Nani looks a nailed-on starter for next week, says Sir Alex Ferguson. Liverpool are hopeful on Glen Johnson’s fitness. Darren Bent uses twitter to explain his shoulder injury while Man City coach David Platt questions Carlos Tevez’s participation in next Monday’s home game with Swansea. With only five days to go before the big kick-off, here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Nani’s two-goal performance in yesterday’s Community Shield has earned him a starting place in game week 1. Buoyed by the winger‘s contribution in the 3-2 comeback win over Man City, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the game that the player will be part of his first XI at West Brom next Sunday:

“You have seen Nani’s form in pre-season and again here. He will start the season.”

The United boss was also full of praise for young Tom Cleverley, whose half-time introduction at the expense of Michael Carrick gave his side an extra attacking impetus from central midfield.

Liverpool are confident Glen Johnson will make the season opener at home to Sunderland. The right-back limped out of Saturday’s game with Valencia with a thigh injury and has subsequently been ruled out of this week’s England squad but Kenny Dalglish is optimistic Johnson will make it for the weekend.

Fabio Aurelio reckons he could play a big part in Liverpool’s season. Despite the club being linked with Jose Enrique throughout the summer, the Brazilian says he’s ready to step up and nail down the left-back role:

My problem has been the injuries and I’m aware of that but I still believe I can be better than in the past and more available. This season we have our games mostly once a week so it could be a good season for me to have a run of games and fill that gap.

Man City coach David Platt has admitted it’s unlikely that Carlos Tevez will be taking part in the club’s home game with Swansea next Monday. While the striker’s future at the Etihad Stadium remains uncertain, Platt said of the Argentine:

“Just finished the Copa America and had three weeks off, which the players need. There’s only eight-nine days before that game [against Swansea], I think it’ll be tight. But Carlos is a strange one, in the sense he doesn’t need a lot of time to get back fit – so we’ll see. Once he’s back in the building, we’ll look at things then.”

Alex McLeish is confident James Collins will be fit for the start of the season. The centre-half injured his back in training last week and has been withdrawn from the Wales squad for the game against Australia on Wednesday. Collins has been one of Aston Villa’s stand-out players this pre-season and Big Eck said :

James has injured his back. He did it a few days ago to be fair and he thought he was okay in training on Friday. But I think the intensity of training over the last few days just flared it up and he was a bit stiff. Therefore, we didn’t want to risk him. It’s a worry – but knowing the type of character James is, I’m sure he’ll be determined to be on that pitch at Craven Cottage.

Darren Bent will miss England’s midweek match with a shoulder injury. The Villa forward used the medium of twitter to announce his injury but his withdrawal seems merely precautionary and he expects to be fit for the weekend game at Fulham. Bent tweeted :

Gutted I had to pull out of the England squad. The shoulder has been bothering me and wanna make sure I’m fully fit for the big KO next week.

Roy Hodgson is hopeful Peter Odemwingie will recover from an ankle knock to face Man United at the Hawthorns on Sunday. Last season’s top-scorer picked up the injury in a recent friendly with Bristol City and has yet to feature since for West Brom. Speaking ahead of yesterday’s game with Parma, Hodgson said of the injury:

We were hoping it would recover in time for today’s game but it didn’t. Now we’re hoping it won’t go beyond next week. Ankle injuries can take time and I wouldn’t want to put a timescale on it. All I want to say is the medical staff are very optimistic he’ll recover, so I’ve got to be optimistic. I’m sure he’ll be desperate to play against United and we’ll be happy to put him in the team if he’s fit.

Roberto Martinez may be without the talents of James McCarthy for the season opener at home to Norwich. The midfielder picked up an ankle injury in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Villarreal and Wigan are sweating on his availability. Good news for Martinez was the continued good form of Victor Moses- the winger scored the only goal, to net for the third game running.

Steve Bruce looks set to add another player to the Sunderland ranks this summer. The Black Cats boss has already snapped up nine players during the close season but intends to make that ten with the capture of winger James McClean from Derry City in a deal in the region of £1m.

    Al Habsi (Ruddy)
    Kompany, Hughes, Orr (Simpson, Wilkinson)
    Lampard, Silva, Downing, N'Zogbia, Moses
    Rooney, Suarez (Lita)

My question is does anyone know any reason why any of my 1st team wouldn't play (excluding Suarez I'll change him to Carroll if theres no confirmation of him definitely starting. As you can see my bench is atrocious with even worse fixtures, so don't want to take much of a gamble with anyone. I know my defence is pretty weak but I want to take this approach this year as a lot seems weighted on attack. Should I consider downgrading Lampard for Nani? Any advice welcome ta... Mon the tic!

    Who should be XXX??

    a) Given Ruddy
Lescott, XXX, Simpson, N Taylor, Orr
    Nani, Silva, N'Zogbia, Sinclair, Moses
    RVP, Drogba, DJ

    Bank = 6.5m

    a) Luiz
    b) a 5.5m defender (best option?) and leave 1m to do Silva -> Malouda in GW2
    c) Kompany and bank 0.5m
    d) something else (please suggest)

    Thanks

Hughes is 5m which would give you 1.5 for Malouda and .5 to upgrade another of your defenders

I was picking Kuyt on the basis of the bonus pts system this year in that if e plays e will defo get bonus marks most weeks..

        Get out:

        Malouda/ Campell/ Senderos

RE: Hugo Rodallega- He played in 3 of Colombia's 4 Cope America games and was a sub in each, playing a total of about 130-140 minutes. The last game he played in was on July 16.
Analysis: He didn't play that much in CA, but he was training, which means his fitness should have been good to that point. Give him a two week break and he could have been training again last week.
Will he play? I think Martinez would like to start strong. That said, he may see if the Latics can handle Norwich without using Roda, but would surely have him on the bench if needed.

There, my un-expert answer to my own query 30 minutes ago.

Id get rid of Bosingwa, unless you know something I dont? I dont think he will be 1st choice.

Only other thing worth pointing out is that you have Moses and Rodallega which is a slight Wigan overkill.

Balottelli obv! Jokin aside, doesn't Aguero still have blistered feet? He may well start but anyone whos tried playing with blistered feet will tell you how much of a nightmare it is, so might not perform well

Yeah, he still has blistered feet, that why I reckon Dzeko could be a good short term alternative given their opponents. That said, a week is a long tim so he could be well healed by then.
Even if he does heal though, there is still a good chance Dzeko will start imo. It wouldnt be hard for Mancini to accomodate the two of them. Aguero of Dzeko perhaps??

I was thinking of getting him in as Fulham have a solid defence plus the fact that Riise will get an assist/goal along the way.

He will likely take the corners from the right and far out free kicks which e's always fairly good at.

Saying that though at 6m maybe its a bit much.

I'd probably get out Warnock and get in maybe Jagielka as after game week 1 they have some good fixtures.

But that thinking is too rigid for the differential of casting a diverse net for cleansheets. The percentage odds would fluctuate. And at the far end of that you would seem crazy for even thinking that. For example, lets take poker for instance...

            A)
Man City v Swansea---2 city defenders

            vs

            B)
            Wigan v Nor.
            ---------1 Wigan & 1 Tot defender
            Tot v Eve.

If you choose B just out of diversity-sake or financial constraints, it's all good, but if you choose B because you wanna be diversified, that's just silly.

The other extreme is if you're just picking the defensive match-up with the best cleansheet potential, then you're bound to be burned in that extreme as well.

            Carrol, Bent, Holt

planning on wildcarding after week 3 when I have a good idea of players form and who's starting every game

anything you can point out that you'd change?

Wigan defenders are a bad idea, even with their fixtures they will still concede a few as the premier league new boys want to start off impressing against the weaker sides. Im not sold on sinclair much prefer seesognon for around the same price. you have three aston villa players so hope you have faith in them!

RVP injured and has some tough starting fixtures, perhaps rooney or drog until about GW4, not sold on fulhams defence this season under jol who is more attacking, and holt is a risk that might turn out worth taking have to wait and see! also yaya is in a depper role this season so might not get quite as many points as they look to get silva more invloved.

I'd drop A.Cole and maybe pick luiz for the cheaper chelsea option. Free 1m

I would also lose RVP as in my opinion their 1st 3 fixtures are pretty hard. free's 12m

      This leaves you with 13million

Id then get in bent who has a nice few fixtures at the start. 10million gone. Leaves u with 3mil

Id get out sinclair and maybe get in Downing with .5mill left

Am not well up on Chelsea football to answer that but id say that Ivanovic, Terry, Luiz, Cole will be their first choice defence

    Bent, Campbell, Welbeck (chirito)

Lose Alcaraz and swap with woodgate/brown. As Wigan will not keep clean sheets doesn't matter who they play.

I wouldn't have Welbeck as he won't start at the weekend. How will you manage to get Hernandez in when fit?

I think that Pavo of spurs is a very good option this season at 7mill..Better than welbeck at this stage anyway

getting closer to the final iteration, if anyone could offer any suggestions to improvement, they would be welcomed!

    Hangeland, kompany, Alcaraz (O'Shea, Simpson)
    Malouda, Sincalair, Silva, N'zog (dyer)
    RVP, Suarez, DJ

Wondering if I can fit Sess anywhere and the RVP/Suarez injury/fatigue clouds are concerning...

There's some uncertainty with suarez starting and silva is very expensive, and although he's a good player, alot of the time he makes the assist to the assist, which doesn't count for points in FF, so I would suggest either changing him to a nice cheap midfeilder like taraabt and then with the saved money improve the rest of your team like adding a chelsea defender to your back line but if you want just to replace silva then I would suggest malouda/nani/arshavin/downing/bale

    Rooney(V), Carroll(C), Holt

    (tiote, simpson, n taylor)

    .5 in bank

plan to do carroll to drogba GW2, but the .5 could get me a must have 10 mil mid for silva if i want to knee jerk.

what am i missing? and yes i want baines over chelsea defence.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Sess or Formica?

both seem to be playing in the hole in the pre games, both have mediocre starting fixtures, both seem to be impressing although I suspect Formica maybe has the edge.

    sess has
    liv, NEW, swa, CHE, STK

    formica has
WOL, avi, EVE, ful , ARS
