Nani looks a nailed-on starter for next week, says Sir Alex Ferguson. Liverpool are hopeful on Glen Johnson’s fitness. Darren Bent uses twitter to explain his shoulder injury while Man City coach David Platt questions Carlos Tevez’s participation in next Monday’s home game with Swansea. With only five days to go before the big kick-off, here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Nani’s two-goal performance in yesterday’s Community Shield has earned him a starting place in game week 1. Buoyed by the winger‘s contribution in the 3-2 comeback win over Man City, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the game that the player will be part of his first XI at West Brom next Sunday:

“You have seen Nani’s form in pre-season and again here. He will start the season.”

The United boss was also full of praise for young Tom Cleverley, whose half-time introduction at the expense of Michael Carrick gave his side an extra attacking impetus from central midfield.

Liverpool are confident Glen Johnson will make the season opener at home to Sunderland. The right-back limped out of Saturday’s game with Valencia with a thigh injury and has subsequently been ruled out of this week’s England squad but Kenny Dalglish is optimistic Johnson will make it for the weekend.

Fabio Aurelio reckons he could play a big part in Liverpool’s season. Despite the club being linked with Jose Enrique throughout the summer, the Brazilian says he’s ready to step up and nail down the left-back role:

My problem has been the injuries and I’m aware of that but I still believe I can be better than in the past and more available. This season we have our games mostly once a week so it could be a good season for me to have a run of games and fill that gap.

Man City coach David Platt has admitted it’s unlikely that Carlos Tevez will be taking part in the club’s home game with Swansea next Monday. While the striker’s future at the Etihad Stadium remains uncertain, Platt said of the Argentine:

“Just finished the Copa America and had three weeks off, which the players need. There’s only eight-nine days before that game [against Swansea], I think it’ll be tight. But Carlos is a strange one, in the sense he doesn’t need a lot of time to get back fit – so we’ll see. Once he’s back in the building, we’ll look at things then.”

Alex McLeish is confident James Collins will be fit for the start of the season. The centre-half injured his back in training last week and has been withdrawn from the Wales squad for the game against Australia on Wednesday. Collins has been one of Aston Villa’s stand-out players this pre-season and Big Eck said :

James has injured his back. He did it a few days ago to be fair and he thought he was okay in training on Friday. But I think the intensity of training over the last few days just flared it up and he was a bit stiff. Therefore, we didn’t want to risk him. It’s a worry – but knowing the type of character James is, I’m sure he’ll be determined to be on that pitch at Craven Cottage.

Darren Bent will miss England’s midweek match with a shoulder injury. The Villa forward used the medium of twitter to announce his injury but his withdrawal seems merely precautionary and he expects to be fit for the weekend game at Fulham. Bent tweeted :

Gutted I had to pull out of the England squad. The shoulder has been bothering me and wanna make sure I’m fully fit for the big KO next week.

Roy Hodgson is hopeful Peter Odemwingie will recover from an ankle knock to face Man United at the Hawthorns on Sunday. Last season’s top-scorer picked up the injury in a recent friendly with Bristol City and has yet to feature since for West Brom. Speaking ahead of yesterday’s game with Parma, Hodgson said of the injury:

We were hoping it would recover in time for today’s game but it didn’t. Now we’re hoping it won’t go beyond next week. Ankle injuries can take time and I wouldn’t want to put a timescale on it. All I want to say is the medical staff are very optimistic he’ll recover, so I’ve got to be optimistic. I’m sure he’ll be desperate to play against United and we’ll be happy to put him in the team if he’s fit.

Roberto Martinez may be without the talents of James McCarthy for the season opener at home to Norwich. The midfielder picked up an ankle injury in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Villarreal and Wigan are sweating on his availability. Good news for Martinez was the continued good form of Victor Moses- the winger scored the only goal, to net for the third game running.

Steve Bruce looks set to add another player to the Sunderland ranks this summer. The Black Cats boss has already snapped up nine players during the close season but intends to make that ten with the capture of winger James McClean from Derry City in a deal in the region of £1m.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

You have a number of risky players:
Spurs have tricky opening fixtures, VDV is not 100% fit. Barton is still transfer listed (although he tweeted that he would play. Suarez also not certain to start (but will get loads of points this season). Young is good but expensive - Nani for the same price is better IMO.

Yep, he's probably the safest bet from the United def. Saying that though, Cole is a way better fantasy prospect and has consistently outscored him over the years. Not totally sure why, but probably because Utd usually play with two quick wingers, and Evra never seems to be the one to deliver the final ball like Cole or Baines would.....

Oh and Chelsea have much better fixtures of course

Moses seems almost essential to him given his price and I'd like to get Nani if I can fit him into my team. the other major one is Benayoun but I don't fancy his chances of playing as many minutes as the likes of Malouda and Lampard.

There's not too many others with relatively low ownership so I can't class players like Taarabt or Sinclair in a bandwagon category. The only other I can think of as a possible shout is Formica, but then again if you want a Blackburn midfielder Dunn may be a safer bet.

Sorry if this has already been covered but I've been away for long. This is from the rules section about assists.

    'Assists

Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal.'

Is this a change from last year? The 'alter the direction significantly' thing is gone and replaced with this idea about every touch outside the penalty area makes sure it's no assist?

They way I read it was that if a def delfects the assist in the box it would still be an assist but not outside. Did you see that you also get an assist for winning a freekick that results in a goal.

My friend named his team RVP XI. He stubbornly keeps him in all season, injured or not.

Meant he had a shocking team value, and probably about 100 points less than he could have had by the end of the season. (especially the season before last).

    Advise appreciated on below

    a) Nani / Drogba / Dzeko

    or

    b) Lampard / Rooney / Ramsey

With a) I get the extra £££ and I think Dzeko could be a good (c) for 1st game but run the risk or Drogba rotation. b) costs more but Lamps and Rooney on pendals and Ramsey should be a good punt early on... Any ideas?

I like it....keep an eye on RVP injury, also Kompany, Lescott and A cole may be a little too much in defence. It is much harder this year for defenders to get bonus. May drop one of Lescott and Kimpany and use that to upgrade one of Moses or Hoolahan.

      Like DJ campbell espcially.

i know... but i think it might make a difference to get some cleanies this season, since the proven fpl value midfielders are too expensive... i prefer to spend on proven defender with good fixtures in the beggining, and than change and upgrade the midfielders to the one s who are scoring...

Ok here's my latest of many rejigs following a shift of cash from defence to mid and attack. Appreciate any thoughts.

    given - ruddy
Distin - Kompany - Senderos (Bramble - Simpson)
    Nani - Malouda - Nzogbia - Moses (O'Hara)
Rooney - Carroll - DJ campbell.

My reason for DJ campbell is that out of all the 5.5m strikers he actually has some very good FPL stats to back him up. For that reason I rate him as a better prospect than Holt.

    Moses is another punt

Senderos is too...4.5 for a fulham defender who I'm praying will play is a good move...may alter my thinking. Any particular suggestions for cheap defenders?

It looks good Jonty, gambles have to be taken somewhere and those look to me to have great chances.
Unlike many I find it difficult to tell people they're wrong before the season even starts.
Given the fixtures you should have a chance of being there or thereabouts.

I prefer Aurelio to Distin right now. Everton are slow starters and haven't kept a single cleanie in pre-season

Aurelio looks nailed on for Liverpool as their only leftback now he's back

also, Brown seems to be playing more than bramble

I quite like it. Not sure about DJ though. 12 (or 13?) goals last year was very good, BUT Blackpool were all out attack. Can't see him reaching that sort of figure with QPR this year. Although I may be very wrong on that.

With regards to the defence, I've spent most of today doing exactly that, moving cash from a pretty heavy defence to the midfield/striker departments. I've now got:

Lescott as a mainstay. I think his goal threat means he's a better pick that Kompany, at least until Toure is back.

Then Figueroa and Elokobi rotating for one spot:
NOR, FUL, QPR, TOT, QPR, TOT, NEWC, BOL, SWA, FUL, WIG.

With Warnock and Gabbidon rotating for the other spot:
BOL/ful, BLA, WOL, NEW, NEW, AVL/qpr, WIG, BLA, WBA, sun, NOR.

It's a bit bargain basement, but I quite like it and it frees up lots of funds for the attack. GW11/12 (if I can hold out) it's WC time, and reassess from there.

thanks everyone...yes, I too feel much better moving cash to mid and attack. Thanks in partic Bubbles for those defender thoughts.

I like the fulham - newcastle- sunderland combo....wigan wolves could work. I quite like the idea of Elokobi as well...will look more at some of these rotations. He is a freakish man mountain of a defender. He seems like a nice bloke tho....if he could somehow get some tips in being menacing from Vinnie Jones he would be the most scary defender in the prem.

    Guys.

I'm having a real problem squeezing the big guns into my team this year (I bet everyone is)

Originally I planned to put Holt (5.5M) in as a 3rd attacker, but I need a 4.5M Forward really to make my team work...who is the best option?

    Many Thanks
