Wesley Sneijder admits to United talks, however unofficial. Marouanne Chamakh reckons Fabregas and Nasri are heading out the Emirates. Harry Redknapp turns to Real Madrid as he eyes up an old acquaintance. Wolves to assess Kevin Doyle’s fitness. Stoke sign yet another centre-half and Roy Hodgson’s thrilled to bits with Shane Long. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Wesley Sneijder admitted yesterday that he’s been in contact with Man United over a potential move to Old Trafford this summer. The Dutchman has been strongly linked with a move to the champions but with Inter looking for a deal rumoured to be in the region of £35m, there’s been little progress up to now. When asked if fancied a move to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, Sneijder replied:

“Yes but Manchester United haven’t made an official approach yet. There have been unofficial talks, there have been contacts but then there are always contacts. I have contacts with everybody.”

Spurs are rumoured to be eyeing up a move for Real Madrid’s Lassana Diarra. The former Arsenal player is unwanted at the Bernabeu and has already been signed by Harry Redknapp before- the Tottenham gaffer brought Diarra to Portsmouth during his tenure at Fratton Park. With Steven Pienaar ruled out for six weeks with a groin injury this week, Redknapp is on the lookout for midfield reinforcements.

Wolves are to reassess the fitness of Kevin Doyle after the striker was sent home from the Republic of Ireland squad. The forward played just less than an hour in Wolves’ recent win over Real Zaragoza but his international manager Giovanni Trapatonni has stated the player is “not 100% fit”. With the season about to kick off, the last thing Mick McCarthy needs is his star forward back on the sidelines once again.

Arsene Wenger has named both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in Arsenal’s Champions League squad for the play-off with Udinese. If either player takes part, they would be unable to participate in the competition for any other club in 2011/12. Gunners forward Marouanne Chamakh has had his say on the matter, and it seems even the feeling within the dressing room is one of resignation over the pair’s departure:

I think Cesc and Nasri will probably leave the club. I do not believe that the money available for these two players is really the crux of the problem. I just think the manager wants to find reliable replacements.

Stoke grabbed their second free transfer centre-half of the summer by acquiring Matthew Upson from West Ham yesterday. He joins Jonathan Woodgate at the Britannia, after the ex-Spurs’ player failed to have his contract renewed at White Hart Lane, and gives Tony Pulis an abundance of cover in the heart of defence. With the Potters playing in Europe this season, Pulis was keen to draft in extra defensive cover, he told the club’s official website:

We now have strength in depth in our defence with both Matthew and Jonathan on board and we’ve managed to achieve that without significant outlay on transfer fees, which is quite remarkable in today’s market of vastly-inflated prices.Their experience of performing at the highest level will be a valuable asset to us.

Robbie Keane is on the verge of a move away from Tottenham. The Irishman was farmed out on loan to West Ham in the second half of last season and is clearly not part of Harry Redknapp’s plans for the future. Keane said yesterday:

It’s probably likely that I will be going but I can’t really answer where to at the moment. There’s obviously a lot of speculation but there’s still a couple of weeks to go and we’ll see what happens. I haven’t turned down anything. I think there’s a few people talking to the clubs but that’s all I can really say at the moment.

Roy Hodgson was clearly delighted after snapping up Shane Long from Reading. The West Brom boss finally ended his summer pursuit of the forward by signing the Irishman on a three-year deal and in doing so, now feels his Baggies squad is close to completion. Hodgson said yesterday:

Shane is one of the most talented young strikers outside of the Premier League. He is a goalscorer and a hard-working player who has a very good attitude to the game. Many other clubs have shown an interest in Shane and it is great that we have managed to acquire his services.

How do people do manager of the month prizes if you're doing a mini league with prizes? Do you pay out on the 13th of each month, or at the end of each calendar month? If the second one, what do you do about the half month for August?

Calendar month - unless they've changed it with the new website, you can view your mini-leagues on a month-by-month basis. August (and May) just have fewer games in them.

It's good, maybe change Gabbidon to Simpson as you already have Kenny? Also no sure about tripling up on Villa, as you have Bent maybe downgrade N'Zogbia - who apparently isn't fully fit - to Taarabt?

Been talked about a lot on here summary being:

Silva - More attacking, further up the pitch, more likely to assist.

Yaya - More defensive but likely to grab bonus points under the new system. 1.5mil less.

      Conclusion - Flip a coin

For the first 60 mins of the Charity Shield, Yaya was in a central midfield 2 with de Jong, and didn't get forward much. Once Balotelli came off for Barry and they played 3 in the centre, Yaya was much more attacking.

Depends whether they play 3 in CM or 2.

I have started to see Drogba in a few teams. Do we think he could be a good differential?

Once again I think I may have it:

    Given / Ruddy
    Kompany / Dunne / Shawcross / Taylor / Brown
    Lampard / Downing / Taarabt / Moses / Sinclair
Van Persie / Dzeko / Holt

1.5mil in the bank which allows me to upgrade either Downing or Dzeko to a 10mil player depending on how things go, or potentially add to the defence or upgrade Ruddy to a 4.5.

Any other ideas as to where that money could go would be interesting, as would general thoughts as always.

Not sure about Dzeko, too many bad performances imo, even when he scores... Not a sure starter, as every player in City 🙂

Is an RVP or Rooney significantly better than a Bent or Carroll to warrant playing dumping A. Cole for a 5.5mil defender? (Already have two 4.0 defenders alongside Kompany & Hughes)

Over the first 10 or so weeks a combo of Rooney > RVP will score much higher than Bent/Carroll imo

While you could say the inclusion of Riise and Dunne is "brave" or "risky" I think they're very good shouts. I could be wrong, but I will have my eyes peeled in their direction.

Strikers are a bit cheap and cheerful though.

I'm just wondering if I've too much money put into my def, whih has made me a bit light weight up front, eventho These are the forwards I intend to use for the start of the season anyway.

    Given, Al Habsi

Naughton, Kelly, Lescott, Cole A, Rafael

Nani, N'Zogbia, Taarabt, Yaya Toure, Moses

    Carroll, Rodallega, Zamora

Would anyone like to hazard a guess as to what the Man City back 4 will be for the majority of the season? I have Lescott due to the odd goal threat but Kompany scored close points wise and is .5 cheaper of course. Both nailed on starters?

Richards started 17 games last season... Mind you, Lescott only started 20.

Both should be nailed on until Toure returns. Even after that, i can see Lescott keeping his place.

I think it will be Richards-Kompany-Lescott-Clichy

With Clichy's position being where the most rotation will happen imo

So we reckon Clichy wil start? Did he play much preseason or in the game on Sunday? he didn't start that did he?

Is there any OOP-players this season, as Coleman and Baird in earlier seasons?

Jon Walters - Stoke. Will play up front. Scored well last season and impressed.

Also Sessegnon is playing a bit further up the pitch than a mid usually does.

Same with Pratley at Bolton and Tchoi at WBA. If they play.

I'm going for Drogba against the physical strength of Stoke. Might be subbed after 60 mins though.
