Wenger Unclear On Latest Van Persie Scare

Robin Van Persie is at the centre of another injury scare on the eve of the season after suffering an ankle knock against Benfica on Saturday.

The Dutchman was forced off the field in the first-half of the 2-1 defeat having given the Gunners the lead with a clinical finish from Kieran Gibbs’ cut-back.

Following the goal, Van Persie suffered a knock on the ankle following a clumsy challenge – the striker played on but was withdrawn at half-time with Marouane Chamakh seeing action.

The extent of Van Persie’s problem remains unclear, Wenger gave us this vague summary in his post-match comments…

“It is an ankle problem, I don’t know how bad it is.”

We will presumably learn more on the “problem” over the next few days and Fantasy managers will be hoping for some clarity from the Arsenal camp prior to Saturday’s squad selection deadline.

Arsenal also suffered further setbacks on the day with both Gibbs and Thomas Vermaelen suffering thigh and back injuries respectively.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Couldn't help but notice that Chelsea have all but signed Lukaku. Anyone care to speculate on how it will impact the Chelsea front line?

    He seems to be right out of the Drogba role - except a bit taller. Surely he hasn't been signed to sit on the bench?

    Bit of a strange one as I can't see him ever playing out wide and Chelsea already have a headache in picking between Drogba and Torres.

        Yep - it's classic replace before you sell tactics. Lukaku has potential, but is still pretty raw. He's been tearing it up, but it's still the Belgian League.

        From the chatter last season, Drogba seemed as if he might be on his way out, so if/when the same happens this/next season, then the bargaining takes on a different slant.

      He won't feature too much- he certainly won't be favoured over the likes of Drogba, Torres and even Sturridge. He's one for the near future and next to everyone knows about him so they got him in now before it'd be too late.

          As a Man Utd fan I am laughing. Both Man Utd and Chelsea have too many striker options but it's not being talked up as a massive headache at Man Utd- love supporting a team where there's great team spirit and no messing with Fergie in charge. 🙂

          +1 Drogba made a big difference when he came on against Rangers - he is still a class act and hard one to topple.

          but it does seem a little hasty doesn it - they already have at least 2 players fighting over every forward position, so unless Drogba's mvoe to Marseilles (or PSG?) is lined up theres gonna be some sad faces warming that bench

          Yeah I guess it depends with pens. Charlie Adam got loads of pens for Blackpool after they were promoted so he was definitely worth it.

          On the other hand, Wolves only got awarded three last season. So I guess it comes down to deciding how many you reckon they'll win?

      PSG may have splurged this summer, but they've generally splurged on young talent.
      Matuidi, Gameiro, Menez, Pastore etc.

      Anelka would obviously fit the residency rules of the French league, so I'm have thought someone would be bidding though.

      I can't see him getting the goals he got last year again this season.

      Blackpool were incredibly attacking and DJ was their centre forward. QPR won't play with any of the abandon that Blackpool did and they certainly won't score as many, so I can see his returns going down.

      I wouldn't get him. I think Rafael will start off the season in RB but then be rotated with Fabio/Smalling/Jones.

      If they get a run of games then there's some bargains to be had but it's a risky business!

      Adam is a safebet with Gerard out. But too expensive in my opinion. Id go with Carrol from LIV - had a good pre-season and deliveries from midfield this season should be much improved this season. He is an explosive player and really good in the air.

    Hey guys
    WHat do you all think of Rodallega's chances at the beginning of the season?
    He's up against three newly promoted teams and was one of the highest shot takers last season though he finished with less than 10 goals.
    Counter point to his potentially promising start is the fact that he hasnt played much pre season and with Nzog gone who knows how wigan will do. oh and that - he plays for Wigan.
    Is 2goals in the first three expecting too much or do you think its an aggressive possibility?

        From what ive read on the forums, QPR is the least attacking of the promoted teams and one expected to gone down again. Id like to wait and see before i back anyone from the newly promoted teams to start. The only one i have is Sinclair and i want to see how he does against Man City. Will be a tough game but will help indicate the type of game we can expect from the winger.

          I can't see Toure going straight back in after six months out and the position should be Lescott's to claim especially after his form last year.

          I'd imagine you should be fine with him for a while - but in an ideal world I'd rather have a Chelsea defender than a City one early on for their fixtures.

          Guess it comes down to whether you prefer a Chelsea/Norwich combo or a Wigan/City combo.

            Yeah, I'll probably stick with Ivanovic and Kompany. As much as I think Ivanovic will be a regular starter and nick the odd goal I can't help but think I should be getting Cole instead.

      You could go with Holt and Malouda and have money to invest elsewhere?

          See if you ditch Lampard for Malouda and keep Holt you could take Ferguson out, because he's just wasting a position in your team.

          There are a few decent options at 5.5 and if you free up cash from your defense you could lose Ferguson for a player who is genuinely worth having - possible O'Hara or similar.

          taraabt hasn't made much of an impact preseason. id go with sessegnon despite fixtures. Playing off Gyan with and impressive preseason. should be hitting the ground running. also the addition of new players this time round, am expecting a much better performance from Bruce's Sunderland this season.
