After a long anxious summer away, our regular scan of the fixture list makes a return.

If you’re new to these parts or if perhaps all the sun and sangria have gone to your head, then, in a nutshell, this regular Monday article examines the fixtures and presents our view on those teams with favourable runs or absolute horror shows. We even tease you with a few player recommendations.

Introductions over then, let’s fill our boots with the opening gameweeks.

The Highs…

QPR

Very few are backing QPR to make an impact on their return to the top flight. Neil Warnock’s men however have one big factor in their favour – the opening set of fixtures could hardly have fallen better for them.

Our “Next Six Fixture Ticker” (in your sidebar) displays a sea of blue with no real intimidating opponent on the horizon; there’s room for a degree of confidence in Rangers, then.

While the purse strings have limited Warnock’s summer pickings to humble captures such as Jay Bothroyd, Danny Gabbidon and DJ Campbell, by sealing the future of the Adel Taarabt, Rangers have assured at least some interest from Fantasy managers this season. Taarabt, with set-piece dominance and goals and assists dripping from him, will surely tempt early investment for what is an undeniably favourable opening to the season.

Aston Villa

While both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing have departed, Villa have drafted in Fantasy favourite Charles N’Zogbia to fill the void and turn the heads of Fantasy managers. Darren Bent remains the key figure on the teamsheet, however, and it’s his prospects over the opening spell of the season that look the most intriguing.

Certainly the fixture list suggests that Bent and Villa could start strongly. Indeed, in the mid-term Villa have good fixtures for a considerable time and could prove strong value for several months.

While a trip to the Cottage is far from easy on opening day, Villa’s upcoming encounters with Blackburn, Wolves and Newcastle -all notoriously bad travellers- in the opening five gameweeks should give Alex McLeish every chance of winning over the Villa faithful. Bent, N’Zogbia and a supporting cast that could include a back four reinforced by the arrival of Shay Given and McLeish’s own stoic defensive outlook, all look tempting.

Fulham

Martin Jol is another manager faced with winning over a new set of fans – like McLeish, though, he has been given an relatively easy ride in the opening month.

The opener with Villa looks winnable, as does the second home clash with Blackburn in Gameweek 4. Sandwiched in between Fulham have trips to Wolves and Newcastle – stubborn opponents but fixtures that are amongst the best away games in the division.

While Brede Hangeland, John Arne Riise and Clint Dempsey (6.5, 6.0 and 8.5 in the FPL) have been given fairly hefty price tags, there is still value in Jols’s squad that could come to fruition early on.

Bobby Zamora and Aaron Hughes offer assured mid-price cover at both ends of the field with Damien Duff offering midfield promise for those who baulk at the prospect of shelling out for Dempsey’s goal threat.

Chelsea

Chelsea had the most astounding of opening fixtures last season and duly delivered major Fantasy hauls with Florent Malouda and Didider Drogba both ablaze. While things don’t fall quite so nicely for them this time around, they’re still presented with three very favourable Stamford Bridge encounters which appear to offer strong returns all round.

West Brom, Norwich and Swansea are the first three opponents facing Andre Villas-Boas in front of the Chelsea supporters. Those matches balance out a couple of testing away trips – the opener at Stoke and the Gameweek 5 visit to Old Trafford.

Frank Lampard has the pedigree to provide but Fantasy managers are still showing caution given his changing role in the Chelsea midfield. Malouda perhaps offers greater potential – particularly given that his start should be more assured with pre-season starlet Daniel Sturridge sidelined through suspension for the first three fixtures.

Also Consider…

Newcastle – there’s a whole lot going on at Newcastle that may cause you to err on the side of caution – but the fixtures fall nicely with a strong run to follow the opener against Arsenal.

Everton – the Premier League’s most famous false starters are handed a rather peachy spell between Gameweek’s 2-5 including some strong Goodison fixtures.

Wigan – Forget last year’s Mauro Boselli debacle and the day one spanking to Blackpool – take a look at the first three games and think again.

The Lows…

Man United

United’s impressive comeback in yesterday’s Community Shield will doubtless see their Fantasy assets earn renewed consideration – Nani in particular. The fixture list certainly offers food for thought however, with Alex Ferguson handed an evil opening to the season that will immediately test the credentials.

A trip to the Hawthorns to meet a Baggies side masterminded by the canny Roy Hodgson isn’t easy – home games against Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea then follow, with a tricky encounter at the Reebok in between. Clean sheets look unlikely, perhaps, but such opponents may just draw the sting from United’s attacking players, providing every incentive for Wayne Rooney, Nani and company to produce the kind of goalscoring display shown at Wembley on Sunday.

Bolton

There is an early cloud of concern gathered over the Reebok stadium. The Trotters have lost two of last season’s most potent goal threats – Daniel Sturridge and Johan Elmander – whilst they’ve been cruelly robbed of Chung Yong-Lee’s trickery by a pre-season leg-break.

Owen Coyle could do with a friendly fixture list to start off with, then, but he’s unfortunately been handed an evil array of opponents. Fixtures against four of last year’s top five in their opening spell will surely postpone any initial Fantasy interest in the Trotters squad.

Stoke

Stoke City’s strength is at the Britannia – that’s where they often seal the precious points that push them up amongst the higher echelons of the table. Sadly for Tony Pulis’ side, their opening set of fixtures hands them three of the most difficult home games over the first five Gamweeks. Chelsea get matters rolling on Sunday, with Liverpool and United also due at the Britannia by the end of September. Trips to Norwich, West Brom and Sunderland could offer returns but Fantasy managers need to be wary of Stoke’s away form – they’ve previously struggled badly for returns on the road.

Be Wary of…

Swansea – three “mission impossible” away trips balance out a set of Liberty Stadium clashes to provide a topsy-turvy start to life in the Premier League.

Tottenham – United, City, Liverpool and Arsenal all lie in wait in the opening six Gameweeks. Spurs will likely need to capitalise on away trips to Wolves and Wigan if they are to keep in touch with the top six early on.

If you put a lot of money in one sector of the team, then it takes a lot of engineering to re-establish balance and that costs points (unless you use the WC).

As a change to RMT's, here's the top valued midfielders this season based a repeat of last year's returns on a Points-Per-Fantasy-Pound invested:

    Player 2010-11 Cost PPFP
    N'Zogbia 167 7.5 22.27 +
    Jarvis 133 6.0 22.17 +
    Barton 131 6.0 21.83 (pending club joined)
    Brunt 130 6.0 21.67 +
Adam 192 9.0 21.33 - not on penalties, less BPs
    Henderson 133 6.5 20.46 - potentially less games
    Vaughan 110 5.5 20.00 - unlikely to be a starter for Sunderland?
    Elmohamady 109 5.5 19.82 - classed a defender last year
    Nani 198 10.0 19.80 - rotation
    Dempsey 168 8.5 19.76 - Zamora/Dembele/Johnson
    Gutierrez 116 6.0 19.33 +
    Downing 163 8.5 19.18
    Thomas 105 5.5 19.09
    Etherington 124 6.5 19.08

The stand out for me is Brunt who I didn't think had a great season last year. At 6m he could be a more reliable fantasy target than the likes of Sinclair perhaps.

That seems to be the theme. Prices in midfield are so high this year that players have to perform as well as they did last year to be of any value. We may see the likes of promoted players, and players out with injury last year being the bargain picks this time around.

Trying to decide which 4.5M defender to rotate with Simpson + QPR 4.0. Who have people gone for?

Looking on the ratemyteam.co.uk site they have Alcaraz scoring quite alot better than Bramble, even when comparing the same fixtures. Why do you think that is? Surely if Bramble is nailed on to start then Sunderland are more likely to keep clean sheets than Wigan?

Anelka, people aren't paying much attention to him, but with a front three that we are playing, he's almost guaranteed games. Especially with Sturridge out and Kalou s*it. Just because he isnt out central striker doesnt mean he wont get goals and assists.

Here's the value ratings for midfielders > 7m this season:

    N'Zogbia 22.27
    Adam 21.33
    Nani 19.80
    Dempsey 19.76
    Downing 19.18
    Yaya Toure 18.25
    Malouda 17.71
    Kuyt 17.70
    Meireles 17.07
    Van der Vaart 16.50

Realistically, I think we can only expect better returns from N'Zogbia and Downing. What do you think?

Here's a few interesting striker comparisons:

    Odemwingie West Brom 171 7.5 22
    Davies K Bolton 132 6.5 20
    Rodallega Wigan 123 6.5 19
    Bent Aston Villa 158 10.0 16
    Van Persie Arsenal 157 12.0 13
    Hoilett Blackburn 71 6.0 12
    Rooney Man Utd 142 12.0 12
    Torres Chelsea 128 11.0 12

Bent gets you 16 points for every million spent. Think he'll perform better this year than last?

Rooney essential? If he performs like last year, he's only going to get you 12 points for every million spent.

I think Bent will perform worse and that those buying Rooney are banking on him to score higher than last season. He was stuck out on the wing and out of form for quite some time last season.

That's the key to this isn't it... identifying not necessarily the best players but those you can pair with the more expensive players that are great value due to their price.

I expect Rooney to score in the 160-180 bracket which makes him reasonable value, even at 12m. But, I'd also pick out the likes of Hoilett, Doyle and Gyan who really don't need perform much better to be stand out cheaper options.

Odemwingie looks overpriced at first glance. But comparing him to other forwards and even if he returned 120-140 points, he'd still be excellent value.

Rodallega is another one that's had criticism for his finishing, but at 6.5m, if he repeats last year's returns he's a perfectly viable third striker.

Have you seen Bent & kdavies record for the past few seasons? They can both score against anyone so dont see them letting up providing they get the service.

I,m hoping rooney does not let me down again after i started with him last season. Just bloody wish he get back to being up front or is that no longer the case?

I think penalties will bolster his goals return. Is all round 110% effort, influence and involvement should mean more bonus points too.

He's always been big but he's looking a beast physically this year too.

Defenders get the value treatment now:

    Player Team Points Cost Value
    Hughes Fulham 129 5.0 25.80
    Bardsley Sunderland 123 5.0 24.60
    Johnson Wolves 120 5.0 24.00
    Hangeland Fulham 154 6.5 23.69
    Riise Fulham 140 6.0 23.33
    Huth Stoke City 138 6.0 23.00
    Distin Everton 124 5.5 22.55
    Baines Everton 178 8.0 22.25
    Skrtel Liverpool 126 6.0 21.00
    Enrique Newcastle 105 5.0 21.00
    Ivanovic Chelsea 144 7.0 20.57
    Samba Blackburn 111 5.5 20.18
    Cole A Chelsea 150 7.5 20.00

Not many surprises apart from the lack of interest in Roger Johnson, who I expect to score higher this season.

Riise's 140 points is my (optimisticslly) forecasted points return 😉

I've thought about Johnson, think Wolves will do better this season and they have quite nice fixtures. What's he like goal threat wise though?

Scored 2, assisted 2 last year. He's quite wiry and in the Birmingham side there were the likes of Ridgewell, Dann and Jerome who would've received special attention at set pieces.

He's no Vidic, but you can expect 2 or 3 goals I would've thought.

Nice. Defender values like this probably more helpful than attackers because there is little or no 'captain' factor

Agreed. I think it's interesting seeing players like Bardsley who many may expect to score higher this year with Sunderland having strengthened over the Summer, and to balance this with the likes of Huth who may not be expected to score so many and so is unlikely to offer value at this year's price.

Players also to consider would be Kompany who would've been close to topping this value list as a defender last year, and Lescott if he's a regular.

Enrique at Liverpool should also prove a bargain.

On an unrelated note saying 'captain factor' reminded me of The Krypton Factor. If Gordon Burns was a defender in FPL im sure he represent fantastic value.

i would keep an eye out on foley too, especially if he plays in midfield again, likes to venture forward.

I think johnson plays in the same style of rushing forward, rather than waiting for set pieces.

I've a soft spot for Foley after having him auto-sub into my team on a couple of occasions when he'd scored! I looked out for him in pre-season but he hasn't been playing as far as I can make out. Don't know why this would be considering he was the Wolves captain for a while?

In times of economic crises, crime rate goes up. The frustration at unemployment and financial pressures just needs a trigger. A perception of racism in the local police force doesn't help of course - whether it's real or perceived.

      It's just very, very sad.

          I think you need a Kompany / Lescott / A Cole / Vidic / Baines type, yes.

Perhaps downgrade Malouda to Benayoun, or Gervinho to Zamora/Rodallega/Doyle to finance this?
