raids. The Pheidole will go all-out to kill the Fire Ant scouts, and if that fails, abandon their nests along with their brood before the Fire Ants can steal the brood.

Thanks...I wonder if there's any chance he starts at 5.0 this year (of course I'm assuming he'll be in the starting 11 at WB - am I wrong here?). If so, he'd rotate quite nicely with a Wolves midfielder.
